Tennis racquet zapper absolutely works. I bought a two-pack from Amazon and use one any time I get see a flying bug that has landed on something in my place (usually the bathroom mirror). House flies seem to be too fast for it, or I just haven’t found an effective way to swat them. Bugs that don’t react super quick, though, it works really well. Most bugs other than house flies you can put the racquet right over top of them when they have landed on something and they will take off to fly away and zap themselves by flying right into the racquet. For any other bugs where the racquet does not work well, get a Bug-A-Salt.

You don't really want a bug zapper if you're looking to take care of mosquitoes, you want a lure trap. The good ones have the little attractant stink packet, and a UV light that hits a catalyst to create CO2, and a fan to pull the bugs into the trap and keep them there. It’s been on many car trips from home to camp over those years, it’s been dropped numerous times, and has had countless heads smacked off the thing and still works. The thing that worked best for me, in terms of mosquito control, was a bucket of water sheltered by a little roof... and all of the surfaces on the inside were coated with DDT. Mosquitoes are attracted by the water, land on the shaded area under the roof, and die. Then they fall in the bucket. Never noticed any larvae. Not sure whether the DDT killed them or the mosquitoes never got to lay eggs. Either way, at the end of mosquito season, there was a lot of bug sludge in the water. DDT isn't easy to get (I had to make it) but I used less than a gram, in total. Next time, I may put a catch-screen over the water to see how many of what kind of insects get caught in it.

I bought one recently that comes with a "photocatalyst lamp" which is actually far more effective than any of the others I've tested. We had so many bugs I’d have to go out every day and clean the bug zapper with compressed air. Otherwise, it wouldn’t kill anything. It would be a rain of gnats, mosquitos, and moths. Made no difference to our bug ecosystem, they’d all be back the next night. Of course, we lived on the Bayou. I mostly just wanted to clear the ones around on the front porch which was 175 feet from the bayou as opposed to the back which was just 100 feet. My thing was we couldn’t use the front door because all of the bugs would collect around it. My solution besides the bug zapper was to use a fan with a remote outlet to blow the bugs away before opening the door. That did pretty well and is the method we use for our current home
@Nighterlev4 ай бұрын
Use both, bug zappers will reduce the surrounding population. Mosquitos are hard to get because they're attracted by carbon dioxide, and specific bug catchers exist for mosquitos.

It might be useful to have things outside your front door that deter the bug, there are certain scents that they hate, such as peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, vinegar. Some people put certain plants around and there are many things sold that are infused with the scents and you can hang them up, or you can but the essential oils and soak cotton balls with them. Maybe it will help I’m not sure.

Greyhounds are very nervous dogs and every time it would zap a bug and they were on the patio they made a mad dash for the doggie door. I now have a basset hound and I don't know how he would feel about it however my biggest concern is getting flies in the house and I found on Amazon a bug zapper shaped like a tennis racket that you charge and I have found it to be very effective. it sizzles and pops every time I get one (and I rarely miss). Doesn't bother the basset hound either.

Tyler, they make specialized traps for mosquitos. They are based on the emissions of carbon dioxide (which is what we emit and why mosquitoes land on us)--not light. So you have the wrong machines to kill mosquitos. Mosquitos are attracted to UV light but not as much as carbon dioxide.

I have the solar style zapper except it's just electric and the lightbulb style I use for in the house. I have never killed a single bug with lightbulb in well over a year. The grid one zapped it's first bug in like one second . Recently it's been zapping some nasty wasps which take a lot to kill, sounds kind of crazy, so I'm pretty happy with it.
@countryfriedgamer15o4 ай бұрын
Leave it to Tyler to make a video of bugs getting zapped. I actually had that light bulb zapper and I didn't think it was that bad. Quite a few bugs got in it and died until it just quit working all together. I don't recall it costing very much, maybe a little higher than a pack of light bulbs. I mean for a little more than a pack of light bulbs you get one light bulb that also kills bugs doesn't seem that bad of a deal to me. I think the idea is good especially if you have a porch light like we do that's right outside the door. You try to open the door and bugs try to fly into your house. By it killing them right by the door not as many try to fly inside. It's certainly not the greatest by any means but can you really expect much from something that goes in a light socket. I was surprised given it's limitations how many bugs it was able to catch. It's obviously not adequate to be a main bug deterrent but I think it's a good supplemental deterrent.
@The_Slavstralian4 ай бұрын
That zapper with the fan is nuts. the way the zapper works is it has 2 grates one positive and one negative, as the bugs bridge that gap it gets zapped. The one with the fan didnt look like it had 2 separate spirals of wire. it looked more like 1 and maybe it just gets really hot so the bug gets fried rather than zapped which would also explain the melted bits.

Something I found years ago which was interesting, was that the early white LED's repelled insects. While out camping, I'd turn on a light, and bugs would head straight for it. Then as they approached, I would shine my LED flashlight at them, and they would fly away as fast as they could. It doesn't work with more modern white LED lights, however. However, what I'm thinking about the light bulb bug zapper is that it uses the old style LED's that repel insects.
