The Modern Martial Artist

Күн бұрын

Mike Tyson is one of the most notorious boxers on the planet, but back in the early 80s, he was a reformed deluigent taken in by the legendary coach Cus D’Amato. Cus taught Tyson the ins and outs of his peekaboo style boxing system, but it was up to Tyson to put it to good use. Today we’re going to look at the very beginning of Iron Mike’s journey, examining the techniques that lead to his incredible string of KO victories and the lessons he learned from each new opponent.
Today we are covering Tyson vs Hecter Mercedes, Trent Singleton, Don Halpin, Ricardo Spain and John Alderson.

The observations about Alderson being able to tie Tyson up on the inside and briefly blunt his attack that way underline what was one of Tyson's greatest weaknesses, even in his prime: he was often lazy on the inside and let himself be tied up rather than try to work free or rough things up on the inside, the way a Duran or Chavez would. That's not necessarily a bad thing; power punchers often work best from mid-range, where Tyson was absolutely deadly, but if he got to the inside without having accomplished anything, he was more content to start over again and try to let a new opportunity come to him while approaching his opponent than he was to work to create one on the inside, even though one would think with his short height and arms that he'd love being on the inside.
@dukeoversteer
@dukeoversteer 2 ай бұрын
Yeah Ive wondered why Mike didn't try to stay at mid range and avoid the clinch. You would think that when they would try to clinch that would be the time to shift to the side but hey what would I know! Love the videos.
