To answer that question: Yes, they do. But why don't they at certain times and in certain situations? In this video, I show you how bass react to LIVE crawfish underwater in their habitat. I provide some great commentary, and I hope you guys learn something! Let me know what you think about the footage in the comments below!

I raised a bass from the size of my little finger to around 4 pounds in a 50 gallon aquarium. I named it Polaris like the submarine. I fed it lots of different things. It would eat raw meat out of my fingers. It liked minnows, goldfish and guppies. I would feed Polaris crawfish though and he love them. He would suck them into his mouth when they put their claws up and it happened so fast it would bend their claws backwards and snap them off. In an instant the crawfish would be gone and there would just be a couple of claws swirling around in the current caused by the attack. Polaris was able to eat even large crawfish while he was still pretty small, but as he grew he began to eat several at a time. Watching him eat them was pretty cool because he would suspend in front of them with his head down and his body at about a 45 degree angle from the bottom and wag his tail in excitement, almost like a dog. He would watch them and then as if sensing his opening he would suck them up and the only thing left was the swirling claws. Watching Polaris eat over the course of several years made one thing evident... He would eat a crawfish even if he wasn't hungry. He'd let small fish hide out for a few days sometimes. If I put a crawfish in his tank though, he would eat it. It was more like he didn't want it in there or just enjoyed the thrill of eating them. When he got big I released him in the same lake I'd caught him from. At first he kept swimming in a circle by the bank acting like he didn't want to leave and I just sat there watching him, a little bit sad and happy all at the same time. After a while, I guess he figured it out and he swam away. That was the last time I ever saw him.

The clip of the male bass saying "no" to the female fish when she tries to eat the live crawfish is very interesting , that clip really demonstrates what the behavior of the couple bass are like during spawning. You should show this video to a research institution of something because this is some actual hard evidence of behavior in fish!

While on the bed bass really aren't in a "feed" mode. They will move crawfish and other things out of the bed but really won't eat them as they pose no real threat to the eggs. Bluegill and other fish are the largest threats to the eggs of a bass which is why they are much more aggressive when it comes to bait or predator fish colors during the spawn. White although not really a natural color does mimic a bait fish.

I tie a variety of crawfish patterns and sizes. I've noticed that the smaller (size 8) will get bites way more often that the bigger (size 4). I think it has to do with fish knowing that a larger crawfish has a thicker shell and more capable claws. Also, there's a larger supply of smaller forage. "Match the hatch".

Bass eat crawfish, that is no lie. Smallmouth more so as craws are hard, rocky bottom type of crustaceans. Largemouth really only prefer that hard rocky bottom during spawn and in a place of excess forage. However, they are not about to tangle with a full grown, adult size craw as used in the video. A bass on a bed is not interested in eating. Any time they strike a lure or predator is to scare or drive off said predator. If you take the time, when bed fishing, when a bass picks up your bait, he either just bumps it with his nose or if he actually picks it up he will just take it away from the bed and then spit it out.
@rcmaniac8557

Smallmouth eat more crawfish than largemouth (crawfish don't usually live in lakes) and the reason it was still alive is because they pretty much vacuum the food in their mouth and just run with it

+Armedlegally You can fish under private docks if you're in a boat within public waterways. You can't exactly walk across everybody's land and sit on their dock to fish near it, but if you're in a boat most any fishing spot is fair game. That being said, I wouldn't sit next to somebody's private dock if they were out there doing something on it. Not a good way to make friends.

Sweet video! The reason they weren't eating the craws is because when they spawn they only have one thing on their mind. Only reason it's kind of easy to catch them on artificials is because you're able to flip in on them repeatedly and piss them off until they strike

I was fishing for large mouth bass once and I hooked up to a nice 6 Lb bass. When I got it in I realized I hooked it in the Gills and it was bleeding really bad. The fish was in the slot limit so I decided, instead of have it probably die in the lake if I released it, to cook it up and eat it. When I was cleaning the fish I cut open the stomach to see what it has been eating (I do this with every fish I eat so I can learn what they are biting on) I found 2 good sized crawfish curled up in its stomach! It was crazy to see and its been the only time I've ever seen it! I just wanted to share this story because I thought it was really cool, and it fits the subject of this video really well!

Here are my thoughts on this video: I can see that you put a lot of work in making it and I respect your work as a fellow KZbinr. When it comes to educational and conservation purposes, I think this video is a big negative. If you ask me why, there are many reasons. 1. the Crawfish that you use in the video -- is it native to that body of water? if not, you are risking the introduction of an invasive organism. Here in the Northeast, we have problems with Zebra Mussels and Rusty Crayfish, etc. It brings forth plenty of environmental damages. Even if it was native, subscribers may think that it is absolutely fine to dump crayfish in their local turfs too, which can result in big consequences. so, educationally speaking, not good. 2. minimizing fish fitness during spawning season. Laws are different from state to state, and here in PA and NJ, it is illegal to target or mess with spawning Bass. the main reason for that is for the fish to do their business and being forth future generations of fish for future generations of anglers. Even if in your state it is legal to target bedding Bass, I just will never be able to understand why Bass anglers would do that. one would think that they want them to reproduce nicely, since they love the Species. and yet, lots of Bass anglers mess with them during their Spawning season, when they are most vulnerable. catching them and toying with them results in loss of energy and trauma, which are two factors that you definitely do not want during the spawning season. after all, those fish need all the strength they can muster to fend off Bluegill and other organisms that can eat their eggs. anyways...this is just my opinion on this matter -- from an educational and conservation perspective. tight lines!

