I am not a fan of what Putin did in Crimea and Ukraine. However, the usual Western rhetoric is so simplistic, so basic, we have 24 hour news networks yet none go into this level of analysis. It's all talking heads with 4 second headline bits. Anyone who has followed the Ukraine, Russia, West dynamic in the last 20 years, would know that it wasn't just "big bad Putin" who wants to conquer all. Again, I don't agree with taking over other's lands, but there are reasons of why certain things happen. This whole conflict was so avoidable, but it takes two tango and the West wants to come out of this clean, yet it is so clear that they carry half of the blame .

I'm 65, and I literally grew up on Stephen Cohen. He was the go-to guy concerning the USSR for the MacNeil/Lehrer Report, which I never missed. Whenever he was on any show or network, he was always taken very seriously and was never disrespected. In videos parts 1, 2, and 3, I really like the way he's driven home the fact that it is totally necessary for Trump to be free to make deals with Putin and that the rest of the power elite are against that. He's made clear that even though the Red Scare was used to scare the hell out of the average American, there were always people in power ready and willing to talk with the Russians. Now, that simply doesn't appear to be the case. Therefore, Stephen Cohen is absolutely right that nuclear war is even more likely than during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which I totally remember had us all very worried and glued to the news. This is why Trump has to toughen up and put down all things Russiagate. He cannot depend upon any advisor he currently has.

@imrekalman9044
@imrekalman9044 5 жыл бұрын
Olopez82, @@sandeep2435 Okay, here we go! 😁 Russia didn't "feel itself weak", it was weak. By 2000 Russia's economy was not even in the top 50 in the world (63rd I read somewhere). And it had a lot of problems, collapse of social network, industries, corruption, crumbling military and some foreign backed terrorists in the Caucasus, a.k.a. second Chechen war. It is not insulting to call Russia of 2000 a shithole, just reality. NATO expansion to the East begun in 1999 (PL, CZ, and we HU), reached the Russian border with the Baltic countries in 2004. At the time Russia couldn't really do anything about it except complain. It has changed a lot since, and that bothers the West deeply. Putin and his team begun rebuilding Russia in 2000, starting with economy, slowly, systematically after some emergency social measures. It was somewhat changed after the 2008 economic crisis (and the incident in South Ossetia), introducing ways to isolate Russia's economy from the West, just in case there is another crash there. (Don't ask me about these measures, ask an economist!😁) This became extremely useful after the 2014 sanction packages (Crimea), Russia's economy only shrunk by 1% or so, which was quickly regained, and such protections were further pushed. Other sanctions ever since ("we came we saw we lost an election", Skripal false flag nonsense) don't have the intended devastating effects, those are more like bumps on the road. As they say in Russia "the dogs are barking, but the caravan is moving on". By now Russia has the economic, diplomatic and military power to say "nyet!" (=no). Meanwhile the US is continuing to terrorize the world, regime change wars, economic sanctions even on their allies, not understanding that they are not as big as everyone else combined. The US has broken its word so many times only in the past 20 years others hardly believe them anymore. At least not when it really matters. North Korea won't give up its nukes ever, because they don't want to become Libya. Iran is sticking to the "Iran Nuclear Deal", confirmed by the international atomic energy agency (IAEA), and so do everyone else, but not the US, and the EU is now planning sanctions ON THE USA. Russia only sent some 100 troops to Venezuela, and that was one of the reasons (and the clear headed reactions of Pres. Maduro) that the regime change attempt there simply collapsed. It was funny to see some White House guy saying "50 countries recognise Guido as president", and an AP reporter reminded him about the other ~140 countries that don't. "Russia is irrelevant, has no allies" is heard many times. Last year the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF'18) had participants from 143 countries. And they all wanted to make business with Russia.

