Tip for outside welds: mix a batch of two-part clear epoxy and brush-paint a thin coat onto the welds, allowing it to fill any voids or hollows. Stipple the epoxy into the weld with the tip of the brush ... THEN paint over with the black paint after the epoxy has cured. Primer not needed. Your welds will be impervious to rust for many years.

Well, but, sure, yes, my Uncle Cosmo had the same problem with the LBG, but he was far, far brighter than the rest of us. He worked out that if the LBG is very heavy you can just let it out the bottom of the boat by cutting a few small gas holes in the hull. Just goes straight through. Worked like an absolute charm. I'd love to show you the proof but unfortunately shortly after installing them the boat sank.

Stu, you can cut into the broken off piece in the compressor with a fine tooth jig saw. Be gentle like,so not to damage the thread if possible. After making a cut or two use your broken bolt extractor tool. The cuts should relieve the tension on the broken off thread. Squirt a bit of auto transmisson oil around the thread as well it often helps with rusted steel threads.

I would put eye bolts through the transom to lift your dinghy - that'll take most of the weight of the boat and all of the motor. Those handles are a guaranteed failure point! Front mount could be the front tow point (or a bridle to either side, even)
@BigMouth380cal5 жыл бұрын
The method a Pipefitter would use to remove that broken chunk of the old pressure switch is to use a "Roundnose Chisel". This chisel lets you cut into the old pipe without damaging the receiver's threads. Once theres is a bit of a cut on one side, you can roll the remaining pipe into itself and ultimately back it out.

Tip for electrical posts and terminals: Lightly brush a very thin film of oil onto the connections with a brush and then wipe away, leaving a light surface film. Brush paint clear RTV onto the connection on all facets and allow to cure. The oil acts as a release agent, should you need to remove the RTV later with a penknife. Because salt air permeates the entire boat, no connections in the battery and electronics bays should be left bare.

If you take the handle off the wench and lock tight the bolt, you can get a cheap 20 dollar cordless drill and a bit and socket to turn the wench back into an electric, just store the drill, adapter, and socket in the wheelhouse, I bought one that was a worm gear so no matter when the pressure was let off the wench would stay in the same position, like an internal break. I use this all the time for water heaters, lifting stuff in my attic etc. With a couple of u bolts, you can attach the wench to anything.

If you haven'y already got one fitted, a very good device for 2x 12v Pb batts in series is a battery equaliser, one batt is always a different resistance to the other batt so SOC drifts away from 50% each. The equaliser constantly corrects the difference and so the batts always have same SOC. A 10A Redarc equaliser is fine, no need for a larger one for your setup, it will never need 13hours to equalise :). Much Bigger capacity and huge alternator would change that.

Hey Stu, have you considered sometime in the future a cover over the aft portion of the boat? You wouldn't have to cover all the way to the stern, maybe half the deck space. This would serve several purposes. One it would give you some shade to work under. Second it would give you some more real estate to add more solar panels or a place to mount work lights or other fixtures. If it was up to me I would add a hard top over two thirds of the aft deck. That would leave you some uncovered work space but would give plenty of shade or shelter from stormy weather!

Curious as to why you put the masking tape around some of the winch base. Now you have a narrow manky strip that didn't get any cleaning spray, like the rest of the deck, or the chair, or the gear downwind. Looks like you're having fun with this project, thanks for sharing.

Excellent point. I'll clean that bit later. :)

Snapped fitting removal. I just had to do 2 of these bastards on my heat exchanger. Got them out by using chisel just smaller and leaning over so side edges gripped the inner face of the fitting and they undid eventually by keeping the lean on and winding them out!!

Glad you got them out. I finally got this one out yesterday too.
