Hello guys your tasting review was great. I'am a former french soldier and if I may give you some advice : Those RICR are suposed to be eaten in order Breakfeast : Muesli,coffe ,and some chocolate crackers with jam Lunch : Pork paté with salted crackers and one of the cans the pasta one would be great Dinner : the soup (please next time put more water please) Parmentier de canard after that chocolate cream and a cup of tea or two For all the small snacks like pâte de fruits and commando bar nougat and the rest of the biscuits (crackers) you are supossed to eat them all day long on the field every time you like or can. And for everyone : a lot of these items look "civillian" like comming from your supermarket and it's done on purpose to remind you of the coutry when you are a soldier in operation a thousand of kilometers away from your country. Some of the brands are quite famous in France like the mont blanc chocolate. That was just my two cents. Tous gaillards pas de trainards.

@@Odah_ Most Americans have no exposure to languages other than English outside of the two compulsory credits they take in high school, and probably 90% of them take Spanish as their language option. The majority of us will never leave our country. Hollywood, therefore, is the only resource most have for exposure to other cultures, and unfortunately, it's almost always wrong in it's representation. As a nation, we really suck at paying attention to cultures other than our own, even internally. I took French in high school and have been to France on a study abroad trip several years ago. I studied the dos and don'ts before going, but the rest of my group very clearly didn't. There's no real excuse for it except that our culture brainwashes everyone into thinking we're the best country in the world and discourages us from seeking out information that could discredit that. This ignorance and apathy is, in my opinion, one of the worst aspects of our culture.

What’s amazing is that the French MRE and its content seems to have not changed at all since I did my military service 30 years ago. The “crackers” are a very poor substitute for bread which is something really difficult to do without in a meal for a French person. If I remind correctly, those crackers are best if you dip them first in the potage. Chocolate in Europe is very different from the US in taste and texture, because of different regulations. In France, it’s more often dark chocolate with a stronger flavor and much lower fats and sugar. The chocolate drink is supposed to be mixed with milk, not bland water. If I remember correctly there should have been powdered milk along the coffee, tea and cocoa bags.

We buy a bag of French waxy potatoes/pasta or rice and some frozen petite pois. You heat it up in a saucepan (with the fat) and the fat obviously melts, and then serve it without the fat and with peas, carrots and mashed potatoes/buttered pasta or plain rice. It’s absolutely delicious, it’s not cheap - about €25 for a large tin, enough to feed 4. My sons loved it when they were little as the meat falls off the bone and the seasoning is bang on ! It’s the perfect meal for when you’ve arrived late at night and don’t want to bother cooking anything in the oven from scratch. "This wont last someone a day" "Its 3600 calories" "yeah this is not enough". Bro, calories are calories, the french rations are incredibly dense, i mean the package is like less than half the size of the german ones, and yet it has more calories lol. 3600 is way too much food if youre not literally marching for 12 hours. An adult man needs 2000 if hes not doing much the whole day.

I was in the French air force, you got one of the best menu in my opinion and all of them are very great i have to say, there was only one that wasnt and they got rid of it now. For the spoon etc well yeah we indeed have a fork a spoon and a knife in the same knife that is given to us (or that you have to buy cause no budget) it's called the Tatou if you want to check it i'm sure you can find some in the US and for a little price (it also have a corkscrew cause well yeah. France lol). And for the cans yeah you are supposed to open them fully put them on the fire (no need to rush for a rock little tip you can just bend two of the four corners the other way so it makes a little stand and dont burn your table) and enjoy the sound of good food being cooked again and the smell !

Am I in the military? No Will I ever be in the military and have these? Also no Did I watch this whole thing and judge the food as current French resident? Absolutely yes. Muesli is eaten cold with milk, the pork would have been rillettes like pulled pork pâté, there wouldn't be creamer as its all drunk black, nougat is very popular in France, the duck is like a shepherds pie but with duck. The sweet drink would probably have been for a large amount of water as to not make a sweet drink. The 'crackers' would have had the salted ones for starter, cereal ones for jam, chocolate ones as snacks. Potage is like a 'thicker' soup that doesn't have large bits in it, I often have it in a mug to have it slightly thicker.