+Extreme Philly Fishing Just wanted to point out man, that studies have shown that fishing for spawning bass does not really effect bass populations. I wrote a paper on this. I don't particularly enjoy the concept of tournament anglers taking bass off their beds and releasing them usually miles away from it after the tournament, but after doing research i found out that it does not really matter. To maintain a healthy population within a body of water, a fish's sole purpose is to replace itself and its mate. That is two bass. As you know, bass reproduce many, many times through out their life, so in a healthy environment they are most likely going to contribute to more than just two successful offspring. So, they could actually pretty much have every spawn fail throughout the course of their life, and if they have two offspring survive, then they did their job. I had mixed feelings about spawning bass, but in doing research for a paper i wrote for one of my classes, I discovered that it really does not matter much. As long as ethical fishing practices such as the handling of fish and catch and release are practiced, everything should be fine. I have a passion for fly fishing just as big as my passion for bass fishing, and I can tell you (and I would assume you know as well) that bass are extremely hardy and durable fish, especially when compared to trout. They are survivors and grinders. They are definitely much less susceptible to declining populations when compared to a population of trout in a stream. I encourage everyone to do some research on the topic of fishing for spawning bass. I was blown away at some of the things I learned. Tight Lines!

I don't think it scares the bass at all however I do think it changes the situation for bass. This is one of the best examples I've ever seen of how bass are truly opportunists. The size matters too with Crayfish (Crawfish). The smaller ones the Bass will eat more readily than big ones. Eating a big Craw is not going to be their ideal meal size unless very hungry and with an empty belly. I only use Crayfish that are a certain size and no bigger (2 inches maybe). Then they will more readily commit to them, if smaller. Rarely do I cut open a Bass and it's got a large crayfish in it's belly. More like a couple of minnows and the earthworms they rob us of, lol and of course "small" crayfish. I had it proven to me, by an expert Angler too, who loves Bass fishing. He would slay Bass on smaller crayfish. I liked how you caught him bumping it. It explains a lot and once again, great footage.

I've caught rainbows on berkley crawfish before, weird. I used to fish the main Umpqua (Oregon) for small mouth in early summer, we always used worms or rubber worms but most of the bass we took home had craw fish in their bellies.

U aren't supposed to fish during spawn season because the bass need to protect the eggs from intruders like sunfish that actually eat their eggs

Ive never fished with live crayfish but yeah, I agree with others on here, your footage definitely gave something to keep in mind especially when you know there is fish in the area but cant get them to bit. And it's truly frustrating when you can feel them bumping the jig or what ever but not biting it. Good job man.

Watching this after several podcasts on crawfish behavior and bass forage. The main thing I took from them was that some bass will stay away from bigger crawfish. Especially during the spawn. It seems like a small (2 to 3 inches) crawfish would be better.

I think those bass might not be used to eating crawfish that big.
@Bowfella
@Bowfella 8 жыл бұрын
They eat shad half their size so any size crawfish shouldn't be an issue. Simply because crawfish don't live in weedy areas you typically find largemouth. Smallmouth on the other hand hunt in clear water with rocky bottoms or on sandbars, where crawfish typically are and it's practically their staple besides goby.

***** Then why didn't they eat it? Yet they won't hesitate to eat a smaller soft plastic craw. I'm not saying they can't eat crawfish that big because I know they can. I just think maybe they prefer smaller ones if they have the choice. Easier prey.
@fishingfanatic3753
@fishingfanatic3753 8 жыл бұрын
it's simply because he's just not interested in eating when protecting his nest. Crayfish are not a threat. That's why it will strike a soft plastic swimbait, it's a reaction bite because it see's it as a threat to his nest. If this was post spawn, everything should get out of his way because they put the feedbag on after spawning period!

Fishing Fanatic If you watch the video though you see both of the bass moving in to engage but when the crawfish flares his claws they both quickly back off. They were clearly intimidated by that crawfish. Like I said I know those bass would have no problem eating that big craw but I think they would prefer easier prey.

I used a white jig/crawdad plastic on a bass bed today and targeted the defending male bass on the bed... The male bass showed the exact same characteristics as your video footage. After 2 knocks, the BIGGER female rushed over and ate the lure (the jig with the crawdad creature w/claws up in offense). Nice video.

Very cool video! A thing to keep in mind though is that all bass and other fish will usually be a bit different in other bodies of water. In this one pond I fish at the bass will rarely even look at any crawfish or creature type baits, but in another those would be the best baits to use.

The reason pre-spawn is such a good fishing time is because they fatten up in preparation. During the spawn, they eat far less. As a food source, the crawfish is less attractive on an active bed, unless they happen to be really hungry. Lizards and mud-puppies, on the other hand, eat roe. They are a direct threat to the spawn and can get protective attacks during the spawn.

This confirms the Berkley study. The craws with zero claws get the most strikes. I rig a tube exactly backward to mimic same I put foam deep inside to cause it to always stay nose up and hook up. Thus I present the closest thing to an alert craw with no arms/claws.

Grub o thats a natural behavior for bass, they are known for protecting their beds by spinning in circles and checking all sides, bluegill looooove bass eggs. Usually males protect the beds, its interesting to see the female doing it.

Amazing footage. He was telling her dont eat it....so one fish is maybe looking out for another fish. Hmm he was competing or he would have ate it. Was it he didnt want the female to possibly get injured. Which would jeopardize the survival of the eggs? Or did he see the line or the hook and knew it was a set up? I think it's the first one. But this has showed me that fish maybe more intelligent than we think. Is this a display of caring? Why would he care if she ate it is the question. He had mouth open and hit her what twice with his tail to push her away. Fascinating.
