As an American I have heard about how much Norwegians love pizza. Today I am very excited to see some classic Norwegian commercials about the Grandiosa Pizza. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

Yeah, in retrospect it is kind of staggering to see how many Grandiosa products that have been launched with great campaigns and then quickly forgotten. Luckily it seems like pepperoni is here to stay, and uten paprika is here to come and go repeatedly.

Orkla's factory in Stranda, Sunnmøre, has produced Pizza Grandiosa since 1980. The factory, which was first owned by Nora and then became part of Stabburet, has been part of the Orkla group since 1986. Big One was launched in 1991 under the Stabburet brand . Both brands are today owned by the Norwegian group Orkla.

The Grandiosa commercials were earworms. The "Full Pakke" song, even put this in their lyrics. These are translations of a few of the lines. (You can look up the full lyrics, at least in Norwegian) "No other drug matters" "We are in lockstep" "Everyone has been brainwashed"

I think Norwegian commercials in general have a higher standard. Partly because of the annual TV commercial awards show. "Gullfisken" (the gold fish), (The name possibly plays on the fish in the TV aquarium used between programs in childhood of broadcasting)

The original Grandiosa pizza comes with paprika (Bell pepper) as topping. It's a thing in norway that a lot of people remove the paprika from the Grandiosa, so from time to time they sell the "limited edition" grandiosa without paprika. Helmax or Helmaks is a slang in Norway. It basically means "sweet" or "great". The topping "Skinke" is ham. "Lørdagspizza" means "Saturday Pizza" and "Full pakke" means "Full package", "Pizza snurrer" is Pizza rolls, but like cinnoman rolls. It's just funny naming on the pizzas. (Oh and by the way, kebab pizza is fucking delicous)

Fun fact about the Grandiosa Pizza song, Lørdagspizza, it blew up that year, and you'd hear people play it in their homes, cars and even on the beach. Was kind of a summer-vibe song, which to me was hilarious. Most of the people my age (30-35) knows the lyrics to this day (I say as i sang along to this one in your video). Love watching your videos AND also stream them for American friends trough discord during game breaks. They find them funny and interesting as well!

Ah yes. The infamous Grandiosa commercials... A frozen pizza anyone could make in 13min at 225°C on an oven grate placed in the middle of an oven. Very popular for both vorspiel and nachspiel, especially in places where order-in pizza wasn't a thing. Fond memories of coming home from a long day in the slopes, kicking off alpine boots, the smell of Grandiosa all over the cabin, popping an ice cold beer. Good times! Really catchy songs too, with snappy, Norwegian lyrics everyone was singing along to. Songs played at parties, sometimes played when you were out partying to get that cheesy factor all the way up. How I love my fellow Norwegians for this... 0 f's given, everyone enjoying themselves and having a good time. Cheers!

My father was the editor of the Norwegian trade magazine for grocers at the time Grandiosa started with the songs. The first one they did was the first one you heard, and it was unheard of at the time. The whole song wouldn't generally play, they'd do short clips from the music video, but the songs, both "Full Pakke" and "Respekt for Grandiosa" did fairly well in the charts, with Respekt for Grandiosa topping the Norwegian charts for for eight weeks, and being downloaded as a ringtone 700 000 times, one million downloads online and 200 000 foreign downloads. Mind you, this was in 2006, so these were pretty decent stats at the time. Norway also has a competition called "Gullfisken", which is basically the Academy Awards or Grammys for advertisers. It means that advertisers sometimes actually make an effort, and I quite appreciate that. The princess one wasn't a real princess, don't worry. Nor was it an ad for pizza. That ad was for a phone provider 😅

«Full package» («full pakke») is slang for saying something is great and has it all!!! We love commercials here, as we for a long long time didn’t have commercials on TV, only at the Music theaters. Everybody went early so they could watch the commercials and the companies would use quite a lot of money on the commercials. When we got more commercial TV channels, I guess it just moved over there. There’s even a TV Gala every years where they give out awards, like the Oscars, for Commercials. And being funny is a big plus to get people’s attention!

