Harold's is quite unique. There used to be two locations, one in Parsippany, NJ and the one in Edison (Parsippany location closed about 10 yrs ago.). They are known for their HUGE sandwiches. You got the Junior, that's the baby. The "wow" factor is getting the next size up. You know it's big because they give you almost another loaf of rye to make additional sandwiches. It is really a unique experience getting the large size. Oh if you think that's big you should see the size of their triple-decker sandwiches, that will blow your mind. Their prices have gone up quite a bit since the last time I was there. Their Matzo Ball soup is crazy. You missed out on that one. The matzo balls are the size of a baseballs. The bowl it comes in serves at least 2-3 ppl. Almost everyone that leaves has a "doggie-bag". Glad you enjoyed it.

I've been to both places a number of times. Harold used to be the General Manager of The Carnegie for many years. Prior to that he owned the Montclair Diner in Verona. Nobody knows the deli business better than Harold's. So, the big differences between Harold's and Katz's are how the corned beef and pastrami are sliced - Machine vs hand sliced. The amount of meat on the sandwich - Harold's gives you more meat - Katz's is produced on site. Harold's uses the same production process that made the Carnegie's corned beef and pastrami. The price of the sandwich at Harold's is more expensive. Harold's, post COVID, I believe is back to giving its customers a free salad bar? Free slices of rye bread, health salad, pickle bar, sour tomatoes, et al. IMHO, Harold's pastrami and corned is better, but the big reasons for me are the amount of meat he gives you and I like my deli machine sliced. Also, the desserts available at Harold's are amazing. they are conversation pieces. Obviously, both are great. Oh, and there's free parking at Harold's.

This was fun. I read some of the pricing comments. All things considered Harolds has not increased all that much in the past 10 years. I grew up going to Katz's. At one point There was a gap from when I was 17 to when I was 34 and when I went to get my food the guy making it for me recognized me, called me by name, remembered my Dad (they had they same name) and I was blown away. A relative from Philly got a lot of our family to go to Harolds. Not one of us left unhappy!

Ohhh I've been here before, but I completely forgot about it! I need to go back. I think Katz's Deli gets its rye bread from Rockland Bakery by the way. I've eaten at Carnegie Deli twice... both times when I had friends and relatives visiting me. I normally don't do the touristy stuff, but when you have out-of-town visitors visiting you, you do the touristy stuff. Carnegie Deli's Pastrami sandwich is twice as big as your sandwich and about 50% bigger than Katz's. You're definitely taking a doggy bag home when eating at Carnegie Deli.

Yeah I miss Carnegie. I’d get the Fresser w 50/50:corned beef and pastrami with Swiss and Russian dressing. Almost a pound of meat. Now mine ya I’d finish it but I’m 6’3 and 170lbs. I used to live on the east village in a six story walk up and walked everywhere so it was all metabolism. People whining about food prices are pathetic. You get what you pay for. If you want to eat cheap do it. If you want to eat well. Ya pay for it and let’s face it. Deli is a specialty and just like a steakhouse you’re going to pay for the curated quality. If ya don’t like it don’t go. But ffs don’t be a whiny little biatch about it. Go to White Castle or Costco and eat your heart out.

You didn't try the coleslaw and you have to have the pickles first while you're waiting for your food and you must put the mustard on the Pastrami and corned beef sandwich first as far as the bread issue with the hot dog and the panini it looks good to me unless you want some soft soggy hot dog roll and paninis are supposed to be crunchy and of course the prices are absolutely out of this world but wait you were in New Jersey prices are high everywhere unbelievably the average Joe really can't afford to go out to eat anymore it's crazy good with you as always just taste the food don't talk so much and then talk LOL

2nd Avenue in Manhattan is better than both Harrold's and Katz's and it's actually Kosher, unlike the the other places. You should have showed the case that holds the cakes when you walked in to show the size of the cakes. Harrold's is known for the crazy huge portion sizes because they are the only Jewish style deli I know of that serves food family style. You must have seen a few tables that were served sandwiches which were literally piled high with 2 foot tall sandwiches or a slice of cake the same size. Even the Matzoh Ball soup has a Matzoh Ball the size of a softball in it. By the way, if you didn't like the bread that came with your sandwich, you could have gone to the pickle bar and gotten different bread. Besides pickles, there is an assortment of free bread. When I first went to Harrold's, since they close somewhat early, they put out fresh bagels at the pickle bar and the owner, who is a super nice guy, encouraged us to take as much as we wanted to take home and gave us bags. The food is good at Harrold's, it's not the best Kosher style deli in the world but one of the reasons I love to go is to see what other people are eating and look at the huge portion sizes. It's a lot of fun!

It’s the best Jewish deli in America .. worked sanitation for 20+ years in NYC and we would go to Harold’s at least once a week and if you think the sandwich’s are huge you should get breakfast, they used to have 32 egg omelette’s and when you order bacon you literally get 1lb lol and there matzoh ball soup comes in a bowl that is freaking huge lol … but the two things they are famous for is there pastrami sandwiches and there pickle bar …., people used to try to take tons of pickles to go do of course they had to change up there rules so now you can only leave with the pickles left on your plate .. yes a single sandwich is around 18$ now I am not sure it’s been 5+ years since I moved to Florida and when I left sandwiches were 14 just going to 15 ..but when you order a sandwich you literally get 1 1/2 pounds of meat plus you can take a loaf of there insane bread to go so 1 sandwich can feed 3 hungry men or 1 sandwich can last a week of leftovers…. But what makes it the best Jewish deli is the fact that Katz and others price gouged their customers to the point only wealthy people in manhattan can afford there food …. Plus go an order one pastrami sandwich from Katz and it’s 25 bucks and you get one small rolled up sandwich they roll the meat to make it look big but it’s small

I've eaten at Katz's many times, and the Carnegie Deli a few times. Both are fine. Carnegie was a bit overpriced and touristy. The place I always took people, visiting from out of town was Wolf's in midtown. It was a Kosher Delicatessen so more authentic than Katz's or Carnegie which are merely "Kosher style." And personally I thought it was much better than either. Unfortunately, it was closed some years ago. Obviously, people need some instruction before ordering in a Kosher place. But it's worth it.

