This is one of the best informative videos on a critical fitting element that is very often not paid enough attention to. (Wish the audio was a bit clearer.) The information as to the flexing of the shaft on the long irons causing dynamic lie angle changes is rarely mentioned and fitters will adjust all the lie angles to the same degree based one club. Also this information may give more credence to Bryson DeChambeau's single shaft length concept for all irons. Being that all shafts are the same length, essentially this may permit all lie angles to be the same for each iron. Unless the head weights are causing the flex of the shaft on the downswing more in one club than the other as you demonstrated happens on clubs with different shaft lengths. But it would be interesting to see what happens to the lie angles for same golfer using equal length shafts. Perhaps a follow up video on this later. Great work.

I got my first fitting in 1978. I still remember the "customizations" the fitter was going to do. As time passed, the Ping color chart came into my hands. Today I'm 70 and am looking at forgiveness clubs. When I look at Callaway Rogue X on their web site Callaway allows me to custom fit my set to my expectations. One is loft. These new forgiveness clubs off the shelf have strong loft angles. Is it smart to order a set of new forgiveness clubs and specify a more traditional loft angle, say -3 degrees, to get back to traditional loft angles? What would we lose by flattening the lofts back to traditional loft angles, and how would that affect the lie? Thanks for such a great channel.
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, it would actually affect the bounce angle not the lie. So you would be adding a degree of bounce for every degree of loft you add. If you order 2 degrees weaker lofts you should be fine though in terms of bounce. Ideally see if you can visit a local shop or fitting centre to try out the irons first and see how they perform with their stock lofts before deciding on whether to change them.

Have you guys fit many people that are fairly short? I'm 5'1" and what do you generally do to start with? Much shorter shaft or flatter lie? Being 500 miles away to the closest actual fitter, I have to fit myself to my clubs and I change shafts, lie, etc. I use the line on ball trick for fitting lie but, I either have to bend irons 4+ degrees flat or cut 1.5+ inches on the shaft or combination of both. Drivers not much I can do but cut down to 42 and just get used to the big draw on drivers. Always kinda wonder what you guys tend to do on us shorties.

Great video. One slight critique is that it’s where loft is pointed and not face angle that determining face to path relationship. Quad measures face angle which will obviously v different to loft the more lie moves away from being zero
@ianfraser31947 жыл бұрын
We're just making it easier to understand for the mass group Russell. When people think loft they think of a vertical measurement, when they think face it's perceived more as a horizontal measurement. Therefore its easier to think of lie influencing face angle in order to influence launch direction and FTP relationship..

Thanks for replying to my question re acceleration profile and deflection when fitting. Next question - there are now 'low spin, high launch' irons. I have tested the P790 and I find there is a noticeable difference in carry distance with good peak height however spin numbers and decent angles indicate that I wont be able to stop the ball on the green effectively, especially as I play most of my golf on the Melbourne Sandbelt. A couple weeks ago I played in a tournament with a +2 handicapper and he had the P790s custom fitted into +3 degrees in loft to get around the issue, but to me thats just using a club with the wrong number stamped on the head. Would using a "high Launch/spin" shaft (eg NSPro 950) be more effective than cranking the lofts to achieve more optimal numbers? Would that even work? (Im assuming that the CGs and even bounce of each head will be effected by changing lofts so much rather than being in the place that they were designed to be in). Cheers (again)
@WiseguyDesign087 жыл бұрын
interesting question..my opinion is that adjusting the loft is the best way to get better control of the spin numbers..shaft doesn't or might only have little effect if u're looking for better spin control...p730 has higher loft for each club compared to p790 and the only reason why the pro's mostly using p730 are because they want to control the spin better with their distance advantage..people are so used to compare distance with what number on the club their using instead of comparing distance with loft.. 1 of the things i realise people made mistakes is their choice of club after pitching wedge..usually people like to use the combo of 52 56 60 degree wedge but they don't realise that their pitching wedge loft isn't as near as what they think it is..if u're using a game improvement clubs..u will have a problem of gap distance if u're using 52 56 60 degree wedges..so the next time u wanna buy a club..check the loft numbers of your club to pair your wedge combo...

This is an issue we're seeing a lot Craig. I was just talking this morning to a friend of mine who is Director of Instruction at Bay Hill in Florida and he was telling me he's having the same issue. My rule of thumb is never to move loft more than 2 degree's in either direction so you don't compromise the playing characteristics of the club such as the bounce. Your are correct to say that the gentleman you played with would have been better served playing for example 5-AW with the shafts a half inch longer rather than 4-PW at std length. You could certainly look to use a different shaft that produced more spin in testing (differences would likely be minimal as long as you are looking at comparable shafts) but the primary influence to raise the spin will always be loft. I'm seeing lots of 790 / 770 combo sets going on right now, really nice blend. P790's are awesome though and for the player who doesn't necessarily need maximum precision on the angle of decent into the green these are great. My bench mark numbers for angle of decent are 43-45 degrees for a mid handicap golfer and 48-50 degrees for and an elite amateur or professional. Hope this helps Craig.

