I'll make this short: my younger brother loved 2009/2010 Tyler. I was a little older, so I had no clue who the OFWGKTA crew was....when my brother was hanging up newspapers and cutting out eyes on things plus the upside down cross stuff, I really hated this young dude and the influence he had on my kid brother. The whole energy was dark and almost outwardly hurtful. TIME JUMP to now: my brother is gone, and it sucks he cannot see how much progression this artist has made. I am completely in love with Tyler as a creative. Nasim died in Jan 2017 and Flower Boy came out soon after. I loved the project and found a whole new respect for Tyler and I stared to understand his and my brother's anger a lot more. IGOR was another huge leap, but CMIYGL is hands down his best album, and the most gratifying release of 2021.

The Wilshire story is most apparent in Corso, Wasyuname, Sweat / I Thought You Wanted Dance, and Wilshire, whereas there is also a large focus on his own growth as an artist throughout the album. There’s a lot of flexing about his wealth and resources, but a lot of flexing about his own personal growth and how travel has really effected him in a good way. I think this growth paints him as the classy, tasteful, person he is, and he feels like the girl and him are on a similar wavelength because of it. That’s why it’s so frustrating that she’s taken, because he feels like he’s grown into her.

It is interesting that they haven't connected the three albums together. The idea that there is no story in the album totally misses the narrative that is explained on WILSHIRE: All of the elements of that song are sprinkled throughout most of the other songs. Tyler exposing that he has all of the material gain but is still struggling with loneliness is literally started on Flower Boy and continued throughout this album. He seems to be coming to a place of gratitude with that fact. He mentioned loving people from the shadows twice, and expounds on it. Manifesto explores how he is still answering for his past while growing past it. If you think of that in the context of his maturity, and his mother's rant you can see the symetry throughout the album with the three themed of gratitude, maturity, and grappling with loneliness in the midst of success.
@nicksharma82383 жыл бұрын

CMIYGL is Tyler's most eclectic project to date, and kind of encompasses his personality as an 'artist' way more than it does his skills as a 'rapper'; which I think is his current direction after the critical acclaim of IGOR. Between the 'Gangsta Grillz' producer tags and DJ Drama's narration, the whole album feels like a fever dream. The feeling of being enraptured in the world Tyler creates is more enjoyable than his lyrical substance except a few tracks like "WILSHIRE," "SWEET - I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE," "MASSA," etc., and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just that, even on IGOR, I felt that Tyler is extremely polarizing: the production is so dense, shifting, and technical that I'm always thinking, "Do people get this? Or are they just saying they do so they don't look stupid?" It's great that on CMIYGL, Tyler raps for real again and his voice is gruff, commanding, and 'in-the-pocket' enough that it feels like that phone call most of us need. Super satisfying to hear this side of Tyler again on this style of production. It captures a lot of the artistic whimsy I felt from Kendrick on TPAB, but much more unbridled and aimless, fitting the album title perfectly. In any case, I enjoyed it way more than "The Off Season," barring tracks like "a m a r i," which was outside of Cole's typical wheelhouse. Definitely grammy bait, and it deserves it.

The line on lumberjack that sounds familiar (at least to me) is reminiscent of Kendricks and Kayne’s “project torn up, gang signs get thrown up” on Maad City and We Major. These are the songs I think of when I hear this song

Feefo and Myke have good insight on this. I have believed that this project is a mixtape dream come true. Why else have Wayne and DJ Drama on it. Even the artwork recalls roots. Let's just hope mr Carter can give that feature killer energy to T.
