Dim Sum means touch of heart in translation. Basically it means you eat a variety of little or very small portion of delicious set of dishes instead of a course of meal as you would in normal restaurants. That's also what the emperor eats during Qing dynasty and you would find some of those history in Beijing. @15:40 She was wrong about such term being "popularized by Chinatowns in the West" (unless she considers Hong Kong as part of the West which it isn't/wasn't lol...) as it is just the way it was meant that got twisted/misunderstood overseas. So in Cantonese, they will say going to "Yum Cha" (which means to drink hot tea) instead of going to "Dim Sum." But those small dishes you order are all Dim Sum dishes that most people going to "Yum Cha" would do/eat/order. And the reason you "Yum Cha" is actually for health benefit that is to get rid of the oily elements from the Dim Sum dishes apart from the tea drinking cultural aspects. I hope that make sense to you guys.
@jimmyli54755 ай бұрын
Yes, there are several interpretations or understandings as to the origin of tea drinking,, snacks and foods. And the combination of these. However, I preferred to see that tea drinking is a thing in many parts of China. For travelers, road side tea stalks or tea house served many necessary functions, like resting, rehydrates, looking for directions, local informations and community interactions. Tea stalks, or tea house, would of course develop and expand their product line to foods. And depends on the location and the vision of the owner, determines what kind and how broad the food variety will be. From breads, noodles, snacks to eventually a full meal. Cantonese use dim sum as an umbrella name for foods served in a tea house. Make sense. So, basically, drinking tea and eating dim sum generally goes together and could be enjoyed around the clock, anytime you deem favourable. Sidenote drinking strong tea is deemed not favourable at certain times (not before going to bed) as well as some people (weak digestion or sick). One can always drink warm water, and referred to your Chinese family doctor or elders for directions.

These small portions of dishes allow you to try so many varities of delicately prepared "snack food". She took you to an old traditional "yum cha" (drink tea) restaurant that serves dim sum. Looks like you had ha gao (shrimp dumling), shumai (shrimp and ground pork dumpling), chicken feet, pork ribs, shrimp in rice noodle roll, and spongy cake. These are very basic varieties. There are so many more varieties of these small dishes to try. But it is great to see you enjoying your first yum cha dim sum experience!

Older generation (especially in HK) reference to YumCha (morning tea) as 一盅兩件 (One pot if tea and 2 dishes) because literally they just have tea (with unlimited hot water refill) and 2 dim sum dishes, reading their newspaper and can spend the entire morning in the restaurant. Many even being along and show off their birds (in cages) and exchange experiences. It was a very relaxing lifestyle.

For a Cantonese like me, Dim Sum or Yum Cha is our Cantonese version of brunch. On a typical weekend, the grandma of a family will go to a Yum Cha place and get a big table very early. Then all the aunties, uncles and youngsters of the family join and spend all morning & noon together drinking tea and eating all kinds of dim sum. It's really a cultural thing! I am pretty sure its origin is not from Chinatown since we use the term in Hong Kong.

The small portions were designed to merely touch the heart not sate the appetite, and as such were first enjoyed as snacks, Over time, however, yum cha ( Drink tea )has evolved, and the cuisine is now a vital part of Chinese culture.
