Love it bro!! I just made some using screwdrivers. Heated em up with a tiger torch and used another ball peen hooked in vise grips, as well as a chipping hammer in vise grips as an anvil. The beauty of this was, I could do it right in my lap and it eliminated 70% of the noise it would make on a table or ground surface...Sent my bro pictures... calling it, a "mini smithy"... right. all you need is heat, hammer, anvils...will power and artistry..🐾

Hello Gary. First time I've seen that one, but I like it! Another place ya might find an old wiper blade arm, is right outside the auto parts store. Not that I'm a trash digger, but almost every time it rains, someone always throws an old set of wiper blades, with the arm still on em. (those are probably the chines ones!) I love your videos, and I have learned a lot from you as well as a few other sharpies out there. You never stop learning, and the more you know, the better ones prospecting should be. Thanks. Jeff T

Oh, man - this was a great video for me in several ways: 1) I love your recounting of how you used to make do with "less than ideal" tools back in the day. 2) You have inspired me to continue my hunt for a nice old anvil - I've always wanted one, but am still in the "Use a trailer hitch" phase of my life. 3) I will now have a great appreciation and interest in sturdy old windshield wipers! Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge, Gary!

When tempering your tool to harden the metal, dipping it in oil will work better than water, learned that 45 years ago in high school in a class called machine shop where we made chisels and such.

I'm a new creek, crevice prospector and you IMPRESS THE HELL OUT OF ME HAHA! I've never done this before, but I'm in a part of Missouri that has a huge amount of stained old crystal and veins I found on my land so I'm gonna use your techniques. You really know your stuff. I'm gonna take the family and make em dig. They could use the exercise haha! I'll be sure to upload our findings and credit you sir with our inspiration. I'm gonna make a 6 foot crevice hook. Maybe an 8 footer too haha! I bet some crevices go that deep and the deeper the bigger like you said. I have memorized every detail you spoke. Thank you master of gold. :)

You will get a better result and less chance of micro fractures in the metal if you quench in oil instead of water. Your tool will be much harder and last a lot longer ... 😊
@TwoToes6 жыл бұрын
Oil would be better but then I have to clean all the oil off before I have them power coated.
@richardbyerssr.33554 жыл бұрын
You really want to get your metal to an almost orange to yellow lemon colored and then stick it in used motor oil to put the good carbon temper back into the metal!! If you don't get the right temp on your metal to save it getting too hard and crystallizing ! It could shatter the first time you use it and hit something too hard!
@b_antony2017 жыл бұрын
Can you expand a little on your quenching process? I've made a few crevice tools after watching your video and they're working great! I'm most curious about the double quench method you're using (quick dip then plunge). Do we need to normalize the tips of our new tools after this double quench? If using oil to quench, should we double dip as well? Any info appreciated!
@TwoToes7 жыл бұрын
When you first dip the tool it cools the tip very quickly, making it very hard, but brittle. If you quench it in one shot it will be very brittle and can snap off under pressure. When you allow the heat to travel back into the tip it relives the core. Its like a case harding, the out side of the metal is very hard but the center is still pliable. That way it's less likely to snap off at the temper line. Oil cools much slower, the temper will be more uniform and not as hard. With oil it will not snap off but will dull a little quicker. Thanks - Gary
@b_antony2017 жыл бұрын
Two Toes Thanks for the info Gary, I figured it was an interrupted quench to avoid embrittlement.. my tools have been holding up well.. thanks again for the videos, enjoying them much! Later- B

Hi Gary An hello from Scotland again! I now have that question for you . I've been prospecting An new river . This river millions of years ago must of been some site from the benches I can tell this but now is only 20ft wide . I've done lots of test holes An I'm finding gold but the gold is only in the flood layers, the deeper you go there is nothing . Also in some holes same thing but it clay . Have you seen this on any rivers you have worked . The gold must be concentrating somewhere I would think but not sure yet why the deeper you go there is none . Thanks an I enjoy your vid as I do the rest , regards devito.
@TwoToes7 жыл бұрын
I have seen this in old ancient river channels, that are high and dry now. There will be a layer that has gold, but you will find none above or below the layer. I have not seen this in any of the rivers I have worked, only old channels. I only thing that can cause this, is when a river gets wide enough, the winter high water flow doesn't get strong enough to disturb the river bottom more than a foot or two. Thanks - Gary
