I tested a brand new continuous glucose monitor from Dexcom. The Stelo biosensor has just launched in the US. Is Stelo a good alternative to Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre CGMs to monitor your blood sugar levels. Or is it even a better tool to monitor your glucose? Watch this video to find out.

Stelo Glucose Biosensor Safety Statements
Stelo is only available for purchase and use in the United States by people 18 years and older not on insulin.
FDA indication for use in the United States
The Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is an over-the-counter (OTC) integrated Continuous Glucose Monitor (iCGM) intended to continuously measure, record, analyze, and display glucose values in people 18 years and older not on insulin. The Stelo Glucose Biosensor System helps to detect normal (euglycemic) and low or high (dysglycemic) glucose levels. The Stelo Glucose Biosensor System may also help the user better understand how lifestyle and behavior modification, including diet and exercise, impact glucose excursion.
The user is not intended to take medical action based on the device output without consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.
Stelo Important Information
Consult your healthcare provider before making any medication adjustments based on your sensor readings and do not take any other medical action based on your sensor readings without consulting your healthcare provider. Do not use if you have problematic hypoglycemia. Failure to use Stelo and its components according to the instructions for use provided and to properly consider all indications, contraindications, warnings, and cautions in those instructions for use may result in you missing a severe hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) or hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) occurrence. If your sensor readings are not consistent with your symptoms, a blood glucose meter may be an option as needed and consult your healthcare provider. Seek medical advice and attention when appropriate, including before making any medication adjustments and/or for any medical emergency.

I won't use it, since I'm a T1D, but giving more people access to this technology can only lead to good things, I think. it will improve health outcomes for (pre-)diabetics. It will make the devices more commonplace, that's one less thing low key alienating us (for lack of a better word) from the nondiabetic population. The manufacturers get to produce more of and improve more on it because the market gets bigger, thus making it better and cheaper (hopefully). And who knows how many people will try it out for fitness or dieting reasons and then find out that they're actually (pre-)diabetic, before disaster strikes.

I really like it so far. I've been wearing mine for almost a week now. I just wish there was a way to display the data on my watch. I really like being able to be at lunch and check my watch really quickly to see how my blood sugar is doing. Otherwise it's not very convenient to get out the phone and check the Stelo app. I love that I can permanently turn off any alarms. I used the G6 and G7 and I didn't like being woken up for false lows since I'm not on insulin or hypoglycemic.

I'm disappointed they gutted features that are standard across most CGM, probably to protect their existing prescription products and the data sharing service they sell doctors here in the US. I think the FDA should have forced it to be feature matching to gain approval.

I don’t often comment but someone was critical of you mentioning A1c levels & suggested you needed to become an endocrinologist. To balance that out, I would like to say that a family member became diabetic & the diabetic educator at our doctor’s office knew of your channel and liked that we were watching it. In addition, A1c ranges are fairly standard across the literature that we are reading (bought several books) and none are written by actual endocrinologists. I find your channel very factual and you provide your data and back up what you say. You have given us information that has helped us to know what to ask about at our doctor’s office - so I am very appreciative of the work you do. I find it solid and balanced, well thought out.

Be aware of the general assumptions when evaluating your A1c. The value is an assessment based on assumptions of the generel lifespan of a blood cell and the general ability of hemoglobin binding to glucose, hence not the lifespan of your blood cells or the ability of your hemoglobin to bind glucose. Likewise large spikes will not be detected as it is an average.

The sensor is proportionately 1/15 more expensive. And there is a FreeStyle Libre Select Sensor announced (coming soon) for type 2 diabetes patients on their website. Grüße aus Deutschland.

First time user of a CGM. Ordered and delivered next day. Amazon is doing the delivery. I did SPUs (Soleus Push Ups) between readings just after eating for a half hour to see what effect SPUs had on my glucose. Went from 120 mg/dl to 105 mg/dl. It was an interesting experiment. And I verified the readings twice with my Keto Mojo and the readings were very close or exactly the same for one of the two readings. So nice not to have to do finger pricks.

I have a similar trick. If my readings are 140 or 150 and still rising, I do squats, ... till exhaustion. Takes a couple of minutes. Don't need to go outside. I've had it go up to 160, and was able to knock it down 60 points. But eventually it goes back up, to some lower (saner) level, ... to work of the rest of the sugar. This depends on the carbohydrate load in the system. But able to avoid staying in the highs.

FYI you can also use Dexcom Clarity with this sensor for more data and export feature. Also when you are looking at the data points in portrait or Horizontal, if you hold your finger on any section of the dots you will see data appear for a specific time and BS level. You can scrub across the dots to see how your BS changed. Lastly, I would NEVER just trust a CGM alone and would ALWAYS occasionally do a finger prick to Double check the CGM data.

