Considering how Dominaria got completely busted by a slow invasion and apparently every other plane survived a frontal assault, it's looking more and more that Phyrexia is not all that powerful and that Dominaria is just kinda weak and less united in comparison. A reverse overlay is such a good way to deal with it. There's nobody on New Phyrexia that could have seen it coming, because nobody there existed at the time of the original overlay. That said... there's just too much to tell in so little time and space. Angels and Kaya on Theros? A whole chapter in a couple lines. Of course she can kill anything 1 on 1, that's what she does, that's her gimmick, but HOW? If she can force Ajani to retreat, can't Ajani mirror her and force her to retreat as well? Angels coming to planes and meeting whatever is there? Another chapter in a couple lines. They mention planes that hate angels, and that would have been so nice to see. Angels on Tarkir and people going "What now? Whatever! Keep shooting!" Angels on Innistrad and Sigarda going "I'm sure you folks can explain it later. Chaaarge!" And we see none of it. Nissa coming back again and again with an infinite life pool fits pretty well, but getting Vraska's inner monologue and none of hers while she slaughters millions and holds off half of the gatewatch for three whole chapters? How the hell can Zendikar stop Nahiri once she starts compleating the hedrons? Wtf is Sorin doing after all, if he knows for a fact what Phyrexia is and how it works? Where the f did Jace go, conveniently removed so Elspeth, Teferi, and Karn can have their moment? At least 4 more missing chapters. Too many things to account for... It's clear that Wizards bit way way more than it could chew this time. They have enough lore for a whole book series there, and they'll just casually leave it all hanging in "potential inconcistency" land. :/

Yeah it makes no sense how you can kill a being made with faith by cutting it's throat. Elspeth needed a special weapon from Heliod AND a whole block of preparation to kill one newly born god.
@MGmirkin Жыл бұрын
Well, given the faithful were being slaughtered or compleated, and in either case losing "faith" (due to death or compleation making them view gods a false or unworthy of adoration/faith), Helios was likely in a severely weakened state. The fact that Helios was compleated probably caused the "faithful" to "lose faith" now that he was basically evil and no longer their protector. In that case I'd probably immediately cease worshipping him too. At which point his power goes from infinite to nil REALLY fast, about like flipping a light switch, IMO. ;) So, there's a plausible case for it... Once the "faith" dries up, his power source is basically gone.

Honestly that works for most, if not all, of the Praetors. Urabrask refused unity and sowed dissension - and was torn apart for it. Jin-Gitaxias falls prey to his own experiments. So, Just going to vent. The main story was extremely poorly written while , curiously, most of the side stories were quite enjoyable. It feels almost offensive to compare stories like Jenna Helland’s “Rankle Master of Love “, Alison Lührs “Ravnica One and the Same” or even Seanan McGuire's "Family Game Night" (to cite a couple) with the main story, especially the last three chapters. Anti-climatic resolutions ,characters that actively become less interesting and more flat as the story progresses (with Elesh and Elspeth being hit the hardest) , tired tropes galore (the “we are not so different after all” had me litteraly stop in disbelief ) , whole characters whose omission actively undermines the whole story (Garruk could have been a fair counterpoint to Vorinclex for example; Kasmina and her shadowy cabal of planeswalkers failing to intervene during what is supposedly a universe shattering event ; Ashiok , Narset, Oko, Sarkhan and many more being complete no shows etc) ,narrative arcs snipped in favor of a rushed ending , a generally flat and uninteresting prose : I struggle to believe that the whole saga wasn’t written in a not particularly inspired afternoon. I'm not familiar with K.Rivera's other works, but I must assume she can do better than this and that there must have been factors outside her control that led to this. This all to say nothing of the strong disconnection between the story as told on the site and the one told on the cards, underlining what seems to be miscomunication between the R&D departmente and the story department. Here’s hoping that the aftermath set and the actual planes can carry the weight of the story by showing actually intriguing and well written consequences, because the characters in the main plot surely couldn’t. If there's something that can still make the story of the game interesting , to me this will surely be the planes themselves , the setting and the many interconnecting bits of lore and history that build up to living, immaginative worlds. Character-centered storytelling seems to be out of WotC's grasp , save for a few rare exceptions That said, it takes a real talented narrator to work with this material. Nice job !

This is the first Magic set that I skip most of the lore videos, the pattern is painfully clear from the first a few videos: Phyrexians invade a plane, local heroes stop them, and some legendaries got complated. Phyrexians seem way lamer than Nicol Bolas, failing to conquer even a single plane. They're so bad they almost seem like underdogs, with heroes from across the multiverse ganging up on them. And, of course, once Elesh Norn is defeated, everything just stops - the classic way to wrap up a conflict. Phyrexians used to be about subtly corrupting planes with a few drops of oil or infecting a planeswalker with a small cut, but now they're just a mindless zombie horde that can't get anything done. They're even worse than regular zombies

I think it would have been cool to see characters with more connections and past history kill the big bad guys of mtg. Like maybe Kaya teaches some of the theros heroes how to use spirit blades and they're the ones who kill Heliod while she's the one who offs Vorinclex. It would fit her fight against the praetor from Kaldheim where she failed to prevent him from taking the sap of the world tree. Kaito could've killed Jin too, maybe even with Nashi? It would have felt a bit more cathartic to have characters to whom these villains were relevant kill them. Or have all the praetors die by being too intense in what their vision of New Phyrexia is. Like Urabrask died because he wanted to be too free from others. Sheoldred died because she wanted to be too above others. Elesh Norn died because she wanted to unify others too much. Jin could've died in his own experiments to try and perfect himself(Maybe trying to harvest a planeswalker spark for himself?). And Vorinclex could've gone to Ikoria after hearing there are uncorruptible monsters there to prove his superiority above all other hunters and died in an insane fight there. Just ideas.

