Mitch is a vocal anomaly. He paid dearly for his unique voice as a child growing up in Texas. Kids can be cruel, as we know. But Scott and Kirstie have always had his back, and there's a kind of divine justice watching him become so successful on the wings of that stellar voice. Kudos to him for not rejecting the thing that caused him so much pain and rejection, but for walking directly into it and making it his source of power. Real life lessons there...💖💖💖

It was in high school that he was bullied for his voice, after all the other boy's voices had changed. And I've always suspected that his voice was just an excuse. He came out of the closet in high school, so I think they were bullying him for being gay and making the same mistake about vocal range being associated with sexual orientation that the producers did on _The Sing-Off._ I *don't* think it had anything to do with Texas. As for whether it would happen today, well, kids (including teenagers) do have a tendency to look for an underdog they can bully. I suspect that this will never change. What *may* have changed are perceptions about gay people, and perceptions about counter tenors (and if that one has changed we have Mitch Grassi to thank for it). But there's still a heck of a lot of homophobia in the world, and specifically in the U.S.. And the thing that most impresses me about Mitch isn't his voice (impressive though it is); it's the fact that I've never once heard him gloat. If it were me I'd probably have had replicas made of my Grammys to send to all the people who'd bullied me.

@@margretrosenberg420 He just seems so genuinely humble about his talent, and as if it doesn't even register with him why people are so awed by his talent.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
@@kristinewalberg2938 I wouldn't go *quite* that far. Have you seen their 12th performance on _The Sing-Off?_ Either way you answer that, watch it again, with the following pieces of information: Scott had a cold and his voice was going. They'd had a disastrous, off-tune dress rehearsal. All of them were convinced that this performance was going to be so bad that they'd lose that day; there was only one thing they could pull out of it, and that was Mitch's long-delayed solo. So watch that video, and look at Mitch's face at the beginning of the performance. *Mitch* wasn't worried about losing _The Sing-Off,_ or at least that wasn't his primary emotion. Mitch was wearing this secretive grin that said "I know something you don't, and boy is it a doozy!" and he kept that grin throughout (though it obviously grew less secretive). Either Mitch thought they'd somehow pull the whole thing off, horse's hooves, choo-choo trains, surprise solo, and wall of sound at the end, all without a hitch; or Mitch thought his solo on its own would be enough to win; or Mitch was just anticipating the look on the judges' faces when he soloed. Now, it may well be the first; he certainly had cause to trust the entire band to do their best work under pressure, but he was well aware that *he* was the big surprise the band had in store in this performance and he was relishing it. He did start looking kind of shy when Shawn started talking about his performance, but that grin never left his face. I think Mitch *is* humble, in the sense that he accepts his talent as something he was born with, and not of his own doing. But I don't think he could make proper use of his talent without understanding it in detail. And I think he tries to be kind to people who envy his talent, without thinking of them (us) as somehow lesser people. There's a saying I ran into several years ago that I really like: Always remember that you are totally unique. Just like everybody else. Mitch is good at singing. (Understatement, but true.) I'm good at math. (Likewise.) There's something you're good at; you would know what that is better than I. When they say "It takes all kinds to make a world" they aren't just talking about personality types - it takes all of our varied talents - not one of us can go it alone, but also each of us is needed, is *important.* And I think Mitch knows that and gives respect where it is due, and it is due to everyone.

Now you know why we were thinking and hoping for a 4th Grammy for this outstanding rendition of The Prayer. Funnily enough, they did get a nomination...for the whole album. Fingers crossed they win!! This arrangement and performance is astounding...there just no other word for what they did. BTW...Scott took Italian lessons in order to do his operatic portion of the song. He and the group have done this with other songs...French lessons for Papaoutai (Stromae cover) and Japanese for Perfume, Korean for Gangnam Style, so it's not unusual for them to excel at singing in another language. Yes...somehow Mitch manages to make singing look completely effortless, but in reality, it's very carefully thought out use of all the tools at his disposal. They all do that. Looking forward to the 90's Dance Medley!!

There is a running joke (?) that the best Pentatonix song or video is the one you just saw. I think it also has something to do with every song they do is different. Some groups have their sound and after a while their songs sound the same. With Pentatonix you recognize the sound of their voices but nearly every song is a different vocal style and composition. They are just a box of chocolates. The album this song came from was just nominated for a Grammy. We were hoping for this song in particular would be nominated but the whole album was. Home Free (fans known as Home Fries) trend toward country (but sing everything--including opera) and kill everything they do. Voice Play is very theatrical and do a lot of character voices and go all out with costumes, make-up, etc. and that just adds to the superb music. Voctave is totally different--they have 11 members and create chords and harmonies that are truly out of this world (you'll think you're hearing angels sing) and they trend toward Disney stuff (and Disney has created some great music). Stunning....while bringing the much needed message of The Prayer. Welcome to our world - we are Pentaholics. Looking forward to more PTX reactions! The PTX album with this song just got nominated for a Grammy!!!

