Dunkirk was a rather artistic movie, centered on the general quiet sense of relief of having not won but also not really lost. Sorties were at least squadron size, means 10 plus, clouds, and not all the time horizontally at around 500 feet. But varying from 3000 feet to 100 feet. Absolute chaos. Not about strategies, but coping by adjusting to reality.

My grandfather was in the U.S. Air Corp , we didn't have an air force as it's known today. He did his fighting in Africa. At the end of war he was ordered to Germany and broken hearted to see the state of the German people. He , and other members of his squadron, has children begging for food . They would give out their own personal rations, which was discouraged by army. War is very different from the air , once they were on ground amongst everyone is when the cost hit hard. God bless to my grandfather, my father who was in Vietnam, my brother in Afghanistan, and everyone who has endured horrors of war that civilians couldn't truly understand.

My dad flew with a Blenheim squadron. He was posted to the Far East, but knew about the slaughter of the RAF bomber (Blenheim) squadrons in the retreat to Dunkirk because, for some reason, the private letters to them were not censored. The huge death rate of these squadrons was kept out of the newspapers by Churchill fearing it would seriously affect morale. Even the fighter pilots said the Blenheim crews were the bravest they'd seen because they knew they were out gunned, out manouvred. Years later my dad met a Dunkirk army veteran who had nothing good to say about the RAF. My father quietly explained. At my dad's funeral this old gent stood in front of a photo of dad, saluted and said he was one of the best men he'd ever met. When I saw the Blenheim fly low over the boat in the film and the words "one of ours" I cried.

The footage is from the film Dunkirk. Two of the three Spitfires had been recently restored to fly both had all work paid for by a very rich American gentleman. Who made a couple of interesting stipulations. One aircraft was for his personal collection. The other was to be sold at open auction with almost all proceeds after sales fees donated to RAF and veterans charities. The one sold at Christie’s of London broke records for highest price of a Spitfire at auction. Both aircraft to be flown at flying displays for a full season by some of the best display pilots available. During that season the owners of the aircraft were approached about the possibility of using them as a part of the Dunkirk film. It was agreed with strict limitations. Only fully type certified pilots. No drilling holes in the aircraft or damage from equipment. So the camera aircraft was a Yak trainer with false exhaust manifolds and a close to authentic paint scheme. Both Spitfires shipped to the States after filming was completed. One final historical point one of the two restored Spitfires was actually shot down over the beaches of Dunkirk during the fighting as the troops were trapped on the Dunkirk beaches. The pilot crash landed. Survived and was a POW. Ironical that this aircraft had both its final combat flight and its final fight in European airspace over the beaches of Dunkirk. Almost eighty years apart.
