I was Cav Scout with 10th Mountain, and 1st CAV. Saw the original video a while back and remember thinking "this guy is carrying way too much." Real world in Afghanistan, you'd want an MRE, a change of clothes (not a full uniform but an undershirt, underwear, and socks). Maybe some extra med supplies, I'd always recommend a life straw water filter just for survival purposes, maybe some 550 cord, definitely a knife, binoculars. To this day I still have a go-bag for SHTF type stuff, and a lot of these items are in there. Today though I carry a handgun and add in some extra ammunition such as a box of 50-100 rounds of JHP plus a few loaded up mags, and a full first aid kit, plus a bottle of gun oil, which doesn't take up much room so I figured why not? Also, and I cannot recommend this enough - bring wet wipes, maybe a small thing of tissues, your toiletries (tooth brush, tooth paste, deodorant, face wash if you can). Hand sanitizer too, but hey that fits in the ankle pocket. The man pack radio is ridiculous. In real life we carried either those hand held Harris radios or more over the IMBITR's and that's on your kit, so really I'd extra batteries. Red lens head lamp is a good idea because you won't use your NODs for everything at night. I've never seen anyone carry an E tool (and you're right about how the original configuration of the E tool makes for a better weapon, though never ideal). The extra boots and uniforms are for larger ruck sacks and longer field missions. This is just a 72-hour bag though, and I feel that this guy is mostly just going by whatever TRADOC is putting out and that's almost never in line with common sense. This almost reminds me of that first scene in Platoon where Charlie Sheen is carrying a ton of BS and Willem Dafoe tells him not to next time. It's way too much weight for 3 days. METTC will determine a lot of what you pack, but some things remain constant.

Sometimes were out for longer than 3 days, but we typically never stay in one area for more than 4. Thats when we link up with the rest of the platoon/company to resupply and go on the next mission for another 3-4 days and repeat for 2-3 weeks in field training, such as NTC. Amd yes, we move A LOT. We climb tall ass, steep ass mountains if it means we have a good observation post to see everything we need to see to provide the best intel to the CO (Or the BC if youre in a Scout Platoon that is in an Infantry Battalion, like i was) my Platoon also had a sniper section attached to us so we had more fire power than almost the whole Battalion in you include our Bradleys and HMMWV's. The snipers bring a lot of fire power also. Sometimes we carry around a javelin for tanks/heavy armor. The training javelins are way fucking heavier than the real ones.

Them 11b's are lying saying their rucks are 100 lbs. Maybe 75 at most. And as a scout we can also carry up to that much but we prefer to make do with as little as possible. Only bring what we need until the next mission.
