Wow, so grateful for this video! For several years, I have been complaining to my GP about extremely painful headaches that wake me from my sleep and continue all day. Not migraines but headaches. My Dr said it was due to having high BP, but I know that I had a lot of neck discomfort at night from sleeping with a lumpy, old pillow. I wish more Drs would listen to their patients.

Lifetime migraine sufferer here! Migraine attacks can trigger neck issues (muscle tightness caused by inflammed nerve) and neck issues can trigger migraine attacks (cervicalgenic headaches). It's definitely a negative feedback loop, but addressing the neck and continuing to do appropriate stretching can alleviate symptoms of migraine and decrease the frequency (i.e. lowering the migraine threshold). 🤗

Don’t count out the jaw as well. I’ve been to the physical therapist for years for neck pain before I discovered the main problems actually came from my jaw. Your jaws are connected to tons of muscles in the neck and also to the large muscles on the sides of your head so tension and inflammation can cause pain in the neck and head. I have a few massage routines I can do myself, a splint for at night and I’m actively training to relax my jaws. Don’t count it out because a lot of physical therapists never even looked at my jaw and after this discovery and treatment my neck pain decreased significantly.

I'm in my mid 60s and had suffered from the exact same symptoms that you are describing, with the addition of nerve pain from C6 that tracked from my neck into my shoulder and down into my right bicep with associated numbness down to my thumb and first finger. It became so bad that I had to take early retirement just before turning 60 years old. In the summer of 2021 I was recommended to have anterior cervical decompression and fusion surgery and had the surgery over Christmas 2021. The operation was a success and I had four discs removed, the vertebrae reshaped, pinned and screwed and the fusion material put in place. Although I was warned before the op that it was an invasive and potentially painful op I wasn't fully prepared for the level of pain post-op. To perform the op the surgeon needed to work through the front of my neck and my throat had to be pulled and held to one side for the duration of the op. I am now in the 9th week of my recovery. I am still having periods when I find it difficult to swallow and burp. My neck wound was expertly attended to and the 3" scar is barely visible. My head movements are surprisingly good and I have full movement up to 90° to both left and right. Head movement forward and back are a little more limited but I'm not able to tilt my head towards either shoulder more that about 1". My nerve pain in the right-hand side of my neck and shoulder was severe for the first few weeks and strong drugs such as Pregabalin and Tramadol struggled to mask the pain. I had to use Tramadol for 30 days, I couldn't tolerate Pregabalin, and the 30 days of Tramadol was enough to give me withdrawal symptoms when I stopped taking it. I still have neck pain and muscle cramping in the area between neck and shoulder. I am still having daily headaches, sometimes severe but then again my neck muscles are still painful so I assume that's the cause. I wouldn't advise you not to have decompression surgery if recommended but I'm just trying to make you aware of the potential pain and general severe discomfort that you may not necessarily be adequately warned about.

I actually have headache that originates from the back of my neck, very similar to what you describe. It became more frequent last month, i had it every Wednesday or Thursday every week, I took paracetamol to cure it normally, it worked fine. I really want to know what was wrong, but I was quite sure the doctors would get me through all kinds of scanning and came up to me that I needed a brain surgery, no way! One day in my office I felt too stiff for prolonged sitting, i stood up to turn around my head to relax I noticed that the aircon was blowing into my face and when i sat down it was blowing directly at the back of my head and shoulders. I didn't feel right so I turned away the grille so the cold air blew away from me. From then on I felt quite comfortable in my chair, i had always felt wronged sitting there for a long time, thinking that maybe the Feng Shui was not good. But after i adjusted the air grille, my headache went away, too. I have been free from headache for three weeks now entering fourth. Probably the cold air makes my backneck muscle contract all the time so much that it squeezes my nerves, I don't know but I'm good now, my goodness glad to be good.

You guys mentioned even blurry vision can result from pain at the top of the neck. So can VERTIGO. Fortunately, I am heading back to the physiatrist ( not psych-iatrist) who helped me with lower back pain. He works closely with a neurologist and physical therapist couple in the same building. He wanted a neck MRI 6 months ago and I declined. I won't decline any advice this time. Neck pain and vertigo are no joke. You guys,Bob,Brad, and Mike are life savers, thank you. I callwd my condition "tech neck" because I believe it related to the way I hunch while looking down at phone or laptop. The receptionist laughed and said she knew exactly what I meant by tech neck.

