When it comes to a great lawn, there's a few key steps to focus on to fix your yard and achieve the lawn you've always wanted.
The key steps I'm working on today are core aeration and dethatching. These steps are not only great for your lawn in general, but they are especially key before Overseeding.

Finally did my back yard this last weekend. Rented the peat moss spreader and the lawn roller. My husband didn't believe me when I told him how heavy the lawn roller was filled with water. OMG! now stands for OH MY GLUTES! lol My back yard is flat. I may or may not need the lawn roller but wanted to give it a whirl. What a workout! But the peat moss spreader WAS AMAZING! We always A/O with Turf Type Tall Fescue at TG but I remember we had those walk behinds and the old fashioned ride on them things would be bouncing literally every where then they bought this brand new Z Aerate 40" ride on with the medieval spikes in front and u could control the depths of the plugs and everything it was literally beautiful and no one wanted to ride it guess they were scared so I got stuck doing it, but I liked it honestly... I could get 3-6 maybe 7" cores not that u would want 7 but a 5" plug is good and since it had hooper on top i would just do a perimeter pass then while doing second pass id seed what I just pulled to my left. or right sometimes but yeah that Machine was incredible honestly absolutely loved it... But you could really tear up a lawn if u even jerk left or right with the spikes in ground ur pooped

Next 10 days will be in the 60s. Would've been nice to be able to start this project in the beginning of August. Making a mental note. LOL Spring I will be ordering soil so I can get the lawn level. Yes, I ordered the Levellawn tool from ya. Gotta help the locals out :) I'm sure ill be snagging up a Peat moss spreader as well. I won't be doing that by hand again. Well, my lawn looks like crap because I never take care of it but I do have an old kitchen apple corer and I go out and make holes with it in the bare spots. Do a few holes at a time all year. The plugs are two to three inches, if I can get it in the soil that far. Needs a good rain. The first year after I did this the lawn looked great. Then voles moved in, maybe other stuff , and it never looked that good again.

Ryan, do you think one of those lawn sweepers would work great picking the plugs up? Also I bet the reason you didn't get deep plugs is because the mud was building up on the tires therefore making it higher off the ground. Is that your neighbor that you're renovationing the lawn across the street?

The first pass was same depth as I was getting after the wheels got some mud on them but it did the job for now.

I am going to level out some uneven spots in my backyard after aeration but before putting seed down. Is it best then to remove the plugs from these areas? And if so, what’s the easiest way to remove them: bagging them with a mower or raking them up?

Where did you find a walk-behind reciprocating aerator? I’ve been looking everywhere near me and the only way to get reciprocating is to get the stand-on model from Sunbelt which is 3-4x more expensive than drum walk-behinds

Ryan...looks to me like a sand delivery. I am having lots of trouble finding suitable sand to level. Maybe you can discuss in the video where/what to get. Having some trouble finding some sand. I have watched your previous video on the topic too.

Hi Ryan... Love the videos and the way you share the knowledge. I'm struggling with an issue. I did a full overseeding project last weekend with aerate, cut, soil with triple mix, overseed with the types of perennial rye and then starter fertilizer and humic acid treatment. That whole process went well but here's the issue. This week was cooler than expected here in Toronto. No rain. I watered at least twice a day and tried to keep the seeds moist. Unfortunately I haven't had really any growth yet and first is day seven. I'm keeping up the watering but the lawn seems to have slowed down a lot and I am starting to see it browning. I'm worried I'm getting fungus from the over watering but I can't stop because of the seeding. What do I do?

Pete from GCI said in one of his videos to use top soil not sand to level if you have TTTF as sand holds in heat and does not retain water?

Ryan if you had to choose from any of the main lawn care companies, (Tru Green, Spring Green, Weedman, Etc) which would you choose from and why? Maybe make a video out of it?

I LOVE your videos! So down to earth and so informative. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Does your wife go crazy over you spending so much time on the yard?? Also, I live in Lexington, KY, and this summer was HOT and DRY. I have bluegrass (we just moved into this house in August) and a LOT of crabgrass. The county extension agent says to forget about the crabgrass this year and hit it w/ a pre-emergent in the spring along w/ some fertilizer. Do you agree or should I try to kill the crabgrass this fall? I'd say the yard is 30-40% crabgrass. Fortunately, we have a small lawn. About 2500sf and most of that is in the front. Thanks for your advice.

I would agree with them. At this point it's late in the season and crabgrass is harder to control anyway, so let it die and then prevent it next year.

I started to see germination in really bare spots about 3 days ago after overseeding on August 30th. With all the watering my existing grass has really started to grow and worried it may shade out new seed germination. Debating if I should take my manual reel mower to at least trim down what's there.

Ryan the past 2 years I've dethatched, aerated, laid compost and overseeded and it's worked out well. The lawn is in pretty good shape right now so I would like to try to just overseed after dethatching and aerating. In general would you recommend removing the cores before overseeding?

No unless you have a low cut lawn. Otherwise you can leave them
