Exactly, I had a boss who was a nice person sometimes but mostly would shoot down my suggestions and make me ridden with self doubt. She knew I had social anxiety so she would only look at my weakness and rarely on my strengths, she would never take my side despite me being her right hand, it would always be the other person who would be right and something for me to learn. So i would much rather just sit in resentment than making a fool outta myself by talking to her about what all I did.

This is so true. We had a meeting one day and I only added some info to a report we were updating everyday. Our product owner presented me as the mind behind the report and as soon as he gave me the word I told them the truth. That earned me more respect from the guy who made the report originally and was training me, from PO and everyone else who I had or hadn't worked with yet.

Yes!!! Do NOT confront! Usually people like that thrive on confrontation. And it is very likely they already run to the boss with every little thing anyway so might as well show your side of things. I had a horrible coworker that knew i was ridden with social anxiety so would use that to get alk the bosses against me. Being shy people see as stuck up too sometimes. A curse 😂❤

@@AdviceWithErinI really need to see more on this topic. I was totally thrown under the bus on my 2nd day of work. In my job interview I suggested to the boss that I could revitalize the company’s dormant instagram page. The boss loved my idea and hired me. On my first day I trained my coworker on IG (and we did the other normal store tasks) and on my second day morning my coworker told me I was not needed at all on HER idea of the Instagram project and to stop taking any photos. The boss is rarely in the store and I don’t have one on one time with her. My coworker texts the boss all day long. I suspect the coworker smells sales commissions as her motive. And managerial credit on her resume (which I read). I’m pleasant with the coworker and realized I need to build an independent positive relationship with the boss. I’m glad it only took me an hour or two to see the reality of my coworker’s actions because the other time a male manager took credit for my work, I quit and it took me almost two years to realize how and why he did it. Big improvement!

I had to quit a job for something similar, I stayed overtime for hours, didn’t even stop for lunch, did all the work and then argued with her for not doing anything and told her i did this and this and I left this for you, guess who went running to the boss crying how I left her all the work and how I don’t respect her as a colleague. So I just quit, I was still on probation period so I can quit without a 2 week notice and that cost her her holiday. It’s been 3 years and my only regret is that I didn’t see her face when she heard that I quit and she can’t take time off.

Yes, slayyyy. My fav moment is the coworker who tried to throw me, not just under the bus, but she wanted to be driving while it ran me over, end up getting fired right in front of me. So beautiful. The boss that had her side really tried saying he fired her 'for me'. Like you had no choice. who watches Netflix while fire watching??? Insane narc that's who lol. Remember: it’s not personal, just professional 💅🏻 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sure, you could confront Jen. And by all means, pull her aside & directly ask her to give you credit in the future. Give her a chance to make things right. 😌 However, it’s important at work (and in life) to not fixate on things you can’t control (like others behavior) and instead focus on what you can. 🥅 You have to remember what the end goal is: to get credit for the work you did from the people who actually impact your raises & promotions. ❌ Don’t be distracted by competitive, sneaky, or lazy coworkers who take credit. They’re already taking credit for your work-knowingly. You can’t change their morals. ✅ Oftentimes in the workplace, you have to be strategic about where you expend yourself. 🎮 There are many things you can’t control (like your coworkers behavior)-so you have to focus on what you CAN control. 🤝 Being the bigger person always pays off in the end. Don’t be distracted by people who don’t have the power to give you what you want. You got this! 👏

At my last job I volunteered to do some charity outreach work, after spending a lot of my personal time on it. My bosses boss came into a team meeting one day and thanked a totally different person for doing the work. The guy who he thanked didn’t step up and admit he had not done the work, instead he took credit for it. It turns out the management were taught to do this by some guru, as a deliberate technique to motivate people to do things again and again until they got the credit for it. Needless to say I did not continue to contribute, and left the company for somewhere better.

You protect yourself by emailing your boss before taking on any work that isn’t already assigned to you or in the scope of your contract. Keeping them constantly in the loop even if they don’t read the emails is better than getting stuck later. Also if your boss dismisses you about it, you have proof. If you didn’t do the email beforehand, start an email chain and remember to cc in their boss too or whoever is meant to be in management above them. “Hi boss, just as a follow up from our earlier conversation that didn’t get finished, I’d like to send you some documents about my contribution towards the newsletter Jenn and I just put out. Please let me know whether you’d like that to be sent over email or if you’d rather have a printed copy on your desk tomorrow morning. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me today and read this email. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards,” Be respectful but firm and make sure all language you use reflects the narrative you want to tell. Notice that I wrote “Jenn and I” instead of just “Jenn”. Don’t let them use anything against you so triple and quadruple check your email to make sure it reads exactly how you want it to be interpreted. This won’t help your relationship with Jenn but it will show your boss that you aren’t a doormat and they will think twice about messing with you. I did this at my own company when onboarding was harassing me and I CCd my manager and my deputy manager and got my manager to cc in HR. After that incident, all of onboarding got a stern talking to about making sure to not harass people who are already employed for months now over documents that were given months ago. I won only because I could prove my paper trail via emails showing I sent all that I needed to and that they were received. This is the biggest lesson you could ever learn in business.

