The irony of there not being a single actual ugly person in this whole movie..
@haywoodjablowmi1427Ай бұрын
It’s the point of the movie. The beauty standards went so far that extremely attractive people for our standards are considered ugly in their world. This society is so critical of people’s natural faces that anyone who doesn’t get plastic surgery is inherently "ugly" and has to go to live in a neighborhood full of uglies, no exceptions. And the "pretties" are not supposed to look attractive to us, they’re supposed to look uncanny. Edit : I think the issue some people have here is that they’re not separating Hollywood and the source material. The movie needs to have attractive "uglies" to deliver the books’ message. Yes, Hollywood would’ve casted attractive actors regardless of the plot. But this one time, it’s also part of the plot. Yes it’s hypocritical, just like when a big corporation produce a show/movie criticizing big corporations/capitalism. You can criticize Hollywood, without saying that the movie did something wrong by casting non-ugly people. They didn’t not make a mistake. This is not nonsensical to cast attractive actors to play the "uglies". Because this one time, it was the whole point. You can criticize the industry without calling the casting choices a misunderstanding of the plot.
@kreiyuАй бұрын
i think another KZbinr said that the pretty people in the books were supposed to be "inhumanly" pretty. so i think the "uglyness" is supposed to be by comparison. we don't think they are ugly, but by their societal standards, they are. i just don't think the movie portrayed that very well.

@peanut_butter_wizard1213Ай бұрын
The fact that everyone in the comments (and Elvis in the video) is complaining about the actors not being ugly just goes to show how much this movie didnt understand what the book was doing I read the books back in middle school, and the point of the Pretty surgery wasn't to make super ugly people into supermodel versions of themselves. Theres a bit where Tally finds some old-world magazines, and she actively wonders why they had Uglies on the cover, bc the Pretty surgery makes everyone homogeneous, similar skin color to everyone else, scars and birthmarks and other types of identifying features that, according to the people in charge, eliminates a desire for conflict based on physical differences by making eveyone more or less the same Uglies are literally just normal people, and Pretties are uncanny valley copy-paste freaks that everyone in their society has been taught are the ideal way to look and be The movie really needed to make that clear for it to actually work. If they did it right, having all the Uglies be played by, y'know, conventionally atractive Hollywood actors could have easily helped drive the point home The Pretties really, really needed to be more uncanny to actually make the story work, but they dropped the ball
@Wolf_ManJackАй бұрын
This is the argument everyone running defense in the comments actually needs to trot out - they literally aren't 'pretty' in terms of looking physically healthy and hormonally healthy (Which impacts face shape, skin quality, etc.) but rather an unusual 'generically attractive' that people of every race can generally fit into well-enough to make a standard look for the human species. This is done as a social control mechanism by the people who survived what was basically an apocalypse war, creating a stable society of people with actual lesions in their brain who live to be controlled breeders while the few people with power work the cogs of society. To us, they would look not ugly, but freakish in the factory-like nature of their appearances, because they've been reduced to vapid clones of a workable human mold. If everyone looked uncomfortably, oddly similar, like a blend of anime face types moreso than people, the movie could sell exactly why the author - who's actually pretty good by the way, he's written good stuff in general and the books are less vapid than the movie, that's why there's this understated clone-cattle-horror element that you only pick up on once the MC realizes it, when it would be obvious to _us_ - focuses so much on the lush paradise of "Pretty society". It's literally all bread and circuses, made to break people of any _capacity_ for anarchistic elements or free thought, so they slide into the factory production line. Uglies as a franchise is more about covert social control than accepting differences in human beauty, that's moreso the YA angle the author clearly uses to get his books sold, the same way Artemis Fowl is about Lupin The IIIrd as a sociopath interacting with literal magic, but he's a teen boy to sell those paperbacks.

Yes, that’s how it’s in the book. The pretties are supposed to reach uncanny levels of beauty. And typical beauty standards from our times are meant to be ugly.
@Wolf_ManJackАй бұрын
The "Pretties" are dumbed-down breeding fodder to keep humanity going while people at the top of the hierarchy keep society stable, this is a lot more clear if you've read the later books. Pretties are inundated with luxury from the moment of their surgery, making them too _docile_ to question authority, and given brain damage to intensify their feelings of pleasure and their discomfort towards breaking the rules. The MC actually comments upon it a few times, it's like everything around her feels _wonderful_ and _exciting_ but she can't string two thoughts together or really imagine why she'd want to not be a part of the system. It's a very explicit mind-control paradigm framed as entrance to a perfect adolescence, which is the grander conceit of the actual story; hiding the ugliness of the _world_ from people so they won't attempt to do anything about it. The Specials are mutant super-soldiers modified to act as combat agents because by that point in their lives, they've bought into the system and don't get any cognitive dissonance from realizing they can suddenly _think_ again and are wetworks agents for a fucking Illuminati government. The "beauty standards! gross!" angle is mostly there as a YA thing to help sell the books from what I can tell, the author puts a lot more passion into the world-building than he does into that theme.

"Conventionally attractive" means white, skinny and no scars on your face. It's a pretty low bar actually. Joey King is not attractive, at all.

Fun fact, the scene where she's sneaking into party with the pretties was filmed at the Atlanta Botanical gardens. I've been there multiple times and it's literally the only cool thing ab this movie. 😂

I had a high school english class that forced me to read the book this movie was based on for an assignment, and I'd completely forgotten about it until I saw this video in the recommendations, so this was a pretty crazy thing to see again. Too bad I only remember bits and pieces of the story so I can't compare the two that well, but I can say I think making a movie adaptation already misses the point by directly showing us what peoples' faces look like. A book leaves it more up to our imagination, I feel.

I feel really bad for Joey King, because I feel like most people know her from the mediocre to terrible Netflix films she’s been in, and not any of her other stuff. She was The Prince in Bullet Train and Fred in Hamster and Gretel, and she’s really good in both of those! She just has the unfortunate luck of being in more projects that have bad writing than ones that are good, and I hope she gets more really good films to be in soon.
@emstink28 күн бұрын
She was executive producer for this! That means she had to have greenlit the script at every step of the way... At this point, it's not luck, maybe she just likes terrible writing lol!

The movie was filmed in 2021, and was shelves for 3 years before finally getting released. And even if the movie were released in 2022, it would will be about 10 years too late to adapt this 2005 dystopian novel as the book’s fanbase has long since moved on. If this movie wanted to be successful it should have come out in 2009.

This movie rips off a classic Twilight Zone episode. In it a girl lives in a society where everybody gets an operation at the age of 18 where they are forced to pick a new body where there are limited models. She resists the whole episode until she finally gives in and after conforms with society liking her new body.
@emstink28 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure the original author addressed this because loads of people said this when he released the books - he said he saw the episode but he "totally forgot it" by the time of writing... _If_ true, it's amazing what the subconscious can remember.

Why can't we have a movie where the world is already filled with gorgeous stunning people and then somebody's like "Screw that" and decides to intentionally make them ugly to get a view of what it's like to be different from everyone who visually all dresses and looks the same? A role reversal of the "makeup transformation" where somebody accepts on being a freak and is happy to be alone? Just a thought.