Enjoyed your detailed review ! To make the lie angle more upright can it not also be achieved by trimming the shaft shorter
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want to alter club length to achieve a lie angle change, as you're introducing swingweight issues as well as potential changes to yardage output.
@PZXZP6 жыл бұрын
Scientifically I hear you. Though in my experience of having the shafts trimmed, the changes in swing weight doesn't affect me especially since I cut the longer clubs to the same length & lie anyway. It is a case of it affects me if I know, but it doesn't if I don't know! Can I ask wouldn't it also make sense for people with slower swing speed to use lighter swing weight? If the pros are on D2-4, and the average golfer has say 20% less speed, shouldn't the average golfer therefore use a C weight instead?

I play 716AP2 and had counterweights in my clubs. On the advice of a fitter, I removed them and noticed that I was a club off in distance. Question is could removal of the counterweights have increased the dynamic loft accounting for the distance loss?
@trevourmccartney93956 жыл бұрын
2 questions. 1) where are you located? Finding a fitter like yourself is very difficult. You knowledge and expertise are top notch mate. 2) for a slicer - I was thinking of ways to close the club and was wondering if you have ever tried or had success with using a low lofted draw driver, say 8 degrees and then increasing loft to 10.5, closing the face even more. Thoughts? Keep up the great work, you are my new favourite channel on KZbin
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
We are located in Toronto, Canada. No doubt that a more closed face will help your slice. Have you tried the new Callaway Rogue Draw?
@scottchalk78086 жыл бұрын
Why are drivers not adjustable in lie being 6"5 and having a slice would a more upright lie like my irons help mitigate the slice?
@stephenperrone86944 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue. I'm 6'4". I've thought about why average or shorter pro players seem to be more consistent off the tee than taller players. The same driver in the hands of a guy like Ricky Fowler will give him and upright toe, whereas for a taller player the toe will be down. Even the amount of lie angle adjustment on the adjustable drivers may not be enough(1°-2°). Any tall player having trouble with the driver constantly fading, could partially be the excessively flat lie angle. One way to help figure that out is for the tall player to crouch more at address. This brings the toe up. Standing in the natural too tall position puts the toe down for the big guy. One tall player, Keegan Bradley, does just that. Look at him at address, he crouches down. It's not necessarily comfortable, but if the fade starts to disappear by crouching than it could be the lie angle issue. I called one manufacturer and asked if I could get a driver custom built with a 4° upright lie angle. They told me they don't do that and just to use the hozel adjustment which is limited. Needless to say, I didn't buy their club. Another way to increase the lie angle for a tall player would be to get a shaft that is significantly longer than standard. Perhaps 47" vs. The usual 44.5-45". Think about it. If you put the club on the ground, the shaft is obviously now parallel to the playing surface, so the lie angle is huge. Thus the longer the shaft, the further the head is from your body and thus the lie angle comes up. If the tall person could consistently control such a long shaft driver, the ball flight should seriously change, club head speed would go way up and distance off the tee would be very pleasing. Shaft stiffness would probably have to be altered to be stiffer than the standard shaft. I think manufacturers pay more attention to driver fitting for the pro's since there's more at stake, but we deserve the same attention since we have to pay for our equipment.

Yesterday I did a follow up after my custom fitting. On course the short irons (8, 9, Pw) went slightly right and the ång irons (5,6,7) went more left with a push draw. From beginning I got fitted for 1 deg flat. After the follow up my short irons is standard lie and my long irons are 2 deg flat. it's 2,5 deg difference between the 7 and 8 iron. Is it common tat players have more flat on the long irons and standard lie on shorter irons? My irons is Mizuno JPX 919 Tour with $-taper 120 stiff shafts.

