This song will always remind me of the bittersweet, turning corners, and moving on. I listened to it a lot around the time that my relationship with my first love, (an 11 year relationship) was fizzling out and coming to an end. I loved her desperately, and yet i knew we were sliding further and further away from eachother. When she broke the news to me that she wanted to move on, I didn't want to let go, as I had told her I never would. What goes up, must come down, and coming down is the hardest thing.

Thank you for serving a wasted war. I actually don't like any wars... My son started in the Army National Guards and has traveled. Pulled himself through college as I'm a single mother. He's a school teacher, now in Army Reserves & goes on drills. His grandfather served in WWII & received 3 💜. He had a difficult experience in service. I take interest listening or reading of our veterans. I like a band which Tom Petty was in years ago. My son is taking me there for my 70th birthday to listen to these bands as my birthday gift. Looking forward to it next month. Again thank you for your hard work & service. Freedom comes with a huge price & all veterans have helped our country. This song is very special to me. My father was a commercial airline pilot. We shared a love of flying and airplanes. On the day of my first solo flight, he came with me to see me fly for the first time. It was the only time in his 85 years he ever said he was proud of me. And he'd been waiting his whole life to say, "My son the pilot". On our way home, this song came on the radio. I miss you so much Pa.

This absolutely blew my mind. What an incredible synchronicity and beautiful moment. I have full body chills haha, all I can say is “wow” 🤯 take care my friend I hope you’re doing well ❤ Edit- Actually I thought of something to say: This anecdote perfectly exemplifies the incredible power of music. Music is the deepest and most emotional communication form available to us. This story clearly shows why it’s important that we always strive to create the best possible art and express the true depths of how we all feel, that words could never describe. Art is more real than life in some ways.

Man the layered guitars just make this so special IMO, the more percussive steel string, that crisp, bright electric clean tone, that jangly tone during the chorus, and that delicious blues fuzz for the solos. The interplay between each guitar's melodic part creates this luscious cloud of guitars sailing smoothly over that insistent, punchy drum pattern. It reminds me of some of JJ Cale's music, the way it just floats along (e.g. "Ride me High", "Travelin Light", "Friday", "Carry On").

My best friend of 33 years (who has lived with me (platonically) for 25+ years) passed away 2 days ago (blood cancer/'Multiple Myeloma'). For the week & a half before his death, he was being kept heavily sedated (for pain) in hospice & was unable to communicate. The day before he died, I held his hand and told him I love him, and asked him to please send me a sign when he gets to Heaven & gets his wings. *ONE HOUR* _after_ his time of death, this song ('Learning To Fly') came on the radio...& the song that played _after this_ one, was "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters. Even if it was just coincidence, these 2 songs being played *back-to-back* at the *one-hour mark* after his death, & my having asked him for a *sign when he gets his wings,* brought me comfort. ❤

This is not only my favorite Tom Petty song, it's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. It makes you feel so much, seemingly so dispersant and almost all at once. Amazing song for times such as these. The video is a masterstroke as well. So many decades and events, referenced with a mere scene or frame. The decrepit majesty, ancient crypt solemnity and mournful yet graceful repose of the aircraft graveyard looks like one of the best places to film, I could spend weeks there just listening to whispers of war stories and fish tales... Amazing how a song can mean one thing to you when it was released. But now through the prism of time this song takes on a different message. One of Petty's great songs. Simple really melodically.

For sure. I was 17 when it came out, and I sensed the song's depth, but it helps to be pushing 50 to really get it. Beautiful video as well.
@lockedin602 жыл бұрын
@@ericforster7396 True. Songs can take me many places. Then and now. Many people remark what they were doing or what music they were listening too when world important events happen. You can't remember one without the other. I still get goose bumps when I hear Boy Meets Girl "Waiting for a Star to Fall". I had been in a new relationship with a woman that eventually became my wife. But sadly we divorced in 2005. I still love the song and now it doesn't bring the old negative part with it. One of my favorite songs is Dan Fogelberg's Make Love Stay. During an acoustic set at a concert he explained that the song was inspired by a book he had been reading by American Author Tom Robbins. Still Life with Woodpecker! The way he could craft a song just like Tom. Simple words, Simple thoughts strung together in meaningful ways. Songwriters often say what we may be feeling at a time in our lives.

I love complicated music showcasing virtuosity...but there's a lot to be said for 4 chords, great melodies (and harmonies) and a story. It takes a special type of genius to make such a great song out of so "little".

Dear Mr Petty, our local radio station used to play this song VERY often when I was a child when it came out. So this song is kinda THE soundtrack of my childhood. Isn't it weird how a singer ""just makes a song" that means like "childhood" for others? I know you died a few years back, but with this song you will live at least another ONE lifetime of 50 years with me. Thank you. And may all the angels fullfill your divine wishes.,...
