Glashütte Original is on a different level compared to Nomos. Glashütte Original is on a level of Blancpain, JLC and the likes, I would say, while Nomos is more in the range of Longines/Entry-Level Omega. Still, considering the price, great package and I don't know any other European brand offering this value for money. P.S. The normal Nomos Alpha movement uss an escapement produced by the Swatch Group. The Swing System is the escapement developed and produced by Nomos. They have even blued the balance spring on their Swing System 😅. P.P.S. The Glashütte Original movement is based on the old GUB Spezimatic movement.

Was interested to see Philippe Dufour being interviewed at W&W, and recommending Nomos as a a great entry brand, and one that he has much respect for. Can't get much more of a recommendation than that for a newbie looking to enter the watch game for a reasonable price.

Glashütte Original uses Nivarox (steel alloy) hairsprings. That includes the Pano-collection. So the double swanneck still have its full function.
@watchartsci Жыл бұрын
Gustaf-(Nivarox is a Swatch spring...) The Pano collection is slowly being taken over by silicon: --From Hodinkee review of the new PanoMaticCalendar ... "the hairspring inside is crafted from high-tech silicon, " GO's description of the movement in the new SeaQ: -Glashütte three-quarter plate with stripe finish -Regulator-free fine adjustment (dog whistle for 'silicon') -Skeletonized rotor with double-G symbol and 21-carat gold oscillation weight -Polished steel parts -Bevelled/polished edges -Screws polished/blued -Silicon balance spring (and there it is...) --Not that I'm crazy about Nivarox, but at least it's using a transitional metal. Take care, Bill

"The sharp eyed amongst you, dear readers, will be wondering what the swan neck regulator is for. Being free-sprung, a regulator index is unnecessary, so it’s used for isochronism adjustment - shifting the position of the hairspring so it breathes concentrically even as the watch winds down. Even then the swan neck is not crucial, but it is a traditional feature of GO movements, and one that is attractively finished with flat polishing. The movement could do without it, but then it would look slightly bare given the recognisable style of GO calibres."
@ollik8192 Жыл бұрын
I asked about the double swan-neck regulator in the PanoMaticCalendar. The answer was cryptic. The other bit may be a bit of a doodad. "The regulator free fine adjustment includes two swan-nec springs: the one oh the left features an adjustment screw providing the watchmaker with the means to adjust the anchor symmetry. The right swan neck serves as a form of indicator." In the single swan-neck regulator systems that have silicon hairsprings, the swan-neck regulates beat error and the rate is free-sprung meaning that it can be adjusted by the screws.

Not sure they are comparable. I like both but holding them side by side GO is in another league, not only because of the movement finishing but case and dial are also wayy beyond Nomos.

The 35 mm Nomos Orion was what fully led me down the precipitous fall into horology--they have very long lugs, which immediately increases their overall diameter, so I always warn those who complain that they're "too small" about that feature.

Thanks so much Bill for another informative video. I love both brands myself and i'm also always looking for a unique original movement in timepieces but they do seem to be pricy. Anyway the one I have in mind and for a very good entry level price point into the whole Glashutte thing is the Nomos Tetra, gosh I love that watch.

Nomos makes some great watches, and I love my Tangente. I do think that GO as a brand is above Nomos in terms of finishing and range of complications. I'm seriously considering their perpetual calendar which offers outstanding value. The movement beats at 4Hz and has 100 hours of power reserve too.

Glashütte Original has a number of highly finished movements and watches, but I don’t feel comfortable with the larger case sizes. Except for the SeaQ 40mm, I ‘d love to own that watch. Great video!

Nomos is one of my favorite brands regardless of where they sit on the Horology spectrum (recognizing they seem to be moving away from their small model lines of high Horology watches as a White Gold Lux has remained elusive). I have a collection of Nomos and expect to continue to collect them in the future. They are a great value and bang for the buck and I love their clean Bauhaus design ethos. Whether it is a Club Sport 42, Tangente Neomatik 39, Tetra 39 (square), Zürich World Time, Tangomat GMT, or even an Autobahn 41, these watches punch well above there weight as Nomos has invested heavily in their own movements and even their own Swing System escapements. GO, just never grabbed my attention however. Maybe I view them as an entry level ALS which is a void I do not feel I need to fill.

Nice session, Bill. Both companies are pitching for different parts of the market, so it is nice to see them compared in this way. I enjoy discrete watches (that hide under the cuff) and Nomos, with its simple aesthetics and smaller sizes does this well. Silly as it may seem, my Tetra Matcha still makes me smile everytime I see it's wee face.

I also should add, while there is not a lot of info on the what the Nomos “Swing System” is comprised of, there is information reflecting the partnership with Technical University of Dresden to design their in house movements at a significant cost. I also have been advised that due to capacity constraints, their High Horology pieces are not in production.

Good video Bill. Nice comparison, I learned a lot. I’m all for a dial that’s not too clutter, but I can’t get use to Nomos’ Bauhaus design, it’s almost like a religion. I like the GO Pano Reserve, but the lack of information about the hairspring has always kept me away. Best regards, Brian

You can’t judge how small/large it would sit on your hand by just knowing the width of the watch. Lug to lug is what matters most of the time. Example of which is AP Royal Oak.

Somehow Nomos dials felt like an acquired taste to me - no doubt that what they’ve done with their movements is amazing! I would pick the Orion, Tangente Update or the Club Sport. GO’s Senator line drew me in from the very start - classical dials, timeless designs but some serious movements in there. 😀
