I imagine there's a benefit to practice controlling one's breathing in such a stressful situation. Amygdala's _(fight or flight response)_ activity is directly linked to breathing, and the more active it gets the more proportionally less active the "thinking" or "rational" part of the brain becomes. Besides, subconsciously being able to hinder Amygdala Hijack could reduce the effect of PTSD on the soldiers in the future. Still though. Why only a few seconds in the water? Even someone as unhealthy and unfit as me can swim around in my local ice hole for 5+ minutes. They're like _"yeah better get out before your body gets the chance to get used to the cold water, so that way you stay afraid of the cold water for life"_ - I mean, what?

If you’ve never done it, I don’t think you’ll fully understand. Really cold water feels like having the wind knocked out of you briefly. As kayakers, we used to practice saving ourselves in glacier inlets. Your body is shocked for a few seconds. They’re in just long enough to show they’re in control of their actions and not reacting only. Sometimes newbies would tip the boat with another kayaker in their uncontrolled reaction.

Dennis Helgi Both not so much a hobby as a health thing ... it’s called ice bathing a few people do it as soon as the ice is stable enough but you train up to it and no clothes or just bikini/ swim trunks but naked is actually most comfortable . Then we have people who do sauna ( like the Finns) and you go back and forth between the sauna and an ice cold shower , snow or preferably icecold lake or seawater sometimes hole in the ice like this... but when you do this latter one then it’s really not safe to do it more than twice and never alone. I really like that one but I’ve never done it with the hole in the ice though I have swimmed in 5 degrees water and broken ice to shower from a barrel. Also quite a few schools in Sweden especially more northern do these things to train the kids to handle an emergency situation on the ice with clothes as well as quite a few of our soldiers in the northern parts as well as our special forces for them it’s pretty much standard.

My original comment was a criticism of your use of the word "Valhalla" as I believe there is alot of misconception of this word out there. Valhalla is an English term you know? This is just a good old Norwegian baptism. On a more serious note, this is actually a very important exercise in the Norwegian Army, I've been through this myself a few times while I was in the army, although the instructors was much more demanding with us, we had to ''ask for permission'' to leave the water, and it's easier said than done to remember the 100% CORRECT sentence while in the freezing cold, and you start slurring your speech, I don't know how long I stayed down the first time but it felt like atleast a minute. Anyway, it is an important exercise because it trains soldiers in a situation that is very possible to happen in Norway, if a tank or any other vehicle, or even by foot-- if it goes through the ice in a lake, the soldiers needs to be prepared for the experience and what it actually feels like, because if you have never been exposed to such temperatures it might cause severe disorientation, especially in a situation where you might be driving a vehicle and it goes through the ice.

+B L So _that's_ why "Marine" is an acronym for "My Arse Rides In Navy Equipment"? ;-) Anyways: same here. I'm a former NCO who served in a Gebirgsjäger battalion (similar to the 10th Mountain in Fort Drum) of the Austrian Army ("Army" being the acronym for "Armed, Raucous and Misguided Yokels", as you might know) back in the 1990ies, and what can I say? We Mountaineers too aren't too fond of being in water either. Especially seawater, because at sea level the air is so fucking thick that to those of us who belong to the noble tribe of the Heavily Armed and Two-Legged Chamois, it always feels like you're breathing bloody maple syrup. In addition, our climbing equipment also isn't exactly what you would call seaworthy, mainly because inflatable carabiners are still in a very early testing stage, ice picks and crampons aren't worth a fucking damn if water's not in its solid phase - and swimming with 200 ft of dynamic rope strapped to the back of your tactical vest is just such a drag, you know.

From Finland here, did this every winter morning before breakfast for years, when we lived next to a lake. Usually spent 1-2 minutes in there swimming. Funny to look at these guys, they are tough but not used to cold it seems.

J. Snow It's a NATO thing, US train other NATO troops for some certain things, while UK Royal Marines train NATO forces for cold weather training in Norway, because it's one of their specialities. Thousands of personnel from various countries can participate in this training exercise including Canada, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Switzerland, USA, Finland, Spain and Denmark.

Some years ago in July we visited (North-) Norway again. On the bulletin board at the Berlevåg Tourist Information Center there was a hand written sign right next to the weather forecast: "If you ever want to swim in the Arctic Sea, do it today!" The actual water temperature was 12°C/53°F... :-)
