The low E string is tuned to a D that is why it sounds different.

Double drop D tuning. Neil Young was famous for it. Off the top of my head I know he tuned that way on Cinnamon Girl, the Needle & the Damage Done, and Don’t Let it Bring You Down, 3 of my favorite Neil tunes ever.
