I can visit my doctor whenever I want...(Belgium). My knee hurts during lunch on Monday, that evening I visited my doctor. Tuesday I got pictures taken a few streets away. Wednesday we checked out the pictures with my doctor. Thursday I got my treatment with my doctor again. And to cover my bases. Yes it was cheap, yes it's paid with taxes(because apparently people in the US don't consider streets and libraries free? I don't know, Americans are sometimes weird when it comes to taxes)

To answer your question near the beginning, in the American system people avoid going to a gp due to costs until they are too sick to function at which point they go to hospital. Also many gp’s have their offices in hospitals

Well Jon it tends yo vary. People who have a regular doctor tend to visit them first if they feel ill or are in pain, but some people can't afford a regular doctor or want to cut to the chase and go straight to the hospital, where they do do diagnosis. There are also a lot of hospitals that include GPs who are people's regular doctor, just with access to hospital facilities if needed.

In Brazil we only have GPs in Hospitals, the specialists either have offices in a specialized private hospital or a private office in a building or a Clinic filled with several floors of different doctors offices.

A lot of hospitals, at least in the part of the US I'm from, have GP offices *in* the hospital. Hospitals come in a large complex of buildings, where only a couple of the buildings are the hospital proper, while the rest are GPs and specialists.

It's much more efficient to have your gp in the hospital as patients can then visit a specialist or lab if they need more advanced diagnostics in the same visit or can be immediately transferred into the er or surgery.

Jon I'm not a health worker or anything so I could be wrong but Im pretty sure most UK hospitals do in fact have GPs as well and it simply depends on where you live as to whether your closest GP surgery is in said hospital or in a smaller medical practice, I suspect theres plenty of folks who live much closer to a hospital than another clinick who have to go to said hospital to see their GP (in both this country and overseas, similarly in the states theres plenty of doctors surgery's outside of hospitals too) :)

If we have a problem and don't have time to make an appointment then we go to a walk-in/ clinic. If it's really bad than we go strait to a hospital but most hospitals have clinics in them that diagnose and treat

if this game is like theme hospital then you want 2-3 gp offices to every 1 of every other type of room because every single patient that comes in must go to a gp first but only 20% or so of patient will go to pharmacy or other treatment rooms so multiple gps makes your hospital as efficient as possible

Also as far as I know you can only get fires in the game from machinery that breaks down so you dont need an extinguisher in a GPs office as its impossible for the GPs desk to burst into flames ;)

GP's are often in hospitals in America. Sometimes they are separate though. At this point though, with the corporatization of our health system, the overwhelming majority of GP's are employees of hospitals and not independent.

Sadly Jon, in the US private practice physician's (GP's) are being used less & less. Emergency Departments are being used now as primary care which is wrong. Its causing wait times in ED's to skyrocket, which means hospitals are spending less time with patients who actually need to be there. At the same time, more & more of the general population are on Medicaid/medical assistance so hospitals aren't getting paid, thus entire units being closed down. I worked in a Pediatric Emergency Department for 8 years until they completely & unsafely closed down our unit this year. Now I'm in Labor & Delivery. :/

Yeah! Yeah... Americans will show up at a hospital with no idea what is wrong. In fact, the GP will send someone to the hospital with the suspicion of something. Most GP offices don't even have the resources required to properly diagnose anything beyond the most common ailments. If little Billy doesn't come in with it on a day-to-day basis, they send you in the hospital where they can actually figure it out. They may give you a short list, but sometimes they will send you for a test without even telling you what they are suspicious of.

You know, realistically this number of patients in such a short period of time is epidemic levels of illness. I've been in several hospitals, and they almost always feel eerily empty. So yeah, as far as I know, hospitals are never this crowded unless there's something serious going on.

@Blockhead Perhaps. To be fair, I only lived in a big city for the first eight years in my life. I believe there were actually two hospitals, and amusingly, they were pretty much across the street from each other. True, a lot of times clinics and emergency rooms can be crowded, but the hospital itself rarely ever is. This is more pronounced in rural regions, partially because there are less people, and partially because we generally only go to the hospital if it's something very serious. Most other things we self medicate/treat.