Some of these pizza commercials are really old. Jenny Skavlan the pretty girl in the " Grandiosa full pakke" jingle became famous in Norway because she did that commercial and she is now an actress and she also sew from using old clothes and changes them, I think that full pakke commercial is about 16-17 years as my cousin's son used to go around and sing it when he was around 1-2 years old and we all laughed as it was so funny, he will be 18 next month. Some of the other commercials are also old and those pizza styles are no longer available, I think nowadays there is like one vegetarian friendly pizza and 40 with ham, bacon and pepperoni and beef in different combinations. None of the companies have ever made a proper vegetarian pizza, Grandiosa tried with some pizza a few years back with vegetables on it but it didn't taste good as it was strange vegetables to put on a pizza 🍕. As a vegetarian I would like to have a pizza with tomato slices, paprika, mushrooms and onion and just normal Norvegia cheese, not strange things like artichokes and dried tomatoes and aubergine, I don't like it. Just because I'm a vegetarian doesn't mean I want to have every weird tasting vegetable on my pizza, I just don't like meat, nothing stranger than that. The best would be if they did a classic Norwegian style pizza with vegetarian mince on it, that's what was a normal pizza when I grew up in the 80's (minced meat, onion, sliced tomatoes and Norvegia cheese slices on top, some people used mushrooms just for the kids to pick them out, no one used paprika I think, but some people would put pineapple 🍍 on the pizza, usually those that are old people now as they thought it became a Hawaiian pizza the second they put a pineapple on it. A lot of families started to eat pizza in the 70's and the Grandiosa came up with their frozen pizza, now called classic, was introduced February 11. 1980, but people usually made their own pizza more than they ate frozen pizza, and I remember having Grandiosa pizza in some birthday party as a kid instead of the hot dogs as one girl in my class didn't like hot dogs so I convinced my mother that I should serve Grandiosa instead. )

Lørdagspizza (Saturday Pizza) was a commercial hit back in 2006, but it got discontinued too soon The full theme song was well over 3 minutes in duration As for "Full Pakke", it came out a year after Lørdagspizza, and like that one, it too got discontinued way too soon. Although, it did got re-introduced not that long ago, but it was only sold in the Rema 1000 stores. Grandiosa is also sold in Sweden, but in a strange fashion, Swedish Grandiosa is the same as our Big One

The company that makes Grandiosa use a lot of humor to be noticed, because they know that frozen pizza isn't particularly exotic, and it has a reputation for being low quality. They also know that the customers are aware of that, so they're leaning into it, and are basically poking fun at themselves. Some of the people in their commercials are actually well known actors/celebrities in Norway, while others are people that work in their factory. The tunes in these commercials were initially made by a Norwegian musician called Lars Kilevold, and it was an instant success. Kilevold is best known for a song called "Livet er for kjipt", which basically means "life sucks/it's just too much" (I can't think of a translation that covers both the meaning behind it, as well as the actual words). The character in the song is basically explaining that he is a loser with low self esteem, has no prospects in life, he wishes that he would just die, and he drinks to cope. The fact that this guy has also written the most upbeat Grandiosa songs is just hilarious, and it fits the theme of making a huge, over the top production out of something that is really drab, and boring.

7:24 The funny thing about you saying that you don't really watch the commercials, is that you have a lot more commercial breaks in America 😅 One thing that used to be really annoying about watching TV shows, was that there would be multiple times during each episode that the show faded out and then faded back in instantly because USA had much more frequent commercial breaks. If I was watching an episode of for instance Mythbusters, then 5-6 times per episode a short jingle would suddenly play and they would start recapping everything that happened 15 seconds ago, because Americans went to commercials constantly.. While I think we only had 1 or maximum 2 breaks in a 30-45 min episode in Norway.

The Lørdagspizza ad is long because it is built from a full proper hit song. It is on Spotify and such. And it is still a banger that I sometimes hear people put on at parties. Norwegian commercials tends to be in arcs and in many different time variations. Sometimes they just continue from earlier ads (like you saw in Jarlsberg, "cheese is cheese"). There was definitely broadcasted 30 second ad slots of Lørdagspizza as well.

8:41 Paprika means bell peppers, you could see a bell papper on the front of one pizza, behind a «forbidden» traffic sign (not used in the US, I believe, but it looks like this: 🚫. Behind the crossing line is what is forbidden, here it was a bell pepper (on the pizza for the 750,000 of Norwegians that picks the bell pepper pieces off!). I HATE the bell pappers on the original Grandiosa. And it is all over!!! Eeeeeew!!! OMG, a funny detail in the commercial is the focussed on «judge» for the «auditions» in the commercial, actually used to be a music executive here and also a judge on Idol in Norway for years, Tor Milde. He was very loved but also got a lot of criticism, since he was a bit like Norway’s Simon Cowell, very straight forward, never held anything back. He passed away 10 years ago though, RIP Tor Milde! ❤❤❤

Paprika is not a spice only in Norway, so many do not like warm redbell peppers. We call bellpeppers paprika. The whole thing with Grandiosa its a movement, many people eat grandiose even for Christmas dinner, its a huge thing over here. Yes Pizza is often served on Saturdays when you hang out with family and or friends. American style pizza is referring to thicker crust, as Italian Pizza is thinner crust. So its not more difficult than that :) Big one is another type pizza and not the same ad Gransiosa. Helmax, means the top og the tops remember that Nirwegian words cannot always be directly translated into Ebglish as it has a different meaning often. Example Ekte means real and authentic, but in regards to ekteskap, ektemann, it doesn't mean a real wardrobe or a real man, it is referring to legally binding ekte and it comes from Old Gernman meaning marriage and husband. Skinke = ham Pizzs snurr is a pizza roll and very similar in taste like this. Kebabpizza is just kebab flavoured topping. Just like taco pizza would be with taco flavor and meatball pizza will have meatballs etc - This is cute though,.it comes in parts, Ive never seen this one, I have seen another kampanje.com/markedsforing/2019/02/grandiosa-klar-med-ny-reklamefilm/

