The official animated video for Get Out Of Your Own Way by U2.
The politically charged animated video for Get Out Of Your Own Way was developed by the Broken Fingaz Crew, an Israeli graffiti collective. Released in 2018, the Broken Fingaz Crew directors said the video was a direct response to the headlines of 2017: "2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders, who use people's fear to build more walls and segregation. The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we've combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques”.

Lyrics:
Get out of your own way
Ah!
Get out of your own way
Ah!
Love hurts, now you’re the girl whose left with no words
Your hearts a balloon but then it bursts
It doesn’t take a canon just a pin
your skin’s no covering...
Resistance, love has got to fight for its existence
The enemy has armies of assistants
The amorous, the glamourous
a kiss, a fist
Listen to this oh
Get out of your own way
Ah!
Get out of your own way
Ah!
I can sing it to you all night all night
If I could I’d make it alright alright
Nothing‘s stopping you except what’s inside
I can help you but it’s your fight, your fight
Fight back, don’t take it lying down you’ve got to bite back
The face of liberty is starting to crack
She had a plan until she got a smack in the mouth and it all went south like
Freedom, the slaves are looking for someone to lead them
The master’s looking for someone to need him
The promised land is there for those who need it most and Lincoln’s ghost said
Get out of your own way
Ahhhh
Get out of your own way
Ahhhh
I can sing it to you all night all night
If I could I’d make it all right all right
Nothing‘s stopping you except what’s inside
I can help you but it’s your fight your fight
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Blessed are the arrogant for theirs is the kingdom of their own company
Blessed are the superstars for in the magnificence of their light we understand better our own insignificance
Blessed are the filthy rich for you can only truly own what you give away… like your pain

I know that the song is mostly political, but I cannot help but associating it with my daughter. When they played the song in the Statue of Liberty, Bono said it was "to their daughters". At that time I start dreaming of singing this song to my daughter... I think that it would bring such a nice message to her. Few months later we got pregnant with a baby daughter. I was so happy, ready to teach her to "get out of her own way". Sadly, she was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease. "Nothing is stopping her, except what is inside". "We had a plan" to save her, until "we got a smack in the mouth and all went south". 28 days after she was born, her little heart failed her. "Heart is a balloon and then it bursts. It doesn't take a cannon, just a pin, your skin's not covering". "If I could a make it all right, I could sing to you all night". But I can't. And every time I hear this song I tear down, it now shakes me from inside out. Since that, I think of this song (at least part of it), as an anthem for all those fighting (whether they won or not) congenital heart diseases. The babies, their parents, their families, their doctors. In few days, there is CHD awareness week, which for us coincides with the first anniversary of her death. "It is their fight, but we CAN help them".

@@Enne_esse rush are masters of time signature change, style use and invention. U2s forte is creating a mood. Bono can be a smug prick, that let's the band down. Gruagach. Eire you’re wrong. They created masterpieces after 1997, like the album “No Line On The Horizon”, one of their best works. If one listens well to NLOTH, understands the grandness of the album. Songs of Experience is a good album, with some amazing songs, like “Little things that give you away” or “Lights of home”.

I'm not exactly "supporting" the "false propaganda", but I am not going to hate on someone going against the mainstream way of thinking. Rock music has always stirred problems because people couldn't handle a new way of thinking, just like it is now. It has ingeniously caused people to watch, listen, and respond to it.

FML, Bono has been motivated by the same things since he was a young teenager. Find a clip of him being interviewed as a 16yo and you'll hear him talk about the very same things that he cares about today and with the same passion. Larry new he had recruited a very special talent in Bono. He's an extraordinary lyricist , almost every song is representative of deep held beliefs whether personal or political

That's a black and white view Alex. Sometimes hate is necessary, especially when it's against those who deserve it. Don't give me all that ''loving is so much easier'' pish as if you're above everyone else, and you're somehow in the right, and if they disagree, or hate what you stand for then they're obviously the ''bad guys''. That's ignorance. Finally if the comment section offends you then you need to toughen up. Because this is nothing. In fact the comment section is mixed views, and quite right. We should have mixed views, and shouldn't cater to just one set of ideas just to suit snowflakes like you
@desimar3287
@desimar3287 5 жыл бұрын
Alex, you're very naive! No one just gets up in the morning thinking or feeling "gee, who can I hate today?" Hate is a natural response to something that you believe is being done against you with some intensity...it's a symptom, nothing more. Why don't you try looking at what is causing the hate rather than the hate itself stupid?
@desimar3287
@desimar3287 5 жыл бұрын
@@MP-ut6eb No, laziness is not bothering to type words and phrases so someone can actually understand what your trying to say. If you're going to make spelling errors, at least make them understandable. Again, seeing "hate" as the core problem is asinine in the same way as seeing sadness as the problem, or depression as the problem. They are just emotional symptoms of the REAL problem, so it's what is causing the sadness, or the depression, or the "hate" that is the true problem. You obviously do not understand human nature. Hatred is never a good thing for anyone for health reasons alone, but to simply focus on the symptom and not what is causing a person's hatred is insane. Now whether that reason for their impulse to feel hatred is rational or not is another story, but that does not in any way mean it should not be looked at before anything else.