Mitch sings as a counter-tenor, which is the highest male voice range. He and Kirstie make a good vocal pairing, just as Scott and Matt make a good pairing. For the record, the "original language" for this song was English, Italian came second. It was originally written by Carole Bayer Sager and others for an animated movie called "A Quest For Camelot" where Celine Dion was the singing voice of one of the characters. Celine and Andrea Bocelli did a duet of it that became very popular. For them, the words were changed, because in the movie it was a "mother's prayer" ... Things like "Help HER find her way" "Let HER be safe" - the mother praying that her daughter would be safe while seeking help. The popular duet became "Let US find OUR way" and "Let US be safe" etc.

They really are absolutely incredible. I try to find the right words to describe them and none of them seem good enough? Thank you for another amazing reaction! T ❤️

Pentaholics will tell you their favorite song is the one they are currently listening to. I can say not all their songs are my favorite, but I always appreciate their talent. It does seem like they always get better and better.

It will come as no surprise to you that just a few days ago Ptx made an announcement that they have been nominated for a Grammy for this entire album!!!! (Evergreen) I am so thrilled for them!! Yes, magic is a good explanation for them. Also they are aliens. They are unicorns. Pick one! Haha! Scott is singing in Italian here. You should react to their cover of the French song "Papaoutai"... Yep! Scott takes the lead & sings the whole thing in French!! The MV is really creative too!! Also, it is one of their collabs with violin player & dancer Lindsey Stirling, who is a huge star in her own right. (There are 3 collabs with her in total & they are all amazing!!! One of them is in on the aforementioned newly Grammy-nominated Evergreen album!!) Ptx also does a song in Japanese and one partly in Spanish. They will be blowing your mind over & over with what they can do. I am so happy to be on this journey of discovery with you!!! Thank you for reacting to my babies!!! (Yes, I claim them as my children bcoz I love them as if they are mine!! I would adopt every one of them in a heartbeat!!) Looking forward to seeing 90s Dance Medley just wowing you! Just you wait!! It is epic!!! XO

I love Papaoutai! And it's too underappreciated. If you do that - and I hope you will - make sure you watch the original by Strome (try the one with subtitles so you can get the translation of the French), then watch the way PTX transforms a song that was incredible in the first place.

What does "MV" mean? I've heard it a couple of times but can't figure it out from context.

And yup! Scott has a very interesting ability to be able to do foreign languages really well, despite not actually knowing the language. He does it here with Italian, and a while ago he did it with French when they covered a song called "Papaoutai" by Belgian musician Stromae. He's just so good at pronouncing the words right. (Not as perfectly as a native speaker, of course, but soooo good otherwise.)

😂😂😂 Oh man, you had me rolling the whole time! I’m literally crying from laughing so hard. I love love love when reactors are just as mindblown and flabbergasted by this song as I was the first time I heard it.

In my book he is the most talented and is #1, once you look at the fact that he plays the cello & beatboxes at the same time, and his solo music is beautiful - he has an amazing voice!!! He also plays the saxophone & keyboards... He is a beautiful human being on top of all that!!!

Hi ! Welcome to the Pentaholic family! Your reactions are great and your overall positive vibe is infectious.. Thank You 😁 I second the comment that you should watch the original video of "Gold" (by Kiiara) before watching PTX video... It's raw unbelievable..live... talent!! Also, among the various languages they sing in, add Rap to the list... check out: "Can't hold us" (by Macklemore) & "Problem" (Ariana Grande) .. Another fun original is " Sing " and ALL of the mashups and medley songs are fantastic (my favs: "La La Latch" and "New Rules x Are you that Somebody" ) I'm looking forward to all of your Pentatonix reactions!! Have a wonderful weekend from Arizona 🏜️

Someone may already have suggested this but just in case they haven't....I would love to see you react to PTX's Sing Off performances. These videos show them gaining confidence as they go from a thrown-together-last-minute group to winning the top prize. Lots of fun. Look for the videos that include the judges comments. In my opinion, those are best.

Just a new note to this incredible song... PTX was just nominated for their 4th Grammy for the Evergreen album, which is where this song is from. I know fans were hoping this song in particular would be nominated, but the entire album is now in the mix for their next Grammy (Matt's first, so I really am "Praying" that they get it). Please react to the behind the scenes documentary that was created for the making of the Evergreen album. It's amazing to see how they work together to create this incredible music. Then, it's time to review the entire album to see just how worthy it is for that Grammy. Have fun! We'll be there every step of the way with you.

Mitch has a voice for the ages - yes, a bit trite - but his diction, his sound is just so good and we won't hear someone like him for a generation or more to come.

My husband and I just took my sister with us to PTX here in Memphis for their Christmas concert. We were not disappointed. I have limited mobilities as i get older, snd it was some effort for me to negotiate with my scooter. It was worth the effort. My special Christmas treat.

I thought this was a Grammy worthy performance . . . . but alas, it didn't happen. However, their entire album where this song is on, was nominated for a Grammy 2023. PROPS to them . . they are amazing and only getting better and better!
