Dead End Hip Hop

3 жыл бұрын

Tyler, The Creator returns with his first project since dropping his grammy-winning album, Igor, in 2019. Never one to repeat himself, the Wolf Gang captain delivers a body of work that was surprising, to say the least. Being that this is Tyler’s sixth album, the crew was very excited to see what he had to offer.
After watching the video, be sure to drop some comments and let us know what you thought of the album.

I'll make this short: my younger brother loved 2009/2010 Tyler. I was a little older, so I had no clue who the OFWGKTA crew was....when my brother was hanging up newspapers and cutting out eyes on things plus the upside down cross stuff, I really hated this young dude and the influence he had on my kid brother. The whole energy was dark and almost outwardly hurtful. TIME JUMP to now: my brother is gone, and it sucks he cannot see how much progression this artist has made. I am completely in love with Tyler as a creative. Nasim died in Jan 2017 and Flower Boy came out soon after. I loved the project and found a whole new respect for Tyler and I stared to understand his and my brother's anger a lot more. IGOR was another huge leap, but CMIYGL is hands down his best album, and the most gratifying release of 2021.

The “I don’t know who Gravediggaz is” thing is a really old tweet from like, 2010 or something. Because back in the Goblin/Bastard days everybody was calling him horrorcore and comparing him to artists and groups like Gravediggaz which he was very vocal about being annoyed by. If I had to guess he probably checked them out in the years since then.

The Wilshire story is most apparent in Corso, Wasyuname, Sweat / I Thought You Wanted Dance, and Wilshire, whereas there is also a large focus on his own growth as an artist throughout the album. There’s a lot of flexing about his wealth and resources, but a lot of flexing about his own personal growth and how travel has really effected him in a good way. I think this growth paints him as the classy, tasteful, person he is, and he feels like the girl and him are on a similar wavelength because of it. That’s why it’s so frustrating that she’s taken, because he feels like he’s grown into her.

It is interesting that they haven't connected the three albums together. The idea that there is no story in the album totally misses the narrative that is explained on WILSHIRE: All of the elements of that song are sprinkled throughout most of the other songs. Tyler exposing that he has all of the material gain but is still struggling with loneliness is literally started on Flower Boy and continued throughout this album. He seems to be coming to a place of gratitude with that fact. He mentioned loving people from the shadows twice, and expounds on it. Manifesto explores how he is still answering for his past while growing past it. If you think of that in the context of his maturity, and his mother's rant you can see the symetry throughout the album with the three themed of gratitude, maturity, and grappling with loneliness in the midst of success.

@@ArmLegLegArmHead47 there's honestly not much to be all that interested about with CMIYGL tho its just some dope raps on some dope beats. its basically like a gangsta grillz mixtape just some dope rap songs. i love the album tho 9/10 for me

@@julianserene I agree but at the same time it’s amazing to see Tylers growth as a person and as an artist. MANIFESTO and MASSA are top tier Tyler rap tracks, while SWEET and WUSYANAME are beautiful love songs which could have been on IGOR. Definitely a better rap album than Cole shit and they hyped that shit up to the fullest imo.

The line on lumberjack that sounds familiar (at least to me) is reminiscent of Kendricks and Kayne’s “project torn up, gang signs get thrown up” on Maad City and We Major. These are the songs I think of when I hear this song

I agree with the first 3 but not Jay and Nas. Jay and Nas have been dropping great features, and arguably you could say they drop verses that are for consideration for verse of the year. And Both 4:44 and Kings Disease are better albums than Wayne’s last albums, in my opinion at least.