Interesting video ~ old ideas debunked ~ ie all the clubs the same dynamic lie ~ the human element plays a roll in fitting and details really make a difference .
@kentbernard98425 жыл бұрын
Can a shaft that is too light, too heavy, ill fit, negatively affect distance, accuracy? 2017, I noticed a 1 club distance loss with both my Mizuno iron sets. Currently playing Mizuno MP59 with KBS Tour 110 Regular shafts. I got them for $200 mint condition. Previously played custom ordered Mizuno MP60 with Dynamic Gold R300 for several years. Noticed ball flight is higher than in previous years, so I blamed the Regular Flex KBS shaft, but the DGsR300 are not much better. April 2019, went for Mizuno fitting with two different fitters, within a three day period. Fitter #1 recommendation (Outdoor fitting): MP18 MMC with Dynamic Gold 120 X100. (Better feel) 15+yds longer my club. Fitter #2 recommendation (Indoor fitting): MP18 MMC with ProjectX LZ 6.5. (Good feel) 15+yds longer than club. These shafts worked but have different profiles: 120g vs 125g, High bend vs Mid Bend, Low launch vs Mid launch, same torque at 1.9, and "stiff" tips according the GolfWRX MPF ratings. The MMC iron are 2* stronger than other MP irons. That would not result in 15+ yards distance. I simply could not hit other test shafts. These shafts enabled me to be more consistent in tempo, distance, and dispersion due to the heavier weight. I want by the MMC iron, but not now. Would it be worth it re-shaft my MP59 iron with DG S300 or X100? The DG120 X100 are too expensive.

@mikeb11495 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I sole my irons, which are TM Rocketbladez. The toe sticks up off the ground. The club does not lie flat at address. It requires an uncomfortable shaft lift to go vertical enough to have the club lie flat. My iron strikes tend to be 'thin', and off the bottom couple of grooves most of the time. So I need to have the club bent toe down a couple degrees then? That would be flatter, correct?
@clubchampionmedia5 жыл бұрын
Sole of an iron doesn't necessarily sit flat on the ground at address. At impact the shaft will usually droop a bit bringing the toe down, and most golfers also have their hands higher at impact vs. address.

I'm curious if the Lie Angle is a large contributor to me pushing my ball right on my misses. I have an in-to-out swing path. And after re-checking my measurements, I have to choke down another .5 - .75" for each iron to be in the proper spot for my wrist-to-ground measurement. Could that be a big factor of leaving the club face too open at times? I know I want to lessen my in-to-out path a bit as well, but need to tackle the face at impact. I haven't tested since re-checking my measurements this morning.

@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the player, sometimes the manufacturers lie specs work well for a customer, and in other instances adjustments are made. The pattern you mentioned is common, it's also a factor that most people tend to push the long irons more than the short irons so lie angle can help with that.

Any irons can be adjusted for lie angle, some more than others (forged are more bendable)

Love to see this lie angle test on a single plane golfer, perhaps using single length clubs. The set up on single plane is very upright. It may be very telling.

Matt gets great results but I'm surprised his efficiency isn't higher. Maybe the lie adjustment will improve smash factor.

so if you hitting it to the toe, meaning you will go up 1 deg up ? or more?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
you could even try 2-3º, just depends on your swing characteristics - best to get on a launch monitor and see what's happening before making that decision though

Try a more upright lie angle at a fitting studio and see how it affects your ball flight
@M407536 жыл бұрын
yes sir, I just called my club fitter and will try it Saturday Thank you so much!! you guys are the best!!!

I believed that's what the Taylormade fitter told me when i was trying the P790's . was a upright head :) i'm using my old set, (ping anser 2014) tweak it a bit and did help out !! but this time i will get the right head and shaft for sure ! I wish i could fly up to Toronto and get fitted there-- i mean i could:) and visit at the same time for sure Im thinking combo set p 770's /P790's with a Mudos shaft!

When looking at manipulating either an open or closed club face, what would you consider first lie angle or grip size? Which do you guys see is most effective in manipulating ball flight?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Lie angle for sure. Grip size may have a little effect for some people, but none for others. Lie angle changes alter ball flight for sure and it can be quite significant. Check out our most recent iron fit video, it's a really good example of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqrRl2h6mseCrZo

Is it just me or is the graphic of club path, side angle etc. backwards? By that I mean it's showing as if he's right handed and hitting a draw, but he's left handed and hitting a fade instead. His path isn't in to out it's actually out to in. Even the host says his path is in to out and I don't think that's the case given his ball flight.

The graphic of the clubface is backwards for sure, the data itself is correct for the left-handed player though. Bit confusing, unfortunately there was a little setting we missed at the time that switches it to a left-handed club for the graphics.

Ian this is gold! Why are you not on tour? Not being cheeky but i heard you recommended Scott Gourlay before who ive been too and this stuff is polar opposite! I need to get to Canada ASAP

Nailing my irons mostly left of target though I was fitted 2 degrees upright this has me thinking perhaps should go the other way 🤔
@tonyyu56865 жыл бұрын
Are you a left handed or right hander though...
@Crazydoc9995 жыл бұрын
@@tonyyu5686 right, keeping my feet more open and moving the ball a little further forward has helped bring it in a bit,I know the feeling of a pull the odd one of those of course happens it's when I flush it and it feels great and goes 10-15 yards left I'm confused about cheers

Flat takeaway, arm runoff, limited hip rotation and just a little steep. 1.5 upright appears correct!
