ArcDevErik If you looked closely you'll find that though Sonnen was on top position throughout the fight, he was inside Silva's closed guard. Yeah he did open it up from time to time but he always could close the guard and that's being in the most advantageous position from the bottom. And he was throwing heavy strikes from the bottom that made Chael bleed on Anderson. Anderson didn't have a scratch on him. You can be on top but being on top while your opponent on the ground has you in his or her guard is a dangerous place to be. It's neutral territory.

If this isn't evidence enough of Chael purposefully playing an eccentric character in all of his pre-fight banters, I don't know what is. He's one of the most humble and kind-hearted guys in the sport outside of the business aspect of things. Every person I've seen who's met him on the streets or trained with him or had him for a wrestling seminar has nothing but glowing words. He promotes his fights by being bombastic and fuckin' hilarious, that's all there is to it. He gave us one of the most exciting fights in history at UFC 117, and that continues on even to 2018 when I'm writing this comment.

Chael Sonnen made a fan out of me. The guy talked big trash against Anderson Silva, and backed up every bit of it, taking Silva to places he's never been. One of my all time favorite fights in the UFC. Even though he didnt walk away with the prize, people will remember this fight and both their efforts. Chael took this fight to Silva for 4 1/2 rounds like no one had before. Chael owned the entire fight and made Silva be the champion that he is. If there was one thing that ended this fight for Chael, it was when he stunned Silva with that punch in the 5th that almost knocked him out. Chael followed him to the ground and tried to finish him. Had he just tied him up and coasted, Chael would've been the champ, but as we can see, coasted 'aint this man's style.

Silva's training includes getting hit in the chin and he turns his head to make the blows less effective. Nearly all of Chael's punches hit Anderson on his lower face. The only usual places people get bruised or cut in at the top of the face. Mostly the eye area and nose.

I think Silva was far more in control of the fight that anyone here will give him credit for. He purposely sought to conserve his energy and get Sonnen tired.
