I'd love to see a video that focuses on sole selection for wedges and irons for steep swingers. I think most average golfers tend to be more steep, so a video like that would benefit a lot of us. Nobody has really nailed this topic and you guys do such a good job explaining everything. This would also help us going into our fittings because we'd know what kind of irons and wedges to automatically rule out based on their turf interaction.

As a Lefty i choose Titleist , not only because they make every loft and bounce for us but also because all different grinds !! I like to open the face with My wedges , for example , even though My 56 SW has 14 dgr of bounce ( great in the bunkers ) the grind gives me the possibility to open the face a lot and hit it high IF neccesary !!! Love it 🏌️🇸🇪👌🙏

Very interesting. I have concluded that I should get a mid bounce because I would that want versatility. Soft, parkland conditions in the summer but plays much firmer when it’s closed for the winter.

I think it would be really cool if you guys did a video discussing the bounces of different iron sets, how that could potentially play a role in iron selection for a golfer, and how to know if the bounce on your iron set is too high/low. I've been wondering this for awhile and there really is not a lot of info online about it. Thanks for the great content guys!

The bunkers at my course have firm sand. That's the number one reason why I play low bounce, 4 degrees on my 60. However, our fairways are quite soft in the spring. I still feel like I can control my low point when it's soft, but it's more critical than it would be with more bounce. Conversely, those sane fairways get quite baked out in the summer months, lending themselves again to less bounce. We all need to decide what's most important, based on our course conditions. For me, low bounce is the answer. If my bunkers were fluffy, I'd consider going in the opposite direction.
@zacharymilos3926 жыл бұрын
I wish OEMs would label their wedges by "Effective bounce" instead of some static number. I played an old RAC wedge that was 6* bounce but the sole was extremely wide and played like a much higher bounce club. I was confused for so long why it played differently. GJ boys, this video is $$$.

Love the fact someone finally said wedge degree bounce loft is no longer needed. Mizuno started on the T7 wedge,they changed each bounce,effective bounce and grind for each wedge. So the 47° was different than the 62° even though you could have a 47-10 and a 62-10. Just as example. Don’t know if mizuno offers 10° on a 62. My Miura 2018 tour wedges do same thing. I use 52 and 58. Both say 10° bounce,but the grind and effective bounce is much different between the 2. They play much differently. Which I want since I use my 52 on full shots and my 58 for sand,around the green,rough and full shots. My 58 plays higher bounce than the 10° indicated.
@thevisionaryelitist6 жыл бұрын
Cheers boys. With so many variables to consider, choosing your own wedge setup is a real minefield! I'm always lost when it comes to my lob wedge 58/60 deg. I play firm Links course and am generally a bit too steep with half to full shots. but you try playing a fairly low bounce option from the sand and you're margin for error is zero. Play a higher bounce and then those fairway lob shots scare the shit out of me when the leading edge sits proud of the turf 😖 Definitely need to book in with one of the demo days this season and try a few different options.

Great stuff as usual, gentlemen. I've been trying to find out what the bounce is on my Callaway Apex 19 pitching wedge and approach wedge. They're extremely useful around the greens. The wider sole seems to just slide through turf and I get a lot of great contact, even on tighter lies. I even think that the finish is helping with turf interaction, although that could just be in my head. With more companies offering gap, approach, and sand wedges as a part of an iron set, I would think Callaway would tell you more specs about bounce and grind. Ping does!

So in short, high bounce for softer turf, low bounce for firm turf? Here in Manitoba our turfs are extremely firm.

Lived in St Andrews for 10 years and all our comps were on the Old or New. On a links like the Old, need low bounce in the fairways so I had 4 on my 60. However the traps are deep and quite soft sand so I had 14 on my 56.