"Paprika" is the norwegian term for "Red Bell Peppers". "Paprika" spice is made of crushed dried red bell peppers and variations may have added dried chili peppers. "Paprika" spice can also be smoked, and is then similar to chipotle, but probably with less capsaicin. When norwegians say "Paprika" they mean bell peppers, and when we talk about paprika spice, we call it paprika pulver (bell pepper powder).
@MaxQ10001
@MaxQ10001 Ай бұрын
Paprika = bell pepper. I think you call it paprika when it’s dried and made into a powder. Bell pepper has nothing to do on pizza. However, when the test kitchen got the order to make pizza, because the big bosses had heard about this new dish having a success abroad, they had never heard about pizza. So they just started to experiment. The misunderstanding probably became from “pepperoni” which is the Italia word for bell pepper. And also for sausage with bell pepper. Big One and Grandiosa are the two main competitors - owned by the same company. Best trick from the marketing play book: give people two options. This was around 50 years ago.

I think Big One is Norwegian, but the reason they are mentioning America is because there is "American style pizza" (and there is "Italian style pizza"), and they sell American style pizza. American style pizza is when the dough thing is thick and airy, I think it also usually has more cheese, while Italian style pizza is when the dough part is thin (I think it's called thin crust in English), and there is usually less cheese, maybe only a few mozzarella slices.

I think the issue in the US is twofold. First, the network environment is harsh, unlike in Norway, where networks historically haven’t been as strict. Second, American national commercials are often created by large corporations with expensive PR teams focused on including everyone and avoiding offense. As a result, US commercials tend to feel much more bland and boring. In contrast, especially in early 2000s Norway, companies were smaller and often used smaller studios to produce commercials, allowing for more creative freedom. This often led to Norwegian commercials being quirky, funny, and original.

The american style is the thick crust style that originated in USA after Italian immigrants brought pizza to the states. So outside the USA, it makes more sense to say Italian Style or American Style, while in USA you have just gotten used to saying Chicago or New York. Another fun fact is that ul until the late 90's and early 00's Brandiosea had no real competition in Norway and was basically the only frozen pizza, so they only had their cheese ham and paprika(red bell pepper) pizza outside of the rare variety. Then Big One came with their thick crust and multiple styles and Grandiosa started having to innovate theirs too.

"Helmax" is a Norwegian alternative to "Awesome" or "Fantastic" A literal translation would be "Full Max" or "Completely Max" or "Whole Max". (You could interperet is as "as max as it can be")

When I see these grandiosa commercials now, it hits me that it is strange that there is always so many people on them because I think most people eat grandiose when they are alone...

Big One and Grandiosa are both Norwegian brands. Grandiosa was one of the first frozen pizza's locally, and it still is popular because the flavour is half decent. Big One has way to thick and dry base, and never was to my taste. Traditional Norwegian home made pizza from the 1970s was a deep dish pie with minced meat and tomato sauce topped with grated cheese and baked in an oven. From what I've seen it is more like your Chicago style pizza than Italian pizza or New York style. Pizza was usually made from fresh ingredients, and mostly on Saturdays or Fridays. After the influx of frozen pizza in the 1980s, some people eat pizza for dinner several days a week.

9:40 here they made fun of the "Idol" show, which never did a "World Idol" after our beloved plumber won it (Kurt Nilsen, that's a thing to check out!). World Idol was made to show the world the US idol winner (sorry I honestly can't even remember the US idol, Carey maybe?), and then some rather ugly dude plumber from Norway won it hands down with his amazing voice (even the famously harsh Simon Cowell said "if this was a radio show you'd walk it" (as in it would not even be a race to the finish)).

Paprika means sliced "Bell Pepper". Norwegian commercials are shown much rarer during a broadcast than in the US. So the commercials need to be more impactful. I suppose. As a Norwegian i can tolerate Norwegian commercials at least.

Norwegians pizza commercials are trying to sell how every bite is a "party" of it's own and that eating and enjoying a pizza is somehow unifying. It's ofc trying to be as silly and memorable as it can be so the brand and different types will stick to you. Keep in mind these commercials ain't the recular thing. Thise are handpicked. They are one out of many who actually makes people laugh and gets judged as a funny and good commercial. Skinke = ham Salami = close to a pepperoni Paprika = i believe it's what you would call bell pepper? 🤔 in Norway I would say it's somewhat controversial as well as regular. Either you like it or you don't, and the groups are more or less divided just as people are with pinapple on pizza.
