Exactly. I’m fine with diversity when it makes sense and is written well and especially if it fits the setting and time periods. Yasuke should’ve just been a side character while we could’ve had a Japanese Samurai main character and then can have straight, gay, or bisexual relationships because some historical Samurai in feudal Japan did like other guys or even both genders because sexuality was viewed differently in Japan at the time. Heck they even had a 3rd gender called Wakashū in the Edo-Period. Some famous examples of Samurai that are said to have most likely been bisexual from evidence like love letters are Date Masamune and Takeda Shingen. I agree though that Yasuke made absolutely no sense and it is just a genuine shame and missed opportunity that they didn’t portray actual historical examples of diversity.

You are sadly misisng a key thing here. Removing Yasuke would be a titanic task to do in few months…for the developers. Captain crunch will come to save the executives, sending a dozen employees to the hospital, but that is a sacrifice they are ready to do in the name of their lack of morality, sense of money and complete and utter incompetence. Honestly they should just scrap it. There is no way Shadows is gonna be good. DEI aside I have not seen a single trailer of the game that looked good. The level of rework they have to do is so fundamental that it will likely come out as a patched mess that everyone will compare to GoT. Maybe Yasuke and AC Shadows could have worked if they treated it as a comedy and parody of samurai movies, in the style of Mel Brooks. The best they could realistically do at this point is add in a third playable character thats an actual japanese samurai but thwyd have to completely change cutscenes and the script so its more likely a dlc for some sort of side quest with a samurai taking place instead. They probably wont even do that though. Game is going to be a write off at this point.

They've had 3 major flops this year (Skull and Bones, Star Wars Outlaws, and Delaying AC: Shadows) No company can just keep pumping out failures and expect to stay together. You know what this reminds me of? The Pirates of the Caribbean pc game tie in. It was originally being developed as Sea Dogs II (Sea Dogs I was a good game) by the developer Akela. Those of us Sea Dog gamers were really excited when Sea Dogs II was announced. Well into the development of Sea Dogs 2, it was announced at the last minute a deal was made to retool the game and make it a Pirates of the Caribbean movie tie in game. It was so last minute and rushed, the devs didn't have time to remove anything from the Sea Dogs II content. That fact was later discovered and mods were made that brought the game back to its original content and intent. Rejoice! So yeah Yasuke can be converted back to the original character easily. As you can tell, I've been at this a long time. A long long time. Too long. 😄

The mistake definitely wasn't including Yasuke in the game at least, it was making him the main focus since he is neither a samurai nor an assassin to which follows a creed. He was later added in as an afterthought over someone who could have been a native in the game and an actual samurai/assassin combo. Yasuke is just a big dude that breaks things and honestly would have been a great thing to either have him as a supporting character, someone you run into regularly on missions as an ally, or as an unlockable character you can access later on to add in rush down sections for distractions. Basically, there are cool things they could have used him for and just didn't

Thank you for highlighting the OTHER consultant that Ubi hired. So many people focus on Lockley and don't even know that Ubi's consultant on society in feudal Japan specializes in wakashudo relationships. Hattori Hanzo would have been a likely choice (and a better one, to be honest) - he was a _suppa,_ a "servant in the dark" to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
