I don't make any pretense to speak for anyone else, but as a former member of the Gator Band, let me make a couple of points. While this may have been disrespectful, the LSU Band apologized on their Facebook page. Nobody got hurt, they got drowned out to the point that most people in the stadium weren't even aware of it, and it didn't prevent TP from coming back. And it wasn't Georgia. Also, after reading the comments here, I can't help but ask, "What would Tom say?" If he were playing a tribute to someone who had passed away and people in the audience started shouting him down because they didn't like him (yes, that's hard to imagine, but stay with me here), I suspect his reaction would be something like this: Stop the song and tell everyone, "Look, this isn't about me, this is about paying tribute to someone who has moved on. So I'm just asking that you put your hate away for a few minutes and let us honor this person that we all love." And because he's Tom Petty, everyone would do just that and he'd finish the song. Of course, I am not as awesome as Tom Petty, so I won't be surprised when this gets trolled instead. (But I am just awesome enough not to let it bother me. Troll is as troll does.) If you really want to honor Tom, forget about this crap, relish the music, and if you were able to be there on Saturday, remember -- "You Got Lucky."

FYI: Tom Petty has a channel on SiriusXM. For the past week people have been calling in to share their stories of listening to TPH. And a lot of them are too young to remember these songs first being released. They heard it on the radio, they saw videos on MTV, or they heard their parents listening to it. Petty's music is timeless. That's why he's an icon. And that's why he was honored in the Swamp.

Not exactly. You're right that the first part was during "We Are the Boys", but that ends about 15 seconds in. The LSU band continued to play for about another 45 seconds, over the tribute. And the LSU band did indeed know about the tribute in advance.

I was right above the band and had a clear view of the scoreboard(nose bleeds), it was for more than 15 seconds more like 30 or so of the "We are the Boys" chant. I know because I was laughing that you guys ruined your own chant by booing. Apparently they did know the tribute was going to happen and started playing earlier than usual but the tribute started a little early or at least that was the bands response.

Most musicians (and other performers) had day jobs when they started out. Unless you're born with connections, you have to work your way up. Petty is, in many ways, the American success story. And the fact that he never forgot his humble beginnings is part of why he is so popular.