Bob & Brad: The bra type you are mentioning is called a, 'racerback bra'. They're popular in the fitness world. I have all the issues you mentioned in this video, and for me I find wearing racerback bras make my neck pain and headaches worse, and I am NOT, "endowed".😄 I think it's more an issue of where the straps hit on the top of my shoulders that's aggravating the muscles. I'm appreciative of this video. For many years I didn't have what was going on pieced together. As a tween in the 1980's, I was seated in the front passenger seat with my family (no seatbelt, as my family did then🫤) and we were rear-ended (hard) by an altered driver. Being the era it was, we were sent home from the ER and told to take Tylenol. This event was the beginning of my neck & back pain that often causes headaches/migraines that feel like I was struck by a bat in the neck & head. When I finally saw a chiropractor, she would often comment on my limited range of neck motion, esp left to right. She wanted me to get an MRI, and I wanted one too, but decided against it due to cost (ah, the US healthcare system)... Thank you for your videos and the 'Neck Pain' series!❤️

@@chrisfornaris1283 Thank you for Responding, means more than you know. The answer to your question is 24 hours a day 7 days a week yes. Anything that swells my neck muscles in the slightest results in moderate to severe migraines. The base of my skull is the area that causes the extreme migraine to trigger. Even when there is no swelling there is still pressure So I hold the onset of a migraine that I can not shake. With your stethoscope you hear constant crunching like there are hundreds of pebbles in there. The crunching isn't painfully at all. I've got full range of motion in all directions and can swivel in all directions when there's no swelling. When there is swelling range of motion goes out the door and the nerves shoot pain downwards in A few different directions and burning sensations in some of these areas. For the longest time I could swing my neck left to right popping it and releasing pressure and getting a lil relief but the right side will no longer allow me to pop. That's not all though, chewing and the acting like I'm chewing affects the same area at the base of my skull.

I experienced this 20 years ago and I was diagnosed with "Chronic Tension Headache" after suffering for a little over 3 weeks with a constant (24hr/day) headache. I had mild nausea, and dizziness on occasion during the episode. OTC medicines didn't do much, but coincidentally, after walking out of the Doctor's office with a prescription for Excedrin Tension headache, all my pain just vanished. Haven't had it since, until about 3 weeks ago, and now I'm dealing with almost the same thing. I usually wake up with pain in my shoulders and neck, and then it slowly becomes pain at the sides of my head, moving toward my temples and sometimes travelling to the crown of my head. I also have been experiencing some pain just above my jaw bone. I'm chalking it up as excessive stress and anxiety as I've had a lot of things happen in the past month leading up to it. Thankfully it has only woken me up once but I can usually sleep just fine. I do have anxiety and restlessness, paired with really bad thoughts, which seems to be more debilitating than the actual head pain/headache itself, at times. I've been trying all of these stretches online and they have been surprisingly helpful. Try the chin-tuck method. I can feel the tightness at the back of my head when I do the first few stretches and then it goes away after a bit. I will continue to do these stretches frequently over the next few days and hopefully the headache will go away! Good luck to you in recovering and if you're like me, stress plays an oftentimes big factor!

@@SupremeODMG MRIs of my brain and cervical spine came back normal, which is awesome! Now, I scheduled an appointment with a dentist because I actually think it's coming from my TMJ. It used to hurt bad when I open my mouth wide for food or yawn, even to the point where it felt like my jaw dislocated every time. I also was clenching my teeth years ago, which caused lots of jaw pain and I believe, some headache... Now it might be a combination of stress, anxiety, sub-conscience jaw clenching (at night and during the day), as well as poor posture, overdoing it at the gym and worn out prescription glasses that led to this headache which is now 9 weeks long. That said, tension has subsided significantly in the past 2-3 weeks with frequent attention to massaging my neck and shoulders, unclenching my jaw, meditation and general relaxing that some days, I barely feel any pain. Ive also started juicing, taking supplements aimed at stress like magnesium oxide, running versus weight lifting and my stress and anxiety have dropped dramatically! Whatever the case, best of luck to anyone exeriencing chronic tension as it's scary to not know what it is yet have so many symptoms across your body.

Wow! I was struggling with some intense headaches the last 3 - 4 weeks. I had lab work and even a CAT scan, because I rarely get headaches. These were 3 or more horrible headaches that would last about 45 min each. I have the symptoms that you are talking about on the right side. I definitely will look at your videos, since I could not get the help I needed from the primary physician.

This is the answer I wanted to get for months. I get pain right above the right ear. I thougt it was earache or some kind of tumor. I visited ENT doctor. He checked and right ear is perfect. He also checked my throat by inserting a metal spatula like tool. That's it. I got corona becoz of that insertion. May be it was also inserted in the throat of previous patient. It took 2 months and lot of struggle to recover. Finally I found myself that the hard pillow is pressing my neck during sleep. I get the pain when I wake up and the pain goes off during day time.

