Ubisoft Doesn't Want You To Own Games (This is so Stupid)

Physical game purchasing is quickly becoming the only way to truly own a game. Ubisoft just made that even more clear by saying that gamers need to "get used to not owning games." Let's talk about why that's SO STUPID!

Bro, this video PERFECTLY sums up why I cherish old school gaming miles more than the current generation. Those were the best days when ownership of games were trivially easy because once you purchased your own copy of the game, you're set and you can play it as many times as you wish as long as you have a functional system set up with a power source and the correct cables to the TV, and of course a compatible and functional controller plugged in the console.

Time does not stop. All the great games from the 1990s and 2000s is now 20 to 30 years old. What if 30 MORE years from now, kids now will want to show their own kids what they played when they grew up? What if they did this during the GameCube era? It would be long gone because the GameCube is now 23 years old.

I love physical games, but even physical media is doomed- disc rot, and the flash memory NAND storage dying in 3DS and Switch cartridges. Some people say their 3DS carts are already not working. And this is a separate issue from the disc reading or laser hardware dying. I do think physical is always better because of dumb online only DRM and games being revoked from the store due to licensing, but the game industry needs to do something more for preservation or stop complaining about piracy. It’s all due to a service and product issue. Just recently there was a big shenanigan with Capcom adding malware to their games in the name of “anti-cheating”. They’re shooting themselves in the foot!

That's why the efforts to rip/dump the content from discs and cartridges is so important. Because it gives you the opportunity to make a backup of the content in case the original packaging (disc or NAND) starts to degrade and die. People have done that since the N64 days and it's saved so many games.

It isn't going to matter at some point in the near future whether you have a disc or not. Everything requires an internet connection to play and all they have to do is deny the license when the check is done. We're all going to end up with 70+ dollar coasters.

While I would never encourage piracy, I would say that piracy does have some place in the world, but that's only because of companies creating and encouraging reasons for it to exist. Some games have fallen so far into obscurity that there are no legal digital copies, and the illegal ones may have an anti-piracy mechanic to encourage you to buy the game, which you may or may not be able to do. I have a physical copy of Black & White 1 and 2, and I'm holding onto those because EA is never going to re-release them as digital downloads. Those games are obscure, but at the same time, they're considered the best in their sub-genre being God-game. Also, side note, Black & White 1 and 2 were developed by Lionhead Studios and published by EA. With Lionhead Studios being gone, that basically leaves it to EA. And then you have what was talked about in the video, games, or content in general, that can only be legally accessed through a subscription. It really seems like the gaming industry is just going downhill, and that hill gets steeper and steeper every year. It makes me wonder if we'll end up reaching a point where the current gaming industry comes crashing down, and we have to start all over again from the beginning with brand new companies, brand new gaming consoles, etc.
