I actually needed this right now. I just had an awful class for the first time in forever, got submitted repeatedly, left bruised mentally and physically... but then seeing this I'm reminded that there will always be those rolls no matter how good you are. I also had the wrong impression of the The Cellar after filming cage fights a few years ago, I thought it was a dirty place with questionable leadership based on the antics of one fighter... but that place and the instructors/black belts are clearly top shelf.
@bryonbauer6322 жыл бұрын
I think you’re looking at it wrong. You’ll learn more from your losses than your wins. Besides, if you stick with it long enough you’re going to get submitted, and bruised a lot more. We have all been there. Learn from it and move on. Sometimes it’s our ego that gets bruised the most. Keep on Rolling.

This video helped my self esteem today. The last month or two, I've been bummed out when I'm done wrestling for the day. (We do submission wrestling at our gym. We don't have belts, but in April I barely won the tournament I entered as a blue belt, so that's my current skill level.) I felt like I progressed a lot this year, until about a month or two ago. All of my buddies at the gym have just been kicking the crap out of me lately. I haven't submitted ANYONE in about a month, though I've been close a few times. Watching you struggle against those guys but knowing your skill level just helps reinforce the fact that we all have struggles at some point. I gotta just keep working hard and hopefully get to your level some day. Thanks for the videos.

Really enjoyed the video. Took me awhile to get used to the tone of your channel. To see that lower belts can tap higher belts more often than you would think, felt weird at first. But I remembered that's how it is any gym including mine. You're just showing what it's really like on the mats. I enjoyed your self deprecating commentary. You're a true black belt and a killer. I've really never liked and commented on a video before, but this video deserves so much more appreciation. Some black belts are scared to ever admit that their is black belts and then their are black belt competitors with 15 years experience and there is a slight difference. It's a pleasure to see you roll with some high level competition and test out the other gyms in your area just to broaden the amount of different games you encounter. I would love for you to travel to some of the 10th planets, Atos, and AOJ gyms in your state. Thank you for the content and great details while defending these beasts.

Some people have legit black belts and are blind or don't even have legs or missing an arm. My point is that martial-arts in general are a very deep and broad life practice. Reducing jiujitsu to a who can tap who, or comparing yourself to others, is probably the surest way to become miserable. We all have a unique journey.

This is why I love the IJF judo system, (in the UK) u can't get graded in your club,, only the theory there, there are gradings every 3 months away in sports centres but if you don't win your fights with submission or ippon, you don't get scored and don't get graded, you can do judo for 20 yrs and not get graded if you don't win your fights away. It keeps all grades more or less equal, I think BJJ should use a similar system and you you get a myriad of fighters.It also works the other way, if your a descent grappler and get through gradings each time, you get caught and levelled later on by experience fighters, thus levelling again, mind you the system has been going a long time to perfect. Great channel.

I have heard Black Belts talk about rolling with another Black Belt sometimes that makes them feel like a White Belt again...I think we just saw that in action here, folks, and Tyler took it like a champ. Respect to you Tyler for taking tough rolls with grace and as a learning experience. I think the greatest Black Belt feeling like a White Belt experience I have ever seen on video was Roy Dean's 4th Degree Testing Crucible. Do you believe anyone should actually demote themselves or be demoted? If you were good enough to earn it then you earned. If you meet someone who taps you a lot maybe you just had an off day, or maybe you just need to learn (as you did). Everyone knows that a black belt is just the beginning and does not mean you know everything. I know and understand the whole debate over belt worth. I actually like the belt system as long as you understand that it means you have learned what your instructor wanted you to learn to achieve, and it sets certain expectations for yourself to grow to the next level. I have no respect for someone who gives up rank to start over in the same style. I feel like it is kind of cheating to make others think you are only a white belt when you actually earned a black. At black belt level or any rank level if someone is not where they want to be they should be able to figure out what areas they need to work on to get to that point, but it is unlikely they have to relearn everything. If someone believes they do not deserve a belt they should not have tested for it, but once you have let that feeling of not deserving it push you to improve in a way to deserve it. I have had that experience of getting promoted to a belt that after getting I did not think I should be there, but I worked until I believed I was good enough. One other short rant I do not think someone should stay one belt for longer than necessary. I feel like it is a lack of courage to rise in rank and to be tested at the next level. If someone is a white belt but their skill is actually a blue belt level new white belts could be discouraged by that experience. That is another person I lose respect for is someone who stays where they do not belong just because they can win at that level. My belt rank is for me and my knowledge. It represents my work and accomplishment and at the same time, it should help me gauge myself by others at the same level to improve and continue working.

@@TylerSpangler I'm not the one catching the rolls, I just think your diagnosis of needing a better o/u isn't really the main issue (I've seen yours in other videos, it's great!). Rather, I think your hips are back too far and being on your knees you can't really put pressure forward when you step that foot out to pass from a combat stance without your knee pinning that bottom hook. It's why Jorge was constantly able to create space with the bottom hook and push you toward your post to constantly go out the back, invert, or attack that dogfight position; he had so much extension with his bottom hook. Dave did similar things, but with your upper body. By keeping your knee to the mat and your hips pointed away, you're always facing the direction you're passing (your left) and not your opponent, giving them a ton of back and shoulder exposure. I personally struggled in this position a LOT right before purple but studying Romulo's passing totally changed my game and opened up everything for me. His JJX course is well worth the money imo. Sorry for the essay, bud
