I had low back problems for more than 5 five years. And one thing I can say is no matter what the problem is or who you are the key is to never give up. I had numbness is my legs I couldn’t do anything without pain I had people want to fuse discs and one said I had a cracked vertebrae. Long story short I’m 33 now and I deadlift and squat nearly double my body weight and I have zero back pain. So don’t give up try all different stuff I literally tried a thousand different exercises, stretches and all the back experts I could find. Eventually I hit the couple I needed with no surgery.

Can you share the exercises you did? I have numbness in my left leg and would love to know what you did to eliminate it. I am more than twice your age and would like to get back to lifting weights, although not quite as much as you're doing, but I'm worried about putting pressure on my nerves and exacerbating the problem.

@@refatrabadi6656 depends of the situation. Cobra can be good for people who have to bend often and/or lift things. Figure 4 stretch is more to stretch the bum (gluteus). I don’t know about knee to opposite shoulder, I never recommand it. I know that my hip would hate it.

I'm not quite sure that I understand why those two low back flexion movements aren't recommended. For me, my lower back and sacrum areas are so tight, that when I lay supine those muscles will start spasming. I find that flexion of the low back & sacral area while standing, is relieving of that tightness. Most people think that lying on your back, face up (supine) and feet straight out is a relaxed position. For me, lying supine IS NOT relaxing for me due to low back & sacral tightness Bending my knees will relieve the low back tightness when I'm supine. If Bob & Brad say that it isn't a good idea for forward flexion of the spine, then what choice do I have? Any responses are welcomed!

I think Brad was saying that there are exceptions and that some people are helped by it. The author of the book disagrees, so they say that most people shouldn't do it. But Brad says that it helps him personally, so he does it. I was taught in personal training not to do or teach these exercises. But I occasionally do them, too, and it helps me, too. Edit: I also use a heating pad in that area. That helps me a lot in relieving tension there, too.
@curious1366
@curious1366 3 жыл бұрын
@@anyascelticcreations Thank you for responding. I strongly suspect that if I'm super tight in the sacral area, then I'm probably also pretty weak anteriorly (ie lower abs). But most ab work makes me super spasmy in the sacral area. So I'd like to stretch the sacral area enough to counteract all the lower ab work. But Bob and Brad didn't make it clear as to what the negative consequences are-- they just said to not do it.
@anyascelticcreations
@anyascelticcreations 3 жыл бұрын
@@curious1366 When I was training to become a personal trainer they taught us that it compresses the lumbar spine. Have you tried stretching your psoaz? It causes the same anterior tilt that the muscles in the low back and sacral area do. Very often stretching psoaz relieves pain in the low back. There are lots of psoaz videos on KZbin if you want to try. I think that you're right that strengthening your abs is a good idea too. But not in a way that stresses your low back. Maybe look online for some very gentle ab exercises that you haven't tried. Maybe something different would help. 🤗

I was recently referred by my nurse practitioner to PT for sciatica. The first thing the PT asked me to do was to bend over and touch my toes. I’m still pretty flexible so it wasn’t hard or painful but why would she have me do that? I actually stopped going to that PT clinic. Whatever “massage” or muscle manipulation they were doing prior to my exercises was incredibly painful (in a bad way). I listened to my body and left that place! Going to an orthopedist to get a proper diagnosis of the root cause for this sciatica pain before attempting PT again.

Been doing (for lack of better pronoun ) the one where you move your pelvis from left to right with your feet on the ground and your back stuck to the floor and that cobra part where you stretch your spine every morning and evening. Must been said; my back feels alot better as i hurt my back when i was 16 (now 34). Thank thee kindly good sirs.

Cat/cow is even done in kundalini yoga while in a seated position, coordinated with the breath. Perhaps yogis were the original PTs. There are innumerable variations of poses to suit the condition of the practitioner. Whilst I was in the hospital, my PT said she also taught yoga on the side-Safest class around, for sure

I think the big issue is rounding the back when bringing the head up. As long as you are flat and bring up the knees, it's ok.

I have osteoporosis and since watching your video about that, I've avoided any movement where my spine gets rounded. Am I being too cautious by doing that? I do a supine plank and the clam for back pain.

Stuart McGill advises against the plank because of hip flexor activation which, because of the psoas’ attatchment to the lumbar spine, causes unwanted compression of the lumbar discs.He does, however, recommend side planks in his ‘big three’ programme.

Haha, love your KZbins. I practice yoga but can do forward folds among other things any longer due to guess what- SI joint troubles and low back issues. But I also have scolosis that I had no clue about. Anyway you are always informative and amusing kind of like Car Talk was in the day.

If you train doing yoga often then you should be fine. If you have osteoporosis then be more careful.

I think that was their point that if you already have lower back problems to avoid that type of stretch but if you don’t then it’s fine.

Hinge in your hip, not in lower back. It stretches your hamstring and not spine.
@gaminallthytime

Do movements where you dont round your lower spine, the moment that happens you should stop. You should figure out why your spine is rounding instead of your hips hinging.

Heh, I know it's kind of a running-joke, but it's either cow-camel, or cow-cat. The "cow" part emulates the stereotypical perceived swayback of a cow (where the shoulders and hips are high, but the back dips low). Then arching the back upward is either a "camel" due to their humps, or the stereotypical portrayal of an angry or defensive "cat", the way they arch their backs up while puffing their tails and hissing. (A pose especially popular around Halloween, where black cats are drawn or crafted in that pose to add intimidation or fear factor.) But you guys can call 'em whatever you want. ;)

Hey i was wondering about the McKenzie method. A common lower back workout people do are supermans, but some people say the supermans puts too much pressure on the spine.The McKenzie method looks very similar in motion to the supermans. Does the McKenzie method also then not put a lot of pressure on the spine?