Stelo. It's for the DIY diet market and type 2's that hate sticking their fingers. Improving and training yourself to adapt to a new diet lifestyle. More ideal would be if they could get it down to $60 a month if you prepaid for a whole year. It's not a log term logger. It's not medical. It's advisory and not guaranteed. It probably also takes fewer readings in order to stretch the battery out to 15 days. I'm definitely getting it.

Nice review, look like a great option for peeps not on some form of medical subsidy. Simple and affordable is a HUGE plus. Well done Dexcom, that's a win for anyone with diabetes. The fact that this CGM's don't record or archive your events and readings is super annoying. They should automatically download the day before it is about to expire. That simple. The data is also NOT heavy and should be easily saved to a an excel file or the like or the frikken App. This really should be saving your info for a year, min.

I have been wearing Stelo for 10 days now. I thought your review of the app itself was spot on. It leaves a lot to be desired, but if that's what it takes to make it affordable, so be it. My Stelo readings are always about 10-20 points higher than the glucometer readings. Of course it's important to understand that Stelo and glucometers measure blood sugar in different ways (interstitial vs. capillary) That said, I found it just a little bit frustrating at first. Now I just say "meh". I see it's real value in teaching me patterns, and how to eat to avoid spikes. I am type 2 diabetic. I've had a few surprises, but mostly avoiding spikes is just good ole' plain common sense telling me that the bowl if ice cream I'm about to est is going to spike my BS. I did find value in "how long" the spike lasted. Don't really need to spend $90./mo to figure it out, but it's another tool in the arsenal. Most likely I will wear it for 6 mos, then decide I'be learned everything I can from it. Overall score: 7/10.

Day 8 of Stelo, not diabetic, but my step mother recently died from complications of diabetes. So, while this is not my biological tendency, we are all thinking of blood sugar and wanting to be healthier. I also have blood testing materials “inherited” from her. Findings: Stelo tends to read about 10 mg higher than a blood prick reading. That’s ok, since I want to learn about tendencies. I am a software developer, so I have downloaded all of the data I have collected via Apple health in a format that I can create my own program to crunch and visualize my data over time. You can’t do more that 24 hours via the Stelo app.

CGM and the like do not measure blood glucose levels (BGL) as stated here. The patch inserts sensors which measure the electric conductivity of glucose in the interstitial fluid, which is only, proportional to the BGL, not the actual BGL. Only fingerprick or glucometer measures the BGL at that one point in time. Both CGM and glucometer have their good and bad points.
@thebeatles9
@thebeatles9 7 күн бұрын
This is a very important distinction. My Stelo is 18-20 points HIGHER than my finger sticks, even first thing in the morning (no time lapse issues). The CGM readings are meant to be "degrees of measurements" rather than "absolute measurements". In other words, when I wake up to a 110 stelo reading, I know that my actual BLOOD glucose is 90. Stelo is measured in degrees, finger prick is the absolute measure
@luisv007
@luisv007 7 күн бұрын
@@thebeatles9 what are you talking about? The glucose concentration measures by CGM (whether prescribed by a doctor or over the counter) and glucometer measures the concentration of glucose in either mg/dl or mmol/L, but the difference is CGM is interstitial and finger prick is blood. Finger prick or glucometer measures are needed if your symptoms are different to what you CGM is reading. Scientifically, CGM cannot be used to measure effects of food because it doesn’t measure blood glucose levels. He states GI but GI levels are measured using blood glucose, not CGM readings.

I was pre-pre-diabetes, have a strong family history, my benefits would have covered a CGM, but my doctor wouldn't prescribe it. So frustrating. Today, I had an unexpected high after a what should have been a decent meal. I don't understand why we need a whole other system. That adds to the cost.

One thing not mentioned is the ability to export your readings to collect data over months and years like the G7 can. I wish the stelo allowed that. But it's a good time to remind everyone that there is a marketing strategy called "good enough" which Apple employs where you don't release every feature possible all at once, but instead keep things behind for future releases to not only entice new users, but send the signal that the product hasn't been abandoned.
@ExtaTer

The good enough strategy is simply to not cannibalize the sales of G7. If it was as good, people would simply get Stelo instead.

I'm a T2 and feel this is a move in the right direction. Whilst I can't get my readings under 100 ( I have 3 times high 90's), I can keep them under 140 by diet alone ( no medications). I have the dawn effect and that's where I get my worst readings or after working hard out in the Florida heat/humidity. My second reading is midpoint between my 2 meals a day and those are between 110 to 130. A 36 hour fast will get me down to 105/110. I thank God that I don't have hypo's and quite sorry for those that do have that problem. I look for the future to bring an implanted chip, same area applied monitor, that is programable to the patients medical requirements. I hope this happens and is an affordable option with Medicare and insurance coverages for it.

