Tyrone's story is one from rags to riches, his childhood was filled with love however he had to overcome living in a homeless shelter, being released by Southampton in 2009 for being 'too small' and eventually dropping to non-league football and becoming a mortgage advisor.

Living in Bath and being a step dad to a budding footballer (plays for chippenhams local rivals Bath city u18) its totally captivating hearing Tyrone speak. Hi Jake & Damian! ik I commented here a week late into the uploading of this video but hopefully this message doesnt go unnoticed Thanks for this video! Knowing Mings isn't at his best in the league right now, this video helps me know that people like him still has the mentality & still live by the values in life that got him to their highs and make them who they are - in this case, a Premier League player & England international, and therefore sitll deserves respect. Need more guests like this - those who are currently criticised a lot by the media and fans - to show who they really are, what they have went thorugh in their lives and why they deserved to get their jobs etc. I'm thinking people like Mikel Arteta , Chris Wilder or Graham Potter fit into such criteria. Anyways, this is a great video as always, keep up the high performance 👍

Damian and Jake, Many thanks for all you’re doing with the High Performance podcast, such awesome content. I’ve caught up on the Tyrone Mings episode this week and wow! Such an honest chat and so much for just about any walk of life. I found myself with so many parallels in my life despite the fact our lives are poles apart. I’m a lawyer and work for the Crown Prosecution Service in a specialist team prosecuting rapes and sexual offences. I love the continued theme throughout of taking responsibility and as Tyrone put it “we don’t know what’s going to happen but we do know we can control the process and the journey”. That basically sums it up for us in our work. We don’t know what decision the jury will make but we can give our all to presenting our cases at their best to equip the jury to be able to make their decision. When he talked about diversity, his thoughts also correlated with the unconscious bias we face in our work of ‘Rape myths and stereotypes’. As he said, people have potentially never had to think about the offences we are telling them of, they’ve never experienced them so it’s about educating and in doing that it helps to remove the stigma and improve understanding. I also loved all the talk about how we need to move away from an either/or mentality to a both/and. Both in terms of the rest and time away that is so necessary from the content of the work we give so much to and are passionate about to do a better job. But also in the fact that identity is so much more than what we do to earn a living. The talk of balance. I’m also a runner and involved in the leadership of our church. All the skills and abilities we have are sharpened and developed when applied to other areas of life. It’s just about keeping them all in proportion. Then it’s the using of that other stuff to give back too. It’s not just me who’s a runner, we’re a family of runners. So when my eldest son was diagnosed with leukaemia back in 2016, we used our running to raise funds and awareness for children’s cancer charities as we were just so grateful for all they were doing for us but also to recognise what had gone before by them in terms of research to make successful treatments and what they need to go forward. I have heard so much on the podcast about adversity and how taking responsibility for your response to it. What an encouragement it’s been to our family whose attitude has been to approach diagnosis and treatment that very way. I remember a friend commenting on how brave Isaac was and he responded that it wasn’t brave, he didn’t have a choice. Well he did gave a choice, not about illness or treatment, but his response to it. And it was the way e responded that caused the friend to comment on his bravery. Who knows, maybe you’ll have one of my boys on the podcast in the future! One last thing - I think Tyrone gave my favourite answer to the ‘Are you happy?’ question! Thanks again for a great podcast... I have ideas brewing.

Thank you for this podcast. I felt very inspired by it, listening to Tyrone was refreshing and his words resonated with me. I am impressed by his character and resilience and I definitely took a few things out of this talk. Clearly his personal experiences and adversities he's overcome created a huge part of his mindset and attitude, but I would love to find out what books he has read, I am sure they have also played a role in shaping him as a person. It’s crazy to hear how he placed his relationship with happiness next to the premier league because even in my career I feel like I’ve been doing the same thing, setting my happiness on a certain goal or area .. rather than enjoying the process/journey as he said. I understand not wanting to be seen only as a footballer, I get its only a job. But let's give the fans some respect here, football fans pay a substantial amount of money to watch football, players are paid vasts sums of money to entertain. How's it a such a bad thing that fans expecting there players main focus to be there club, which without let's be honest they wouldn't be able to succeed in other areas 🤔 fascinating conversation as always. There's a guy called Jonny Kim. He is a doctor who graduated with a masters degree from Harvard, then served as a US navy seal and as a NASA astronaut all before he turned 35. He's the highest performer I know of. Would be fascinating to hear his philosophy if you could get him.
