hi, I dont know if you will read is commnet but I hope so as im woundeing what your thoughts are these fast track bricklaying course thay do, tha can but up to 10 odd weeks long. do you think there any good or worth doing ? do you know anyone whos done one and thay said it was terrible or thay were still unstless at it. ? is an apreticship still the only way to learn ? any feed back would be good. thanks
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
steve green . Hi Steve an apprenticeship is the best way but not that easy to get onto and definitely not as good as they were back when I did mine ! Ive never done a fast track course or know anybody who has . I’m sure they are worth while to get the basics , then the hard part is getting experience and practice . It is a tough job but very rewarding , once you have the basics it’s all about repetition and practice . Check out Rob Songer on you tube , he is a top bricky and also taught bricklaying so has a few tutorials on his channel . Hope this helps , good luck and thanks for the question and for checking out our channel 👍🏼

A very professional job well executed. Not being a bricklayer, I don't know the name of the style, but I like the course of headers - breaks the regularity.
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul the bond is called English garden wall bond .The headers are mainly for strength but do add character to a wall . English bond is similar but has headers on alternate courses whereas english garden wall bond is every 3,5 or 7 hope that makes sense. thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏽

Hey great work, very neat. I'm a decorator by trade. I'm 25 and been doing it since I was 16. I'm looking into buying a house going to build a front porch and patio round the back. Would a 4 week intense brick laying course get me in good stead. 5 days a week for a month. My brother is a builder and will help me out. Please let me know if I would be capable of doing the work required or to get a team of lads to do it. I do have some building knowledge.
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
dixie normous Hi pal thanks for the comment. Having some knowledge to begin with helps . The course your talking about sounds ok . I always say learning bricklaying is like driving , you pass your test then spend the next few years actually learning to drive . I would say see how confident you feel after the course . If you feel your ready and competent then go for it , if your not sure get someone in but muck in with them and pick up tips that way . It’s all about watching how it’s done then practice, practice, practice . Hope that helped . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼

@lincordery25064 жыл бұрын
steve how do you work out materials you need ie bricks blocks sand cemenmt etc etc
@SteveAndAlexBuild4 жыл бұрын
Lin Cordery Hi, bricks are a specific size so it can all be done by measurement. Divide the length by 215 mm for how many brick long , then height divided by 75mm for how many high then times it together. Also if you calculate the square metres in the wall you times by 60 as there are 60 metric bricks to a square metre ( 56 imperial brick (73 mm )). Hope that makes sense . We could probably make a whole video about this 😳🧱👍🏽
@neilcrawford83036 жыл бұрын
Using an OX trowel, not a Marshalltown! Such anarchy. It's only when you see your new wall, that you realise how bad the old wall looked. Was the course of headers purely aesthetetic, or for structural reasons, to tie the wall together? Visited Port Sunlight recently. The brickwork there is just stunning.
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
Neil Crawford . Port sunlight ...... built before price work ! The headers are there for both , to tie the wall together and to match all the surrounding walls . As for the trowel you may notice the bloody end fell off ! Ox have clocked it and are sending me a replacement for free ! 🤗. Thanks for watching and commenting pal👍🏼
@neilcrawford83036 жыл бұрын
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex I noticed another comment, possibly on another of your videos that Ox offered you a replacement trowel and that they've modified the design. Good of them to offer. In my last year at school we did day release to Nescot (Ewell tech). Mornings were brickwork, afternoon was plumbing and heating inc leadwork. I chose plumbing, but I've always appreciated good brick and masonry work. I like Giles Gilbert Scott's work. Battersea Power Station, the now demolished Guinness plant at Park Royal etc. All the best to you gents.

Dumb question but what's the difference between an engineering brick and a 'normal' brick?
@TheTraditionalGolfer6 жыл бұрын
Engineering bricks are a class A normally used below DPC alot tougher and more durable to water and frost....facings are usually abit softer..not always but generally. Yrs ago engineerings were used alot above dpc for face work they still do on occasion like the lads have done here and with the old copings ties in a treat 👌
@Carl-yu6uw6 жыл бұрын
Wayne Leone How dense they (engineering) are and therefore their strength and their lower permeability to water.
@TheTraditionalGolfer6 жыл бұрын
They have done a lovely job of these because there a difficult brick to lay bring so square and sharp if you not spot in they can make you look like a nob.....acid soon sorts the little marks out a treat we sometimes use abit of diesel on some hessian if we have some kicking about site.

If I was doing a mix 4:1 or 5:1 how many bags of sand is that per mix?
@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
Wazzy Skillz . It depends on the bags . Most are 25 kg and cement is 25 kg so it’s 4 bags of building sand to a full bag of cement ( we put an extra half bag of and in ) always put your water first , plasticiser then a bag of sand. Next all the cement then add the rest of your sand and water gradually . Hope that makes sense ? Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽

@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
EmiLy SaNdRa 10273 No probation. We use 4 parts building sand to 1 part cement . Always use plasticiser too 🧱👍🏼

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex there going last long time then. Did you acid wash them after ? So hard to keep them clean
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
Kieren Standen . Yes mate , went back about 4 days later to give it a good scrub with brick acid , it really brought it up nice 👍🏼
@kierenboimufc59406 жыл бұрын
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex yeah spose as there not a porous brick the acid can sit on the surface and do its job better over wise you have to soak the wall don’t you
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
Kieren Standen . True , l always wet the wall and dilute the acid and just scrub till it comes clean . I only use acid neat for really bad stains and cleaning my tools occasionally .

Is it a good idea to seal the bricks and sandstone with a sealer ? Thanks.
@SteveAndAlexBuild6 жыл бұрын
august You could do ,it won’t do any harm but the wall would be fine as it is . The sealers sometimes put a bit of a sheen on the wall so it’s down to personal preference really . Thanks for watching and commenting pal 👍🏼

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex I know sometimes things can't be saved but in America we so hell bent on tearing down and rebuilding .We lost so much of history to parking lots and strip malls .

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex I have been following Sergei eryshev for a number of years on KZbin, absolutely top class bricklayer . He uses methods that you may not be familiar with but the work he leaves behind is class A .