Ty guys. Have had a headache for three days now. It’s like a rams horn on the right side with some visual effects. I have MS so was getting nervous about a possible attack but I do believe this is being caused by my neck after doing a few of the motions you two suggested. 😮‍💨 was on vacation for past two weeks and did carry a purse everyday on my right shoulder. If it doesn’t lessen in a few days after careful regular stretching I will see my neurologist to be sure but feel a lot calmer. So Again, ty❤

I have a long history of bad left-side headaches. As far as I remember, they started about age 10. I got them when watching films at school, home or television. I’m 64 now. I’ve gotten them every night for years, but they haven’t been that much of a problem, because I could just go to bed and they’d eventually subside, with or without a pain reliever. In the past few weeks, they’ve been coming on in the day time. I do landscaping, and I thought my constant use of a large weed trimmer, coupled with a recent heat wave and virus, was aggravating an already existing condition, but now I’m just not sure. I’m taking about a week off, hoping I get over this virus, and giving my neck and shoulder muscles a good rest. I do feel an occasional twinge and strain in my left neck muscle. Throughout the day, they can come and go. Sometimes they get pretty brutal. Lying down and napping helps a lot, sometimes making them go away completely, though I do feel just a hint of them. As I type this, it’s flaring up, which typically happens with being on the computer, and often other focused work, like driving. I hope I can learn something from these videos, but even watching them at the library is a challenge, because it aggravates my condition, which is almost unbearable.

I needed this video. I have a lot of neckpain. Shoulder pain and now TMD. It's all connected and I'm suffering everyday. It's the neck one day, my jaw the other day. I've had dry needling done yesterday and my neck felt great the whole time yesterday. Today everything is stuck again, even more tight. And a migraine like headache. I didn't drink a lot yesterday. But even my throat muscles are tight. The headaches are the worst. Tried staying away from the painkillers but def need one today. Also funny you mentioned the bra. I'm big breasted (runs in the family I guess) and the bras make my shoulder pain worse. Even upperback. I bought a bra that crosses around the back. A sports bra. See if that helps. Today even the chintucks hurt. Ugh. 😩 I'm going to watch all of your neck and shoulder videos. See if I can do something about it. With good posture offcourse.

I’ve had bad pain in April 2020 similar to your situation. Just want you to know there is always something you can do. There’s hope. I still have pain but it’s random or after long work at a desk. Some solutions I found were changing my sleep arrangements (slept without a pillow on my back), daily vitamin d and zinc. These helped me, but keep trying different things. Know you’re body is all connected and things you do with your hands also can affect your neck. Take breaks if you use a phone a lot and keep proper posture as much as possible. You can do it! I also avoided pain killers and only took Tylenol extra strength when it was bad.

@@astrxlogical6166 You're welcome. Also forgot to mention that at my desk, when I change the position of my keyboard and mouse (45 degree angle slope on a board) it has helped alleviate the same pain shooting to my head. This has to be the main cause of the stress along with no breaks. Trying to have a 2-3 minute break from the desk every hour. It's so annoying, but I am trying to build muscles in my back so this never comes back again. I hope you can get through this!

Howdy gents! Interesting that you mention migraines. One of the symptoms that tells me that I am about to get a migraine, is that my neck starts to tighten something wicked. It would be easy for me to say it was the neck causing all the headaches, but I know my migraine trigger is barometric pressure change. I just wonder how my shoulder and neck can tell that change, because it always is a signal a migraine is coming within five hours. I discovered that I would get a toothache on one side because the neck would pull hard on my jaw. I have been counteracting this by slathering my neck in IcyHot to keep the neck and shoulder muscles relaxed, but some of your stretches have been immensely helpful.

I've been doing repetitive work for years. My shoulders have been tense for years. Especially my left shoulder. I literally have a knot and it hurts. Doctor gave me muscle relaxers and that didn't even help. Did some therapy and it helped. I got this mainly on my left shoulder because I turn my neck left constantly. This is just the setup of my station. I can't move the heavy equipment due to how the tables are setup. I get a shooting pain starting at my shoulder, tingling in my neck and travels to my head and causes me to have a bad head rush. It hurts too. I wish I could get 2 injections 💉 in my shoulders to make them relax for good.

Thank you both for mentioning the 2 watermelons in the room!!!! I have struggled with this since I ‘developed’. A bra that will provide adequate support without pulling on your shoulders and neck. I have degenerative bone loss in my neck due to several car accidents and struggle with ocular migraines, and base of the neck headaches (sleeping always seems to trigger this so I think I hyper extend my neck when I sleep). I spend so much $$ on trying to finally find a bra that does not do this and despite the advertisements, there are not a lot of companies that will make a razor back bra (which would be so much more comfortable) for a larger cup size. They stop at DD. When my neck/shoulder is flared up to the point of a weekly ocular migraine, it is so bad that I wait as long as possible to put on a bra. Not cute!!
