Lovely Azaia sent me the cutest itty bitty fruit: the tzimbalo melon. Native to South America, it looks like a watermelon fit for a mouse, but what does it taste like? 🤔 Big thanks to Azaia for sending me the melons to make this episode possible. 💕 New videos every Thursday and Saturday 8 pm EST.

Is that solanum viarum? I tried Googling that and could only find 'joa-bravo' (I have no num lock on this laptop so can't add an accent to the a) It is apparently an invasive plant in the US now but no mention of toxicity. It seems there are a lot of very similar related plants in the solanum family and a great deal of them are toxic so hard to identify.. People used to think tomatoes were toxic because of this.

@@SobrietyandSolace Yes! Joa-bravo, juá is a regional spelling from the Central region. We consume some of the Solanum fruit here (S. sanctaecatharinae, S. paniculatum) but the S. viarum is widely known to be toxic, specially for horses.

@@PROUST_EFFECT Wow, you really need to get to grips with knowing your local flora, so many different species and even just looking up one of them, it used to go by 13 other names, and not common names either! What a minefield. I have trouble enough identifying plants in Trinidad where almost no one knows the taxonomy and there's a dozen common names for a plant that are also used for 2 dozen others and no two people can agree whether it tastes bitter and makes you sick because it is toxic or medicinal/super good for you lol. Also interesting to know about regional variation in spelling/language.

Amigo sabes el nombre científico? La planta que mencionas también hay acá en Arg. Tiene espinas hasta en las hojas y es muy tóxica!

I grew these last year in my summer garden for the first time. I will grow them every year my entire family loved them. Most of mine we're sweet but a few where sour with a hint of lime. We ate the whole thing though the skin was crisp.