Reading the comments I'm speechless of how some people will hate an amazing song for not being able to get out of their own way of their politics. Just enjoy a great music. Last I checked artists were "allowed" to make music of their own liking. Were able to use their freedom of speech.

They do in this very song : what allowed them into existence was people (aka human beings), mostly young, that didn't receive the love and help they needed to catch them while they were falling down. As such, hate only could gave them a way out of their dread, saying that not only would they feel accepted, that they would receive fame, fortune, and a meaning in their lifes, but that they'd feel loved by their terrorists peers and...as such...while dehumanizing others (like you subtly seem to do), they stripped away of their own in commiting the unthinkable. It was the same thing with nazism, stalinism in the past, people don't do choices like this when everything goes alright.

I know that someone of U2's new stuff is not everybody's favorite, but at least they're trying to make music that accommodates everyone. Guys, at least give this band credit because for as long as they've been around and with all the mistakes they've made and all the things they've gotten right, they still deserve your respect. You don't need to constantly criticize and bash there music or ideas because you don't agree with it, but at least try and cope with it. This world is full of too much negativity than for everyone to start bashing against this 30+ year old band. Thanks. And to U2 I say this: keep following what you want to do and be the band that you wish. Your music is a great inspiration to me and is always there to help me through struggles and work. Thanks.

Let's just talk about the music and lyrics. "Get Out of Your Own Way" sounds reminiscent of "It's a Beautiful Day" that U2 fans have come to expect and love! Plenty of healthy in-your-face imagery and criticism of a the crooked, conniving and all-too-convenient politician of our day (his name omitted as he doesn't deserve mention), gay rainbow imagery, and a message that love wins over hatred, racism and prejudice. Well-timed release so as to peak in Black History Month. Let's review, all the way back to "Pride In the Name of Love", when Bono sang in tribute to MLK..."Early morning, April 4, shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at Last...they took your life, they could take your Pride...in the name of Love...What more in the Name of Love?"....Again this song resonates with the young single woman, the activist, and the disenfranchised with a message of hope. Bono has gone ahead and spoken his honest mind at the World Economic Summit and that is a helluva lot more than we can say for other rock stars. Other rock stars like Sting should do same.

Didn't think this song was "good" but my perspective with this presentation has shed some new light on this song. Even when they kept performing it live on the streets and so. It's a very simple, catchy song with a clear message. And I think the message in this song has to be heard without too many distractions: Get out of your own way. Simple that. And that's what it is. This is a great song that says a lot, without telling much. I'm sure of that now.

They have been about socialism since day one? Really? Well, maybe...but it wasn't so out in the open. I"m a huge U2 fan, even have a tat of them. But I don't think I'm much of a fan anymore. Last concert he tried to bring in politics again in Phoenix and most of the crowd was unresponsive the next song. Just stick to singing.

You have to seriously question a group of people who don't want artists expressing their point of view. It's almost like they almost just want everyone to shut up and go away. Sounds a lot like the beginnings of censorship, if you ask me. Scary times from all sides... As an artist myself, I will state my point of view to my dying breath and hope that every artist, whatever their point of view, does the same.
@seethingfrog7485
@seethingfrog7485 6 жыл бұрын
You ought to take a class on reading with comprehension because no where did I say they should no speak their beliefs. You want to talk about censorship, then start with the MSM, facebook, KZbin and Twitter. Are you for censorship? Do you support them deleting comments and profiles? So, exactly what is going on in America? The censorship is coming from all of those people, and probably the same people you support. And socialism doesn't work, so yeah, I'm against what they say.
@MichaelAmidei
@MichaelAmidei 6 жыл бұрын
Well, you did say that they should "Just stick to singing", which sounds a lot like you want them to not speak their beliefs. Perhaps you mean that they should only sing their beliefs? I'm not exactly sure where the "mainstream media" and social media platforms came into this because I never brought them up. However, to answer your rather pointed question, I'm not for censorship. We do know that there have been vast amounts of psychological operations perpetrated against the American people by Russia, including the creation of bots, etc. There is proof of that and it has been talked about publically by our intelligence community. So, there has been a move to try and delete the accounts that aren't actual people and that exist to simply cause us to fight each other. I'm not sure whom you think I support, either, but that doesn't matter. And the socialism comment is interesting, seeing that it's the second time in two comments that you've mentioned it. Nowhere in their history has U2 been a socialist band or seen as supporters of socialism. I fail to see where that shows up in this or any of their works. I have no interest in arguing with you. No one ever gets anything done and it just wastes time. I hope that you ultimately find what you are looking for...

Yep. Stick the singing. Don't go on a rant about politics. Clearly the people have spoken with the NFL and other groups. People want to get what they pay for. I see him in concert for the music. If it has political meaning so be it, but don't start ranting about Trump this and Trump that. And the people didn't react positively at the concert, either.