Ditto here. All my research suggests any values under 140 you don't need to worry about. A reading of 79 does not mean you will live 1 day longer than a reading of 135. No studies at all to suggest you will. Sounds like you are already doing low carb, and IF, and tha's all you need to worry about. More importantly, next time you get labs, insist to your provider that they include a fasting insulin level. If you are in the single digits, you are golden. May want to look up Dr. Ben Bikman on youtube. A brilliant Phd chemist who specializes in diabetic research. You will learn tons about controlling your BS, and will worry much less about your current situation. Dr. Jason Fung, the lo carb guru suggests we should be doing fasting weekly. I personally agree, but find it hard to do! Haha. Good luck fellow traveler.

I just completed a 14 day Stelo sensor. While using it I had a Fasting blood sugar taken at a lab and noted the reading in the Stelo at the time of the draw. Stelo was 23 numbers higher than the lab results. I couldn’t place it in the recommended area. How can the required area be the back of the arm when older women often have flabby arms? I’m normal weight but 70 years old so flabby arms like many. I put it on the front in the space between two muscles. I don’t plan on continual use but will try it again and use my abdomen.

I wonder if this is the same patch that is going out on the updated G7 sensors, and if this could possibly mean the G8 will finally achieve the 15 day wear time like we all hoped.

Thanks a lot for the review! The Stelo seems to be a product, which is good for the company (Dexcom) in order to make more money. If they would put people with diabetes first, they would have launched Dexcom 8, which lasts for 15 days. But this guy, Stelo, is not completely suitable for us diabetes folks, as the range is only from 70 to 250, not below, not over.

I wonder if, because it's not for insulin dependent people, the longer lasting is not so much from an improvement in the filament being able to accurately measure for longer, but more that there aren't the same requirements on such a device to maintain accuracy, so the drop in accuracy isn't as much of a problem. That and battery savings from not measuring so frequently.

So it reads every 15 minutes automatically, correct? Can I also read on demand, by touching my phone to the sensor? And last question: isn't 15 minutes too low of a frequency? Every 5 minutes would be more accurate or do you think it is not necessary? Context: I'm not diabetic, the intention is to use that to better understand and optimize my low-carb / keto diet. Thanks!
@TheVaryox
@TheVaryox 14 күн бұрын
For a diabetic I would think that 15 minutes might indeed be a bit too long of an interval. An alarm for low blood sugar might be delayed then. But for your purpose it should be fine. As I understand it, you want to learn how certain foods, activity, etc. impact your levels, you won't need super timely readings for that, since you get the data either way. Analysing the curves after the fact gives better clues than to follow it in real time anyway.

So I have the Stelo but the readings are high vs blood stick. I mean anywhere from 30mg/dl to 60. A question for the group as this is my first CGM. I barbell strength train and my arms have very little fat if I flex i can just grab a little bit of skin. Is that enough fat for the sensor to work? If not I do have some belly fat but the directions say not to place there.

Truth be known, the Stelo hardware is the same as the G7. Different color plastic means nothing. The difference is in the software. Example: limiting the range to 70-250 mg/dl. On the other hand, the Stelo tells us the G7 can be used for 15 days, not 10 as in the G7. Why would Dexccom not extend the G7 to 15 days? They would lose 1/3 of their sales, that's why. I apply my G7 sensor's overpatch by using my computer's camera. But the OEM overpatch is clear and is easily misapplied using the camera method. Colorful overpatches as seen in this video are probably better. Dexcom's business is in trouble. After a recent earnings report, their stock dropped close to 40%. Dexcom's management blamed it on an inexperienced sales force. The pundits think Abbot is taking market share. Overall, I like the G7. It has a tendency to lose bluetooth connection necessitating a wait for the data stream to re-establish. I am not a type 1 so it is not that critical.

@@onlythebest3311 You make a good point concerning sample interval. The competition, Freestyle Libre 3 has 1 minute sample interval and 15 day wear time. This is better than Dexcom G7. I think wear time has a natural limit due to sweat and other gunk. More efficient use of battery has got to be a goal of Dexcom for them to catch up.

No, the sensor has a flexible filament (like a thread) sticking out of the bottom of it that gets shoved into the very top layer of your skin by a tiny little tube in the applicator. When you peel the sensor off at the end of 15 days, the filament comes out attached to it. That's what you see at 4:07.