I’m a veteran Harold’s guy. Probably the one thing I like the most besides the tongue is that you can specify either lean or fatty corned beef or pastrami. I usually get the tongue/corned beef combo extra fatty. It’s the fat that that gives it the flavor and juiciness. My cardiologist reads me the riot act when I tell him about this. I tell him to try it and tell me about it on my next visit.

Haven't been to Harold's in years, probably 12 to 14. My problem with the place then was everything was to big. The pastrami sandwitch was ment to feed 4 or 5 people. They would place this sandwitch on the table with 2 lbs of meat in it.... I felt they were specializing in quantity over quality. (The pickel bar had loaves of sliced rye bread so you could break it down into smaller sandwiches) Looks like they have normal portions now... might be time to give them another try

Jersey Mike's recently opened in the small midwestern town where I live. At first, I thought UA was reviewing Jersey Mike's. We have been bombarded with Jersey Mike's commercials with Danny Devito.

Pastrami > Corned Beef. Harold's is great. The pickled cabbage and half sours are two of my favorites. I miss home and thank you for bringing it to me in video, so I can live vicariously. The Bagel Deli in Denver is very good. Highly recommend them.

You have to put some of that mustard on that sandwich . It’s not for dipping lol. In the early 1980’s I recall a restaurant called Harold’s in Randolph NJ . Im guessing this was the same Harold’s as it is today. They had deli sandwiches plus other options. I recall a guy that worked there. He greeted and seated people. He said his name was Harold. But his real name was Mel.

Hi UA! you have to go to Los Alamitos California and try Katella Deli and bakery. Also , while you are near LA county, you should also try Busy Bees sandwich in San Pedro Ca. At Busy Bee there’s no sitting area, what the locals do is get their sandwich the go to the Korean Bell less than a mile towards the ocean and have a picnic therei

evetime I go to my datacenter in "Edison, NJ" I always stop at Harold's. Its been a few years, I might go in the next few weeks and surprise my family with some amazing pastrami sandwiches'! Food is amazing and now I need to try that hotdog !!

I've eaten at both. It's not even close. Harold's offers monster size sandwiches of sub par quality meat. Katz's offers big sandwiches of delicious meat. Katz's wins hands down!

Hello UA, There are a couple of Jewish Delis called Ben's on Long Island. They have an overstuffed corned beef and an overstuffed pastrami sandwiches along with tongue . Hand cut french fries, free pickle and coleslaw tray. Bottomless drinks. You have to try it out.

I've been to Ben's in old country road and I prefer Harolds. Carnigie deli was amazing and I would eat there once a month. I prefer the orginal Bens on queens blvd but they shut down man years ago. My heart broke on that one cause I lived a few blocks away. Sad to see so many places closed down.

Oh that pastrami!!!! I would love access to a pickle bar, I would go nuts. I have never been a fan of panini sandwiches, I prefer softer bread except for my french dips. Great review.

Most "half sour" pickles you get in Jewish delis, are in fact really "new pickles," which are pickles that are barely pickled at all. It sounds like you got a true half sour pickle there.

Harold’s great for dinner. They give you a whole rye and pounds of corn beef. You share it. The matzoh ball is like a bowling ball. Go back at dinner. As for another deli try Ben and Irv’s in Huntingdon Valley PA Just north of Philly near Bucks County Oh and EAGLES this weekend

Great place, excellent video. You may have done yourself a disservice by not ordering one of the larger sandwiches; the portions are where Harold's really shines. If you're looking for more good Jewish deli's in Jersey, try The Kosher Nosh in Glen Rock. Their sandwiches are excellent, and their pea soup is the best!

Hi UA, if I was in Jersey I’d be there for that pickle bar! The rest looked very good but just on sight the bread (not the rye) looked sus. I checked with my friend in NJ and he’s a regular. He agrees about the pickle bad. I’ve never seen one like that. Look in your grocery store and see if they have Dave’s Famous Pickles. Such spicy great pickles. It’s a West Coast chain but non-refrigerated pickles can travel. As I said when you’re in L.A. next, Brent’s Deli in Northridge. Their rye is double baked made by them and awesome. Their pastrami and corned beef are off the hook and their Black Pastrami Reuben is to die for. Their Cabbage Beef soup is amazing, too. Get back here already! LOL.

@jbs256

@@brandoncarpenter9681 oy! So many are gone now. I’m on the west side so schlepping to Northridge takes traffic coordination and timing. Juniors, Jerry’s & Zucky’s all gone over the years. Fromin’s in Santa Monica still decent and familiar, best Cole Slaw winner IMHO. Langer’s, Factors and Nate & Al are difficult so I haven’t been. (I think I went to N&A once when I worked in BH, not memorable.) I don’t deli a lot, cost, but when I do I schlep to Northridge but never alone, not worth wasting a trip. How did I forget Canter’s, yes Canter’s rates and they recently opened a small version not far from me.
