Those are Soldiers who have many battle honours to their credit, They have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, The Falkland Islands and many more places during many conflicts including WW1 & WW2 , These men are NOT toy soldiers by any means guarding the Queen is just one of their duties among many, Their parade uniforms are Traditional and have a long history , Many men in the Scots, Irish, Welsh and Coldstream guards have fought with great distinction many paying the ultimate price for their Brothers and Country, They are as courageous as any soldier that you’d wish to meet, The British Army has no place or Time for Toy Soldiers these men are professional soldiers of the highest calibre.

Disney made The Nutcracker, Russian Shchelkunchik, ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The last of his three ballets, it was first performed in December 1892. Disney made his movie from this ballet as it was originally performed..those toy soldiers have been around since the 17th century at least as toys and Christmas decorations..Disney didn't sensationalise them.

@@shirleyjenkins11 Lovely history there. But you do know the Foot guards have been around since exactly the 17th century right? Yes there have always been “Action Figures” or “Toy Soldiers” as you put it, but what I’m saying is that Disney actually sensationalised and influenced the concept of what Americans know in modern day by way of the debut: “Babes in Toyland” which was made in 1961.

These guards are serving soldiers. They are not permanent fixtures at the palaces. My husband was in the Welsh guards. He did duties at Buckingham palace and Windsor. He also did duties in Berlin guarding the Berlin Wall (prior to being demolished). The men also go to war. My husband was in the guards when the Falklands war happened. They are most certainly not just a tourist attraction. They are also NOT CALLED The Queens Guard that seems to be an Americanism. The are called The Household Division - the cavalry and foot guards who guard 'The Queen. ' The men you will see on guard at Buckingham Palace, (and other locations), are not just ceremonial guards but first and foremost professional infantry soldiers.

The Queen's Guard is the perfectly correct term for the detachment of infantry performing dismounted public duties. The Queen's Life Guard is the detachment of cavalry performing mounted public duties. The Household Division is the term for all six (five regular plus London Guards, reserve) regiments of foot guards and two regiments of household cavalry. It includes those who are on public duties and those who are not. Other organisations from outside of the Household Division can provide the Queen's Guard or the Queen's Life Guard. This happens quite often. It can even be provided by a non-military unit - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has provided the Queen's Life Guard in the past.

As a Coldstreamer, I love watching Americans reacting to guards related content. So the Coldstream Guards were the first Regiment that formed the British army back in the 1600's by George monck. The guards are one of the British army's elite infantry unit's, along side the Ghurka, Para and Marines. The guards also have their own parachute regiment within which not many people know. Nobody understands how much practice goes into the very amount of Drill you need to perform perfectly, such as trooping the colour. But it pays off. Sad to give a comment like this post death of the Queen. I'm happy to have had the honour of serving for her whilst she was around. R.I.P ma'am 🇬🇧

Most of the comments confirm the seriousness of the guards duties. They are serving soldiers who have also served in combat. So yes all the arms are fully functional weaponry. I have a seen a video of a tourist walked over after being warned. He deserved it in my book. Not to criticise Tyler but it just shows how introspective the US are with regard to other parts of the world. The guards are there for a serious national purpose but because they have a spectacular uniform and the changing of the guard is spectacular tradition its all seen by the US as a Disney like performance for the tourists. Nothing could be further from the truth. No one would dare regard or disrespect the US National Guard the same way. All tourists should be more respectful and do some research before they travel. Whether you like them or not the British Royals are thousand year old ruling institution not a Disney side show.

Agree living not far from Windsor and when I have been there as someone who is British it irritates me when tourists have no concept of who these men are and the fact they have been to the active theatres of war around the world. Americans are by far the worse one when I was there last made this mental comment as to why the castle was built where it was under the flightpath to Heathrow I addressed him politely and firmly that the castle had been around longer than his country had existed and that furthermore, it is where it is because it's a defensive position outside of London in the medieval period and so on. The man's wife went red in the face he looked like he wanted to crawl under a rock. Sure I left them red-faced and embarrassed but I could not have cared less. Those Americans who do take time to learn about the history and places outside in the rest of the world I commend you for doing so and please understand for native members of whichever country you are in if they correct you they are not doing it to spite you it's because from what I have gathered the way history is taught in the US it's US-centric which is not good if you travel abroad and do what I have used as an example above. And yes Royalty is not a side show it's part of the democracy here and the men who protect those places have actually been to war to keep us all safe. So you know a little respect goes a long way as well as some basic knowledge of history.