"Small" signs have been seen recently that it is still a thing (2008 Georgia, 2015 Syria, countless examples of "Russian aggression" against US ships and planes near Russian borders), yet the west seems to ignore them. Truly insanity. For the record homosexuality is not a crime in Russia, "promoting homosexuality to minors" is. The president of Russia can serve maximum 2 consecutive terms, not 2 in total. At the last elections 1500 international observers claimed the election was legit. I choose to believe them. And yes, I've seen the CNN report with the camera footage of stuffing ballots. What CNN forgot to mention: the cameras were set up by the election committee to prevent such attempts. I wonder how much the elections were rigged by in your opinion, 10%, 20%? The state that controls the most resources weilds the most power and all modern war is about the division and redivision of the resources of the planet between compete oligarchs. They couldn't care less about us, we are nothing but cannon fodder for wars and consumer drones that buy the producrts they produce with 'our" resources and is how they accumulate their wealth while keeping us debt slaves buying land thast belongs to all. This is basis of inequality that we fail to deal with to our own detriment.\ “The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said "This is mine," and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.” Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality 1753 "Most of the major states of history owed their existence to conquest. The conquering peoples established themselves, legally and economically, as the privileged class of the conquered country. They seized for themselves a monopoly of the land ownership and appointed a priesthood from among their own ranks. The priests, in control of education, made the class division of society into a permanent institution and created a system of values by which the people were thenceforth, to a large extent unconsciously, guided in their social behavior. Western capitalism is private capitalism that serves interests of particular individuals. It is the quality of these individuals that determines their attitude towards their home country. With globalization and financialization most wealthy russians moved their money into western banks. In effect they moved their home there, because home is where the treasure is. So instead in investing into their country, they started living it up and participated in Wall Street casino. That was the integration into western capitalism. This story repeats with many, many countries.

And a cynic might add that the Syria War was all about the Russian Naval base in Syria and the endless threats and vilification of North Korea all about Russia's main pacific naval base near Vladivostok just north of the Russia/North Korea border. US Positioning for war with Russia, aren't they? Or is that "weren't" they? Was that supposed to be mrs Clintons task? "Take out" Russia? Would that be why Obama was told to let Mrs Clinton get a little War experience in Libya?

@@CobinRain I doubt Syrian war was all about Russian Naval base since it was barely operational at the time and Russsian Air Base didn't exist. Seems that main goal was to gas pipeline through Syria. Neither was N.Korean crisis about Russian Pacific Fleet since there are plenty of US Naval assets in Japan. Crimea is a different story.

What I like most about Stephen Cohen is that it is so obvious that he speaks with careful consideration of what he is articulating. Tulsi Gabbard is the only candidate who is articulating the concern of the nuclear dangers and the importance of having international discussions with other leaders before becoming bellicose with other nations.

Paul Jay may well be the best news-politics interviewer out there. Partly it's that he created an outlet that can tolerate three-hour interviews; partly he just does his homework and applies his impressively rational and non-ideological critical faculties to the issue and the person's ideas. He's happy to learn, be corrected, but he never shows fealty--or needless hostility. He's really good--like the Michael Parkinson of news and politics. (For my UK friends! :) )

The absolute essence of Yeltsin, to the Clinton administration, was manipulability. So we hoped Putin would be manipulable. Little die we know, in 2000, that Putin was not only deeply patriotic, and deeply Russian, but also one of the sharpest thinkers and diplomats Russia has ever seen. He has taken the trashed Russia after ten years of Yeltsin, and built from it one of the most self-assured nations of the world.

Good question 15:23 by moderator, Paul Jay. Very good question, indeed: "Why DIDN'T we assimilate Russia (if that was important to us), into western capitalism, when we had the chance. That's the real question. 16:36 -- Russia's "descent into corrosive, economic collapse" is something we don't here much about. No one in mainstream media that I know of ever brings this up. The fact that, the "collapse of industrial (mechanisims), people not receiving wages, or their social benefits, comments about the middle class were being vaporized in Russia, etc. and Russia being on the verge of breaking up", are all very cogent and important points that mainstream media never even broaches. It's never on their radar of discussion.

Before saying "Annexation of Crimea" and if you don't believe it was legal choice of Crimea people, go there and talk to people.. doubt you will find many who wanted to stay in Ukraine!!!! But over all he is right, wish many Media people will see the Russia like this.

@Random Person You are absolutely wrong "Annexation (Latin ad, to, and nexus, joining) is the administrative action and concept in international law relating to the forcible acquisition of one state's territory by another state. It is generally held to be an illegal act." the keyword is FORCIBLE!!! Another thing, there is an international LAW about free will of people held by referendum! And by the way Crimea was in Russia longer than US exist and was given away by idiot Cruschov. All corrupted media in the world saying Annexation even so it was Legal act and now when Trump gave away Golan Heights it not constantly in media even so it is soooooo illegal. and don't even start about Yugoslavia, US and NATO showed true face by bombing and I hate this part of the history because all involved should be in prison!
@Ash-vi9mt

@Random Person stop twisting the law - Annexation is by force.. not technical, how it is please you personally. No force were applied by Russia. Read f'n international law! I'm done talking here.

Actually, although I didn't agree with the annexation of Crimea by Russia. It should be noted that Crimea was a part of Russia until 1954, when Kruschev unilaterally signed over Crimea to Ukraine. No vote, no referendum. Hardly democratic. At least this time, the people of Crimea had a say in this. Arguably a more democratic choice...