Setting the left over heaters on fire reminded me of something I'd almost forgotten. I was Assistant NCOIC for RC-North customs. When a unit was leaving we had to confiscate all the MRE heaters since they couldn't go on the planes if the MRE was opened. When our unit finally got ready to demob we had hundreds of the heaters and so we decided to put them in .50 ammo cans and water them down 20 or 30 at a time. The water boiled. The ammo cans warped. The fire department showed up. Love what you guys do, keep up the good work!

Potage is the blended vegetable soup that was once the start to every supper in French households. It’s usually thick, but can be thinned out according to preference. The basic ingredients are onion or the white part of a leek, a garlic clove, dry white wine or vermouth, water/broth, vegetables including majority potatoes, some carrots and whatever else you like EXCEPT cabbage, because cabbage gives it a funky taste and texture so it’s better left out !! Add fresh thyme and a bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste and that’s it…

Hachis parmentier is supposed to stay as 2 thick layers; minced meat at the bottom, mashed potatoes above and often an extra thin layer of grilled cheese on top. The mixing will happen inside your mouth when you chew; that's why you don't need to stir (especialy when it's cooking because it would be a hachis parmentier anymore).

Btw, in order not to burn the support for your fire thingie, you can raise 2 parts out of 4 so that it’s not in contact with for example the table, then, the little grip for the main food-can with the duck can be bent so that you have more grip on it 😊 Then, for the nougat, that’s what real French Nougat is, in the US the nougat you might have is not nougat that’s why you’re not used to it’s taste and texture

Dear tyler, a tip for any future MRE reviews. those canned main courses that you made (often found in european MRE's) have a bad habit to not get cooked through well and even get burnt on the bottom sometimes. To avoid this you should open them first and mix them around a bit before putting them on the esbit stove. It makes the experience of eating it much nicer. I spent 3 years in the austrian army and I learnt this the hard way where on my first 2 exercises I ate nothing but badly prepped MRE's due to my own ignorance and I would like you to be spared from this displeasure. BTW I enjoy your content a lot keep it up 👌

Greetings ! I'm happy you got to try one of our MREs, looking forward to seeing you try other french ones. I do use these 24h rations for hiking and stuff. I never drink the isotonic drinks, they are awful. Lots of good stuff in those MREs, so aside from the drink, I eat everything else. Was able to buy a few of them for 12€ each, which was a bargain, and I hope to find more soon. Also, you generally want to put a bit more water in the muesli as it's eaten like a cereal : it has powdered milk in it.
@egilkarlson72536 ай бұрын
Ok it is more modern that I had in 96-97, during my military service in the French army. We didn’t have the muesli, we just put the jam on biscuits. The hot meal is for dinner when the weather is colder, I always kept the soup for duty watch during the night with my friends for having something warm. We never mix chocolate with coffee. So we have many tablets to warm coffee tea soup and the hot meal. We didn’t have chocolate biscuits. Only the salted for paté and cereals for jam. In the 90’s we didn’t have so many snacks.

Duck parmentier is actually really easy to make if you can get your hands on "confit de canard" which is pretty much preheated duck legs in can. You just have to scrape the meat sloppy joe style and do a homemade mashed potatoes, put them in a container to heat it in the oven.

Your body actually gets use to the amount of salt thst you add to foods until you dont notice it anymore which makes you add even more thebsame happens with Sugar. The recommended daily dose of Salt is a teaspoon a day (5g) from all sources and generally most Europeans will use much less than people in America but because we dont add as much we can still taste the small amount of salt (im obviously generalising because there are definitely people that add much more salt than needed on both sides) Edit: Did the Muslie ask for hot water? Its almost always eaten cold and not cooked like porridge. We would generally add cold milk to it as you would most other cereals.

Another fun fact was that in the chow/ dining hall we also got red wine served. I've been in the military since 1981 ( different armies ) and served all over the world, I tried several different MRE's but in the end I will say that I prefer the French MRE's they are high quality. Note, I'm not French. Ps. Put the jam in the müsli, you can even crumble the Fruit nougat in it and everything in Europe is way less sweet then in America.

Haha, the fish smell yeah. Most european armies use esbit stoves like that one. Esbit is a german brand build on the discovery of that dry fuel chemical. Turns out its either very close or literally the same chemical that we smell on fish/gives fish the "fishy smell". Think similar to how sulfur is the poop smell, sulfur doesnt smell like poop, the sulfur in poop is what we smell (the most). Flameless ration heaters arent "a chemical" btw, its literally iron filings with an accelerator that makes the iron rust really quick when you add water, which, like any oxidation, releases heat.
