Hey, I'm fourteen year's old. I vowed to buy only one typewriter. I bought an SM9, but now, after collecting porcelain (lily porcelain from Austria), I want to have all of the Olympia's. Now I've ordered an SF and I'll soon be buying an SG3. I also have to have the SM3. Thank's for your Vid. Greetings from Styria, Austria!

On the subject of machines becoming scarce in local cases, I think this all has to due with the nature of how machines tend to get into the market - donations from cleanup or, sadly, deaths of their owners due to age. I mean, we all know this of course, but we don't often think about it, how the machines that do go into the market make it there in small batches of usually 1 or 2 machines every once in a while, and then there can be long droughts of none making their way out! As I said, we all know this, but we never think about it - it's always a matter of being in the right place at the right time, and since many people would have either trashed or, more often I would hope, donated their machines way back in the day if they didn't keep them, we're in one of those phases where it's the leftovers that people have kept their whole lives really creeping out there, for us to get and appreciate. Being in the used video game scene as I am is an odd parallel - they don't make games and old consoles anymore, so there are a finite number of those available as well, and at our shop some consoles are so prone to breakdown we have stacks of dead ones lying around that are being stripped or have been stripped, some consoles usually being about %50 DOA as a rule - imagine even just 20 years down the line how few of these will be around which, when you think about it, really sums up your first point quite well, both how data and formats grow obsolete but also how the equipment itself dies out. Wow, this comment went all over, but I guess it makes sense.

Great thoughts, and a close parallel to video games indeed.

I'd say it's more than a mini resurgence in film. Just look at the amount of channels dedicated to or having film as part of their repertoire. New films are being introduced too.

It's not impossible that someone will make quality typewriters again. They are complex machines sure. But not complicated per se. They will probably not look like the old ones and the pricing is also going to be problematic. For a global market though, I'd say it's certainly possible. It IS a very nice an satisfying experience typing and there is an immediacy and directness, while still being neater than handwriting, that is just unique.

I can imagine these could be high end boutique products, similar to Leica cameras.

I wonder how many IBM punch cards you'd need to store your typical 12 meg photo. Lots of chad, that's for sure.

I'm going to do a video on a paper backup system for JPEG images.

Joe you are correct. This is going to be a visually undocumented generation. When we surrended analog we gave up our tactile humanity.
