The Compact is a two layer knife that incorporates plus scales. It is a surprisingly useful knife. Though it does not have as extensive as a tool set as other Victorinox knives, I have found that it makes an excellent companion to the Victorinox Swisstool.

This sounds like a great one two punch combo that I’ve never considered probably because I was unaware. Do not be concerned about making people nervous when using tools for what they were intended. You are helping these people grow as human beings by making them aware of being self sufficient. Getting them out of their comfort zone once in a while is good for them.

I made conscious choice to use what I carry and carry what I use. The Compact fits well in that plan. For size and mass it's very efficient. It has enough tools to do a lot and it's not burdened with needless extras. It's not the only knife I ever carry, but it's always in my daily grab and go bag.

The Compact is a great two layer SAK. And yes, Felix Immler's channel is a must watch for Victorinox fans. Based on his mod videos, I am carrying my personal near ultimate SAK. Started with a Huntsman. Swapped out for plus scales with his mods: two straight pins and two tweezers, one with pointed tips. Also his dremeled can opener/package opener mod. The only thing I'm missing is the multihook with file. It doesn't have your custom aluminum 2A scales, but it does cover all the SAK toolset I prefer. Thanks for the content, I've really enjoyed your reviews.

The Compact is a fantastic Victorinox model. It packs a lot of tools for a two-layer knife. I'm a great fan of the combo bottle cap lifter and can opener and it's very easy to use. The designers paid a great deal of attention when they created this particular model, especially when they decided to add the straight pin, the ballpoint pen and the mini-screwdriver to the corkscrew. Great review pal and I do agree that a Victorinox knife is less threatening than anything else when used in public.

Another great review, Ben.Having scissors in a 2-layer knife is a terrific idea. I'll stick with my Super Tinker, though.The only way I can tell if I'm carrying a Tinker or Super Tinker is if I reach in and feel it. The difference in width and weight is all but unnoticeable. I have The Compact and love it. It fits my pocket perfectly. I use the nano key chain pocket clip to hang it along the back inseem of my right front pocket. With a zippo(I don't smoke) tucked into the little front pocket of my jeans you never know they're there. Those scissors are the bomb. I don't know why that single can/bottle opener isn't standard across their line in place of the 2 different can/bottle openers. I need a back up pen for work. I use the hook. All I need to get now is the Case Trapper as a complimentary knife. I am a transit bus driver and don't need a heavy tool for an edc because drivers don't fix anything on buses for legal and safety reasons. Yeah SAKs are not intimidating to others when you take them out. Don't underestimate that factor. I wish I could have gotten the scales in Minnesota Vikings purple or Dewalt Yellow. Standard red is so blah. Reflective safety neon green would be awesome...lol

Ben, you are correct. The SAK Compact makes a great companion tool. Many times I will pair the Compact with a Leatherman Sketetool CX or Rebar. The combined opener is a nice idea; I believe that the flexibility of two sizes of screwdrivers in two openers isn't lost with a combo tool with a medium-sized screwdriver. However, as a Tinker owner, I think that a Compact with Philips driver instead of the corkscrew would be really fine.

I also came to the same realization that the compact is the perfect companion to the Swisstool. I already had the detachable corkscrew, but its a little more cumbersome to use with the large swisstool compared to the spirit or just a 91mm SAK. For some reason, I also missed having a hook like the huntsman. The tweezers, toothpick, pin, and scissors are also great. I realized I’d rather have plain and serrated edge blades like the swisstool over the swisstool x version, so adding scissors back to my edge while filling in all those other gaps with a 91mm thats not too thick or heavy is perfect.

Been keen on the Pioneer X and probably will get it, but can't shake of the feeling that I will miss the tweezers and pen.. I find the Compact's cap lifter slips off caps a lot more than the regular 91mm. Same with the 84mm such as the Cadet. Those two are more likely to slip if I don't put a little pressure towards the cap. And when I was trying to decide if I liked the 84mm Sportsman or the 85mm Evolution 10 more, I found the Wenger cap lifter is much better than the 84mm Victorinox. They should put the Wenger cap lifters on the 84mm Victorinoxes or adjust the design a little bit. The 91mm regular cap lifter works perfect but when shrunk down it just doesn't catch the cap as well. I kinda feel silly commenting on this because they all work, but these little things can make a difference if you pop a lot of caps. lol

I always look forward to Felix's videos. He has constructed a well-appointed bushcrafted camp using just his Victorinox 'taschenmesser' (pocket knife) and tools he made (mallet, digging stick, broom, etc.) using only the Victorinox (and what he could find in nature). Shelter, tables, chairs/benches, ladders, shelving, even a rotisserie device for roasting meat over the campfire that is by the adjacent stream driving a paddle wheel that turns the shaft. He has a book available on Amazon in English that details the steps for many of those projects.

@ndrthrdr1
@ndrthrdr1 4 жыл бұрын
I've never had a mini screwdriver stuck. When they are tightly screwed in, it just takes a firm hand. A drop of baby oil, olive oil, etc. might help. I ruined one of those micro screwdrivers once. I forgot to remove it before using the corkscrew.

I carry the compact all the time. It's my favorite swiss army knife. That bottle opener is also a can opener, 3/16 flat head, number 2 phillips, pry bar, and it works pretty well for untying knots, easily my most used tool. I don't know why they don't include it to get rid of a layer on some of their other knives.

Probably, because of the plus scales as well. Plus scales are ~$12-$15 on eBay, which is ~ the differential with cheaper models. I added them to my Tinker. They're great.

I have the Compact but its a disappointment, its relatively high cost vis a vis other SAK's is IMO unjustified just because its got Plus scales. For an urban EDC its cheaper to buy the Climber & add Plus scales to it & for mixed outdoors / urban EDC then buy the Huntsman & add Plus scales to that & it will still be slightly cheaper than the overpriced Compact.
@nobody-hr1lo
@nobody-hr1lo 2 жыл бұрын
You dont really need plus scales. The climber or huntsman Will do just fine. I have all 3 but I have to recognise the compact Is special. To each their own. Nowdays Its a Pioneerx in the keychain plus A Leatherman multi in belt and some other stuff here and there. You cant have enough tools.

@@nobody-hr1lo Happy Tuesday Michael. I have 8 Huntsman & 8 Climbers of various colors or decorative scales, both with & without Plus scales ( I find the pen useful ) . My Plus scaled ones are also fitted with a SwissQlip for convenient pocket carry & my Silver Tech & decorative scaled ones are carried in a pocket sheath & have a paracord lanyard and I have replaced the toothpick on all my Huntsman & Climbers with the Firefly ferro rod & added a tinder spiral & a mini-screwdriver to the corkscrew . I also frequently carry a Pioneer X ( I have 4 ) or the Farmer X , which IMO is the best of all the Pioneer models & easily the equal of the Huntsman tool wise even without any scale tools. For my keychain SAK I use the Midnite Manager & rotate the other larger EDC SAK's depending on where I am going or what I am doing on any given day. I dislike belt carry & I even carry my 4 larger 111mm SAKS ( Alpiner, Outrider, Forrester & Garant ) in a pocket sheath. As for a Leatherman, I had & used one for 30 years at my last place of work & gifted it to my successor ( as far as I know he still uses it 10 years on ) . Nowadays I use a combination of a Ranger, Deluxe Tinker, Spartan Lite & Watch Opener SAK as my home tool kits plus all the regular tools that most of us have at home.
