FINALLY! I am redoing the siding on the back of my 35 year old house (and, of course, then the sheathing and insulation) and this is the first video I've found that shows how to put in Tyvek when the windows are already in. Thank you! Thank you! (And, yes, working alone sucks. I can imagine how much easier it would be to have help.)

What's the purpose of the 'apron' below the window?

Partly to satisfy the DuPont technical review team for a retrofit situation. It integrates with the sill flashing in a correctly overlapped shingle-style. You could do it without the flap, just make sure not to reverse lap anything.

Thanks for this! I’m in the middle of a retrofit and debating removal of black paper before Tyvek and adding foam. I noticed you removed black paper…. Is this suggested from DuPont?

I'm not sure DuPont has a position on it. I removed it because I wanted to inspect the wall sheathing for damage, which I found outside the bathroom.

Yes. Each has its advantages, neither is necessarily better.

Where do you tape the windows to get a good seal if you do not have a nailing flange? I am doing the same project right now and I’m concerned water will get behind my tape.

Those windows are tilt-in replacements. The existing frame is sealed to the Tyvek and the replacement window is inside of the frame, sealed with caulk and canned foam. I'm pretty sure there's an animated section illustrating it.

Why do you add flashing tape to the bottom of the window in the very beginning? Shouldn’t you leave that open so water can get through if needed?

No. That was to seal the Tyvek to the wood sheathing fir the first layer of air barrier protection. Flexible flashing layer goes on top of that, kicking our past the foam insulation. when the windows are nor being replaced, you do not have an ideal scenario for layering. You can only do the best that the situation allows. I worked the details with DuPont's technical experts to come up with something that would work and was "easy" to install.

Which exterior insulation is this and where are you in the US? Did you pass permit inspection?

2 inch Styrofoam XPS, NW CT (climate zone 5). Yes, It was inspected and passed. None of this stuff is new, we have been covering it in the trade journals for decades.

I love this series! It’s been very helpful to in planning the project for my home. I’m curious though, Does the low perm rate of Tyvek concern you at all. I’m considering using delta S peel and stick for that purpose. Am I over thinking this?

Tyvek is vapor open -- it allows vapor to pass through it See this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2KtXmiprdF1jpY The Styrofoam covering it, while also permeable, will be the limiting layer anyway because it is less permeable. Consider the whole assembly, not just the individual layers. Dupont had some very in-depth details on their building performance website/

This is exactly like my house...except it's brick. Which is why I can't tackle a job like this without winning the lottery. :(

This job ain't cheap, either. You could spray the exterior of the brick with polyurethane foam, bedding furring strips to attach the new siding.
