TOO HOT! 🥵 HEADING EAST - Time for a 1000-mile Road Trip
We make our way to Itasca, Minnesota. Why? Actually, several reasons. First the west is HOT!! Way too hot for tent living. - and it seems like everything is on FIRE in the west! So, we always wanted to find the source of the Mississippi River and what better time than NOW.

The only one that beats going across Montana is going across Texas. Went from Santa Monica blvd to Jacksonville and never thought I would get out of Texas. The sun will rise, sun will set and the sun will rise and set again before you get across Texas my friend. Rode almost 200 miles across Montana once without a throttle cable, turned the idle screw up to run down the highway. So when you pulled over it brought back a lot of memories of one of my trips to the big sky country. Nice video. It's tough to make miles when you set up and tear down a camp every night.

I do envy you for being in my Lovely Montana where I raised my children. Montana is where I taught my children to; canoe and kayak, hike and climb, mountain bike, snowshoe and Xcountry ski while four season camping. While I am stuck here in Iowa, I dream of going home. Enjoyed tagging along on this epic trip across the plains. Never realized there was a Rugby, ND. But makes sense when (Coincidently?) there is a town across the pond which is known as the geograhical centre of England. Rugby is roughly 65 miles in either direction, east or west of the nearest English coastline. Cheers

Standard... meh you all know I am a talker by now, but seriously this is a very long story..... to recap from last weeks unfinished story. As you know from my previous story comments I rode my '81 GL1100 to RMR 6 at the Zito's ranch in Montana and then to Craters of the Moon. On Hwy 28 on my way to Craters of the Moon I stopped in a little town called Leadore got a snack and drank a lot of water.... I had 3/4 tank of fuel so didn't fill up..... In that particular part of Idaho there can be a lot of distance between gas stops. My planned route took me from Leadore to Arco (105 miles). The scooter needs carb work and mileage is suffering along with power because of that. I did not bother to factor that in and I ran out of fuel halfway between Howe ID and Butte City ID. I carry 1 liter of emergency fuel, in this case that is approx 20 ish miles. In spite of being called Butte City there is nothing but industrial farming stuff there. I ran out of fuel again 5 miles from Arco. It was 105 degrees with no shade on the narrow shoulder (maybe 4 ft wide) on hwy 33 (speed limit in this area is 80mph) mostly rural semi truck traffic. I was frankly terrified. I set my helmet on the ground behind the scooter and tossed my hi viz yellow riding jacket over the trunk. I walked off into the grass 20 feet or so from the pavement. No pride in this part of the story. I sat down trying to figure out how I was going to walk 5 miles in this heat with my physical limitations, I knew it was unlikely that I would be able to do that in under 2 hours. At this point I took a picture of my scooter to post to social media and then, I cried. I was so overwhelmed by my error in judgment and how screwed I currently was. The realization hit me full on, had I filled up in Leadore I would have made it to Arco without having to get into my emergency fuel. After a minute or two I pulled myself together and took stock of what I had in my favor. I had food, water and shelter. I was not injured and most importantly I had cell service. Then a plan formed that was so crazy I almost didn't try it. I called the local Sinclair fuel station in Arco explained my situation, the lady that answered did something and my situation started to change in a positive way. The lady asked me to hold while she contacted her husband (btw his name, like ours, is also Richard) who then brought me a gallon of fuel and followed me into Arco making sure that I arrived safely. That is where I stayed the night in the only motel room left in town due to a bicycling event in the area. So many things went wrong that day and it was by far the lowest point in my ride. It could have been much worse. However more things went right and my faith in humanity was restored a bit that day. Sometimes someone will help just because you need it, I didn't know that still happened before this event. The couple would not accept money and barely wanted to hear my words of thanks. If you go to Craters of the Moon national park and find yourself in Arco, stop and fill up at the Sinclair and have a burger at Pickle's Place about a block away. Great people there and great food too. This town imo deserves our money lol. Just one more perk of travelling and meeting new folks. LESSON LEARNED: I did not pass another fuel station without checking my distance and evaluating my personal needs, such as a butt break, potty stop, snack etc without considering if I needed fuel. If I stopped I filled my tank. Thanks for all you show and all you do. Take care on the road and keep the shiny side on top. See you next week

Yes, drove thru the prairies for 2 days - a see of grass lands and/or cornfields for as far as the eye can see 360 degrees. (Just hit 70K on the bike, btw). Have fun in the U.P. Born / raised in Deeeeeetroit. Hit Copper Harbor if you're able. Hwy 41 - you'll be encapsulated in canopied trees. Quite the drive. Wi-fi might be sketchy at best. As far as campgrounds, believe Trails End and Fanny's may be the best choices. W/ Fanny's it will be on the lake. Not Lake Superior but lake fanny. Be safe and have BIG FUN.

That's the cleanest water from the Mississippi River I've ever seen. Went to Memphis with 2 guys at work for a training class. They had never been west (or much of anywhere) of the Mississippi River, so I put them in the rental car and drove across the bridge, turned around and came back.

I’m glad to see you’re up and running. As beautiful as ND is … it’s a tuff place to be stuck! It’s a shame how the motorcycle community has deteriorated over the years! I remember when someone on a bike was broken down on the roadside, it was unthinkable to pass without stopping! Enjoy the journey!

The wife and I did that run on Rt 2 in North Dakota and Montana back in '16 on the way to Alaska. The winds were absolutely brutal that day, so we were so glad we had our new '16 RGU, as we would have been blown off the road had we tried it on our Road King. Yeah, and 2 WAS a huge disappointment. We chose it thinking it would have more small towns and scenery than an interstate . . . UHHHH, WRONG, LOL! We didn't do the camping thing, as we had quite a few 400+ mile days to do before reaching Haines, Alaska . . . and had budgeted hotel stays in for quality rest . . . and the ability and ease to start early in the day. Also most of the time the hotels offered "free" cooked breakfasts. Your vid brings back many fond memories now sweetened with the passage of time. 😌

Interesting Channel, first time I have seen it.. I would like to know more about your trailer and camping set up .. I like the light weight bike covers.. Wonder what all the Solor panel powers.. white size battery you have.. Ir your trailer has brakes.. My Friend owned a Gift Shop at Bond Falls Bruce Crossing area.. He was killed in an accident about this time last year.. while working on his truck on the side of the raod.. His wife and 6 Children I am sure still run the OutPost Gift shop. They also have a restaurant in Bruce Crossing..

Rode from Minnesota to Sturgis then Yellowstone up to Livingston Montana to a KOA on a new 79 Sportster during a gas shortage. Trying to make it to Pelican Rapids MN from Livingston in one shot. All the truck stop gas/fuel pumps were closed. We did make it to Jamestown SD only because a very nice trucker who was the last in line of three trucks hung back with us and sucked us along. I was already on Reserve when he fell back with us. Have no idea who the person was, but I still think of their kindness. It was around 1:00 AM and my girl friend behind me was wrapped in a blanket trying to keep warm 50 degrees F. We had to wait until morning to get gas. One of those trips you will always remember.

I've driven hwy 2 east and west so many times when i drove a truck from Canada to all over the USA. Some of the friendliest people on earth are in Montana!!! It's the same across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, it just keeps going and going and going then all of a sudden there's this wall of trees and its the UP but our side it's Ontario which takes 2 solid days to get across it is mind blowing how wide Canada is even compared to the USA. It can become hypnotic for sure!!!!!