I play 3 different wedge grinds. Like stated in this video, it's good for different conditions and swings that you put on. I have a higher bounce in my gap wedge, mid bounce in my Sand wedge and lower bounce in my lob wedge. The low bouce is great for when I open up my 60°, which is mainly how I use that club and the full bounce is fine with my 52° as I mainly only use for full swings. And then depending on lie and shot I want to play I can use different bounce accordingly. Top notch video again guys, a lot of benefit out of this one 👌👌

I went to a professional clubfitter and was asked , how do you use your wedges ?? And shortgame has allways been a wery strong part of My game so i told him how i wanted them ! So My 60 has 8 dgr bounce , i prefere 6 BUT the M grind makes it perfect ! The 56 was a little more difficult , we went with 14 dgr bounce in the F grind ( its SM6:s ) and even though its a F grind i still Feel wery comfortable to open the face to create the shot that i need !! And practising with a couple of scratch juniors on My club has made me even better from sand 🏌️👌🇸🇪 Keep up the good work guys !!! YOU ARE GREAT , we learn so much . Stay safe 🙏

Hitting from a tee would be a good way to show how important ground interaction is for a wedge shoot. Some knowledgeable Pro said that spin comes from hitting the ground and the ball, making solid contact and not allowing the club to move away from the ball at impact. Hitting from a tee exposes the problem with not hitting the ground properly. That also explains why some bounces work better on some surfaces.

Just recently went through a full bag fitting, but they never fit for the ball or even much mentioned the bounce, grinds, or gapping on the wedges. The more I watch your videos, the more I wonder how much I lost out on. Even my driver and 3 wood I was fitted for was only 12 yards apart, though I've always been a very good fairway wood player

I would love to see this tested with a 54 or 56 degree wedge at the 80 yard range. I'm always guessing if I should hit my low bounce 60 degree, or hold off a mid bounce 54. My impression is spin loft is better with the 54 versus getting steep on a 60.

I have typically went with Mid-high bounce Sand wedges 10-12 degrees ( 54-56 ) and lower bounce Lob wedges 6-8 degrees ( 58-60 ) . I have found that many JDM ( Japanese Domestic Market ) companies bounce options are opposite of my preference. Is that due to turf conditions typically found in that part of the world? High bounce on tight - hard lies is no fun.

This is a question I'm very interested in... recently being out of practice, I've been taking pretty decent sized divots on pretty soft turf, pretty decent amount of bounce. I go to start hitting chips and I'm worried as all hell about blading and I don't hit consistent chips. I want low bounce but what happens when I'm playing like an idiot and going really steep? I've hit shots where I've dug to china and some where I've clipped it so perfectly you get a visual definition of 'bruise the grass' on soft turf. It should be noted that I've not been playing due to work and the heat here in Australia so I'm out of practice. When I'm in tune, wedges are the best part of my game.

How is this, dont understand...shouldn't the lower strike on the high bounce wedge be even more accentuated on a tight lie producing lower shots with more spin?
@apaulmcdonough21706 жыл бұрын
The Skip, that the Bounce causes off a Firm or Tight Lie, "Lays the Face Back" thus presenting MORE Loft. IF the Skip Doesn't cause a "Bladed Shot" ... 😮
@MHMaximus6 жыл бұрын
If I dont remember wrong, Vokey himself says on a KZbin vid that more bounce produces more spin and lower ball strike. Does not make sense that the bounce gives the face more loft. In that case, wouldn't you blade the ball considering the high bounce to begin with? The gear effect of the low face hit would lower the loft, I would think.... Of course, I am no expert, just trying to understand... 🙂
@apaulmcdonough21706 жыл бұрын
@@MHMaximus , It is *the Skip.* Grab a Wedge, Stand on a Carpet and sole the wedge. Move the Grip to the Right (Right Handed Wedge), this "lays the Wedge Back" Increasing Loft without "Opening" the Wedge. Now take a Stance, *while keeping your hands in Address Position,* slide the Wedge Forward and Watch the Face. Again, Loft Added. And Ball comes into Contact Higher in the face. Vokey is talking about Normal Turf, or Rough where the Ball is "Teed Up" slightly. Here the Bounce helps the Ball and Face meet at a lower point in the Face.