"Queen's Guard" is just ("just"!) one of the rotating postings of the armed forces, including the Navy and Royal Air Force as well as the Army, and also Commonwealth forces and the famous Gurkhas. The Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards are the most 'usual' ones so they are the ones you think of, with the 'giant fuzzy hats'. But it's not a full-time job for any of the regiments concerned.

They aren't actually called the Queens guard. That's just what the tourists call them. They are actually the household division made up of five regiments. Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Irish Guards, Scots Guards & Welsh Guards. There are also two mounted regiments. Their primary role is the same as all other regiments, defend the nation. They also do the ceremonial role of guarding various royal palaces. Highly trained & well organised with many battle honours attributed to them, they are not just tourist attractions.

I can never understand why these rather demeaning cartoons are sometimes selected for reaction videos. Everyone in them always looks quite ridiculous. The basics are very simple. The most commonly seen troops on public duties (but not the only ones) are from the Guards Regiments who wear their ceremonial uniforms won in battle long ago to discharge this role, and which less long-established countries with little tradition might consider to be actors hired for the purpose. The Grenadier Guards’ first battle honour is dated 1656 and they are, together with the Coldstream, Scots, Welsh and Irish guards the elite infantry of the British army. Disrespect them and you disrespect the UK and particularly our monarch, their commander-in-chief. On a modern battlefield you will look in vain for their red tunics. I have noted on social media generally that US veterans usually speak very highly of British service personnel alongside whom they have fought. If I were to say of, as an example, the US Marine Corps that they are not really fighting professionals but simply a tribute act to old Hollywood films usually appearing with John Wayne that would be a reasonable comparison, I think. Every US citizen would turn puce and explode in anger!

Oh dear. Both the cartoon and the chap’s comments are very American, seeming to assume that a guardsman in a bearskin and red tunic follow closely on the heels of the Queen wherever she goes. Not too sure why the police are shown in American uniforms! Of course other regiments, as well as the Royal Navy and the RAF take turns in guarding Buckingham Palace. Unlike in the video, guardsmen do not have a regimental crest on their bearskins but are distinguished by the crests on their collars and the groupings of buttons on their tunics.

As soon as I see it's going to be one of these (silly) cartoons I move on - they make no effort at all to present reality and, I think, only add to the number of misconceptions people pick up. Like the American cops/car combo...they always make them American cops in these cartoons no matter what country they are in: perhaps they really believe that American cops serve all over the world?? They also play into the myth of everyone in UK living in small villages and houses with thatched roofs; and they play to ghastly stereotypes with the way they portray human figures. All of which might be bearable if only they gave out correct information, but they don't seem to find that necessary and just re-cycle existing misinformation. e.g: These men are there to guard the life of the Queen of GB & Northern Island; who is also the figurehead of fourteen other countries, including Canada and others across Asia-Pacific and the Caribbean; as well as 54 Commonwealth Nations. She's kinda important. Dear gods, how could they protect her if they only had blanks in their guns as this wanker asserted? They carry SA80A2 assault rifles, each has a 30 round magazine and a very sharp bayonet. Which is very obvious when you see an actual picture rather than a cartoon character. You don't get appointed as a Queen's Guard unless you're a top-notch soldier in modern warfare. Part of the reason they wear those bright red ceremonial uniforms is so that they stand out to remind people that the Queen is protected by the finest soldiers who serve in the British Army. Also, if there were some sort of emergency people could easily see them and make their way towards them. Obviously the Queen has her own plain-clothes security detail; she has armed police; and more armed but plainer-clothed soldiers. Oh, and there are vids. around which show the poor buggers keeling over to attention. They just go down splatt! and hit the deck still rigidly at attention. No wonder noses get broken!!

The "fuzzy hats" that the guards wear are made from bear skin. Canada sends the skins every year after their annual bear cull. Also, this year was the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

I've seen quite a few videos on tourists trying to interfere with them on duty and the tourists are the ones who leave embarrassed this also applies to the horse guards who have an sven more difficult job maintaining their control of a huge animal while people want to touch the horse or worse the Trooper . I'm an Australian and when I visited London it gave me great satisfaction to see a Karen type woman get shoved physically out of the way of a squad of marching guards , she complained at the top of her voice but everyone just laughed at her and when she wouldn't take the hint she was escorted away by an armed police officer , I'm sorry to say she was an American .

The Household Division of Queen's Guards consist of, in seniority : The LifeGuards, The Blues and Royals (Cavalry), Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Welsh Guards (you can tell the difference by the number of buttons on the jacket, insignia on the collar and plume in the bearskin. They do a two year Ceremonial rotation before going back into active service for deployment. These guys would complete crap all over the Sentinels.