You provide proof in writing via email that you did do this (and keep it as evidence if they retaliate). State clearly in that email that after how they treated you however, you no longer want to continue working on this project in the future. Promptly “accidentally” lose all of the work you put in. Did you have the entire newsletter designed for easy updating every month? That’s gone now 😂 have fun making it from scratch AGAIN and this time without your help. If it’s too bad leave. Protect yourself bb.

It won’t work in most place. Best way to solve this is to ask the boss if they saw the time you spent on that project or if you filed that time incorrectly. Make it about you making a possible mistake. Then learn how to make sure that your involvment is seen.If your boss is good, they’ll start giving you credit. If they don’t, then don’t waste your time because nothing will fix this.

That's actually the best way to prevent any uncomfortable situations. Always put your manager on CC and when you have important meetings without the manager write him a short note about what was decided concerning you. You don't have to spend time writing reports or detail anything about your coworkers. Keeping your boss/manager in the loop is also part of your job and should not get a lower priority than other stuff.

This only works if you have a good boss and healthy work culture, unfortunately. I've been in this position many times with a few different bosses (thankfully all with the same company, which I've long since left) and after doing this maybe 3 times over the course of a year, I was given a surprise performance review where they called me argumentative and gaslit me into doing even more work to make up for the lazy, entitled coworker who was taking credit for everything. I know it's anecdotal but unfortunately sometimes you do have to find a sneakier way to get the credit that you're due. There are a lot of incompetent managers and dysfunctional jobs out there.

For me not really the first one. The only right way to deal with it is to learn from it and move on. Honestly, this might also not work out depending on the boss. They might confront the other employee and ask why they didn't give credit which might make them ly about it and put you in a bad light. If your boss didn't even see your contribution in the first place they might believe them over you. This one really depends strongly on the situation and personal involved. I personally told people like that in the past no if they asked for help and made sure that they would need to go though official channels to ask for help. I literally got accused of faking my working times and doing nothing while drowning in tasks from all sides. But I was not the one submitting the work, because I was usually involved in the sub-tasks. Busy in multiple departments with managers not planning resources with each other while working 50 to 60 hours on half the salary of other people while also being told I'm not doing enough and accused of time fraud REALLY drained my mental health. Yet, when I was absent I got the blame for things my colleagues didn't get done because they constantly excused their performance with "can't reach him and I can't do it, now I'll do nothing all day until he's back". The company has much less capital than when I started 10 years ago and I'm one of just a few employees who stayed for so long, most people quit after a year for being treated like shit. It still took me a decade to realize I'm actually good enough, after I found out that my supervisor was communicating complete bullshit about me up to HR. Found out when I went to HR directly and applied for a different internal position: We considered you, but your manager told us you'd not be interested. Well great because he never even asked me?!

Oh lord I had a supervisor who did this for YEARS! Finally I lost it and went straight to HR, he spoke to my manager, who later confronted the supervisor about it. Safe to say, it never happened again.

Lol definitely can’t tell the boss they have minimal oversight on day to day work. It’ll be an insult to them as bosses want to think they know everything that’s going on.

If you fill someone's place for one time, don't go straight to your boss and talk behind her in closed doors, that's not a correct advice. You should just talk to your coworker first and tell her that you want credit for your efforts. If she wants your help in the future, tell her that she has to organize a coffee break with all 3 of you and she has to talk about she got your help and how grateful she is. If she refuses, then you can just talk to your boss yourself. Talking behind closed doors before confronting in a nice way just creates drama, trust issues and paranoia among coworkers

When I did this to my boss, he told me that I should stick up for myself more, even though I told him I was trying not to be cocky and brag about all of the things I'm doing. He said I should do that more. Literally the worst manager I ever worked for.

This is very important to learn. It is common that you are not getting credit for the work you did because someone else/senior colleague took credit for it. There is no need to upset, pick the right time, right place, and the "important audience" casually set the record right

Unfortunately most bosses not only do not care (until you leave….), but they will call you whiny, competitive, and lacking team spirit no matter HOW you phrase your words or choose your tone. Not too many good ones out there… never met one myself.

I cc my boss every time I send out my work and in all emails where I discuss/plan my work with others. Yes that leads to a lot of emails but the team and boss are always up to date and learn about the progress organically, so we don't really need to set up meetings. And I find that bosses prefer to be over-informed rather than find out things by surprise. Email traffic is unavoidable.
