Great fly, easy to make. It will always have a special place in my heart, caught my first ever atlantic salmon on a variation of this one.

I have a couple friends who moved to southeast Alaska late last year. I'm thinking to tie some of these up in colors that could pass for pink salmon smolt as the sea-run Dollies start to move in shore. It's going to be my first baitfish pattern as I learn to tie flies.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Have never tried tying a fly and wasn't sure where to start. Your demonstration was very easy to follow. Going to order the materials and make many of them to practice. I have over the years come up with very specific tubeflies that I use that look very different from Sunray Shadow, but will be fun to try something new. Hopefully some day I can tie my own duplicates of those flies that I now custom order.

Hi Davie This is a very good pattern in Norway perhaps the most popular one.Catch big stillwater trout's too.Even big pike's.Seatrout loves it.

Hi maria lax, Using the Uni-8/0 thread helps to get a small head and as well just watch how much material you are putting on as this makes a huge difference, if you are struggling with the head it's mostly down to this..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words... +Davie McPhail Hi Davie, thank you for your answer. I will follow your advice! The shape of your heads are really just absolutely perfect. I'm dreaming of getting a result like that. It must be a great satisfaction to get that quality of heads. I hope one day i will be able to get at least a bit closer to that. But it will take me lots of practice. Tight lines!

Another excellent flie and one I have tried thanks to your video, but with different materials, went to the G.A.C and was talking to davie who told me to use Artic runner instead silver fox and he said if you can see the white then its too much im new to fly tying and fly fishing so not going to debate but how do you feel about that?, as your sunray looks amazing all the Kendo

Hi Clive, I'm not fussy on the colour of the herl whether it's green or bronze as both work, although I've added a little green highlander goat as well as the black into the wing which works really well and is named after Ray Brooks' wife as it was tyed for her.. All the very best Davie

Is the original with white bucktail or brown/black squirrel 🐿 tail as underwing?

Hi Ole, I have mostly tyed them with white bucktail and also the brown side of the white bucktail...I've also used grey squirrel which I know many feel that this is the hair which was used on the original dressing..I have attached a link to a website that shows a set of the Sunrays in the original packaging and by the looks of them it's bucktail though in the article he saids that the originals were tyed with white tipped squirrel..