The “Queen’s guard” rotate duties between that and regular soldiering. So, when tourists go up to them and take the Mickey, they should be aware that these chaps have served in Afghanistan - with weapons, live ammunition; trained in hand to hand combat and everything … Be aware! The only thing stopping them fighting back is their training and the fact that they’ll get disciplined for responding. (And fined £290 for smiling.) Sometimes the Gurkhas are on guardsmen duty - they’ll take you out with their famous little knives, the Kukri. Diced and spliced in a couple of seconds …

The Scots guards were one of the key units in the Falklands victory. They were also deployed to Afghanistan. They are basically infantry units that also carry out ceremonial duties.

The "Queens Guard" is actually not a military unit, it is a Duty Assignment to guard the Royal Palaces, carried out by members of the British and Commonwealth Armed forces - themajority of the time the duty is performed by one of the 5 Regiments of Foot Guards in rotation, but others like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the RAF Regiment, the Ghurkas and others have performed the duty. When the Duty is carried out by a Foot Guards Regt the wear the Ceremonial Red Tunic and Bearskin, at other times they dress as normal soldiers and deploy operationally and have done several tours of Iraq and Afghanistan etc. The bodyguards to the monarch is provided by the Royal Protection Squad of the Metropolitain Police - the "Queens Guard" guards the Royal Palaces (Buckingham Palace, St James Palace, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London) and do so regardless if the Queen is in residence.

The guards at Buckingham Palace and St James Palace are on duty for 24 or 48 hours. During that time a Guardsman will have 2 hours on sentry duty and then 4 hours off. They can't even go to the toilet. That's why they have thick woollen tweeds (trousers), After the 2 hours they can go and eat or whatever. They can march 10 paces one way, and ten paces back whenever they need to, to keep the blood circulating. They do have a particular order that if they feel like fainting they have to faint to attention.

@@joshuapeckham2453 It's only correct for the personnel guarding the Queen at a given point in time - so includes the Army, Navy and RAF and indeed the RCMP. @@wessexdruid7598 yes, I think we're agreeing. But as far as I recall from the video I'm pretty sure "The Queen's Guard" was being used to refer only to those on public duties at BP, WC, StJ etc. rather than to the Household Division/Foot Guards. Admittedly the video was crap from start to finish, and also didn't mention that other units occasionally provide the Queen's Guard. Although in your comment you mention RCMP - I only recall them providing the Queen's Life Guard, not the Queen's Guard (dismounted).

This is the most irritating and obnoxious explanation of the Queens Guard you could have found. There are much better sources around - or maybe watch a "Trooping of the Colour." Their uniforms come from a long and very distinguished history - like the "bearskin" helmets being taken as a battle honour from the defeat of Napoleons Guard at Waterloo. They are NOT tourist attractions or "toy" soldiers.

The Foot Guards consists of five regiments. The Coldstream Guards, the Grenadier Guards, the Welsh Guards, the Scots Guards and the Irish Guards. Each has a djstinguished military history and are battle-hardened combat soldiers. The other elements are the mounted guard. The Household Cavalry made up of the Blues and Royals. Again, highly trained combat soldiers operating light armoured vehicles. They are not to be treated lightly. The rifles are standard issue combat weapons. Do not be fooled, they have a ceremonial role but, if seriously threatened they could react with sufficient and appropriate force.

British Guards are not at all chocolate box soldiers. They are elite front line combat troops performing ceremonial duties. The Coldstream Guard date from 1650 and have 117 battle honours. The rifles may not be loaded but the bayonets are real and all a British infantryman needs. Other units are sometimes assigned ceronial duties and thus become the Queen's Guard for the duration. These can be formed by troops from RAF,Navy ,Commonwealth units or Ghurkas. You do not want to mess with any of these people.

Right…Let’s sum it up easily… the Queen’s Guards are nothing more than a UK version of Disney characters - they dress up in their colourful red costumes and fuzzy hats and march up and down to the Disney theme choon “when yiu wish upon a star”:and all that shouting “make way for the Queen’s Guards” is done for show and the benefit of tourists to film an “action shot” with their fancy Go-Pro cams etc - it’s just good acting! The Guards are all theatre trained and know how to keep a straight and disciplined posture. Of course, they have to have an Equity card that they must show when they sign up to do a day’s shift, standing to attention outside the Queen’s residence in all weathers - they do think it’s a good gig. And they love nothing more than the tourists “having a laugh” by teasing them, trying to make them smile or say something rude or even touching them! It’s all part of the ‘act’ darling as they just stand still - the theatre training worked… There - that should explain everything! (Whilst seriously thinking…DO NOT MOCK OUR MILITARY! 😡😡)