So, Phyrexia goes out with a bit of a whimper? Basically overrun by the charge of a single plane [Zhalfir] (or maybe the other planes that beat back New Phyrexia came backtracking via portals/Realmbreaker, too, to Mirrodin/New Phyrexia)? What now? New Phyrexia is "lost to time/space" but not actually, per se, gone/defeated. Just ... missing. So, what next? Is that the final end of Phyrexia, or will the "oil" from various Phyrexian invaders corrupt or gain a foothold on other planes and start New New Phyrexia(s) all over the multiverse (a more pervasive problem?), making the banishment of "[now] Old New Phyrexia" a moot point? Like, just a drop of the stuff from Karn's boot or whatever was enough to corrupt all of Mirrodin (over time). So, now that it's essentially been spread by invaders all over the multiverse, isn't it an even bigger problem? Like won't it corrupt the entire multiverse all over again, from within? Unless some actual "cure" / "antigen" / "vaccine" can finally wipe it out completely everywhere?
@MGmirkin Жыл бұрын
But, not all worlds "beat" New Phyrexia's invasions, right? I mean, some fell and were wiped out, right? If so, which ones? Were those planes "compleated" in essence? Are those planes now fully Phyrexianized, even if Realmbreaker has "retreated" from them, leaving again stranded pocket dimensions / planes of "New New Phyrexias"? Surely this isn't the final, final end of the story, if Phyrexia wasn't *fully* vanquished across the *entire* multiverse, and all traces of corrupting glistening oil wiped out "compleatly"... :P

The way the preators fell and the planeswalkers got restored was very G.I. Joe/Hasbro writing. Just plain and all “matter of fact” like. Not to upset Ajani or Nissa fans, but if I had to prepare myself to say goodbye to Tamiyo and Nahiri before the set started, WOTC could have written something more captivating and consequential by killing off the formerly mentioned planeswalkers.

I'm sorry but this story felt super rushed, Mirrodin had 3 sets for a long drawn out war story that felt something. March of the Machine gets 1. Yes there was Dominaria and All will be One but those felt like the warm Up and definitely got it's due, MOM should have been way more drawn out, like the Lord of the Rings. Idk maybe its me but DOM and ONE felt like Fellowship, and MOM felt like they crammed The Two Towers and Return of the King into 1 story and NOTHING had a chance to fully develop. Chandra avenging Jaya? Nahiri doing anything? Other worlds seemed like their invasions kinda come and gone like the invasion of the Shire or the battle for Isengard, it just over as fast as it begins. Hell you said it yourself the Preator's death were super par and lackluster. There was so much potential for this super war and it seems like its already over, like we sat down for the beginning of the movie, left in the middle to to go to bathroom or get more popcorn, come back and we are in the final act and we missed alot of the middle. Again could have been just me, just I feel the story did not live up to the hype. Honestly I think your storytelling is probably the only thing saving this for me before I completely reeeeeeeeeee but I guess this me already doing that 😅. Just venting, not trying to argue, would to discuss things if I am wrong or misguided lol. Keep up the good work!

I think the greatest mystery behind all this, at least for me, will be why WotC stopped caring about their fanbase. 15 years of build-up thrown out a Deus es Machina window. All for the sake of saturating their product with reprints, overpriced premium products, and reflavored recycled mechanics. There have been more sets released in the last 2 years than than the 5 years before that combined. WotC has deliberately shifted to a "quantity over quality" policy and expect their fans to keep up or phase out. Reluctantly, I don't have the patience or willingness for disappointment for this story and card game. For me, at least, I think it best to follow suit of Phyrexia and leave this multiverse behind... their story is compleated, as is my partaking in this story.

First off, thank you for the vids! I had hoped Emrakul would come into contact with the Phyrexians and the Planeswalkers of the story basically are the guy from Godzilla 2014 going “let them fight.” Mtg’s Adolf Hitler vs their Lovecraftian primeval force of nature. Could’ve used the opportunity provided by the destruction as a semi-timeline reset. Kill old Planeswalkers, provides a climactic finale as source material to their supposed Netflix TV show. Who knows? Maybe we would’ve even gotten to see a compleated Eldrazi. Pay 30 colorless phyrexian mana for Emrakul, Phyrexia incarnate. Really thought they were initially hinting going in that direction after Tamiyo got compleated and they released the recent remastered innistrad set in Arena. Could’ve still included Wrenn melding with Realmbreaker, the final battle could’ve been her against Emrakul. Whatever, RIP my Phyrexian dommy mommy. Thanks again for the great videos!
@DreamDaddie Жыл бұрын
Probably one of the most rushed story endings I’ve ever seen. The war against the original Phyrexians lead by Yawgmoth took several sets and many years to finish. But after waiting more than a decade for the main characters to even acknowledge the New Phyrexian threat after just a few sets and a couple years its over? I’m kind of disappointed.
@lordlantern599 Жыл бұрын
For such a massive and what should have been, pivotal moment in the lore for the entire game I mean think about it, we've spent nearly THIRTY *YEARS* building up for the moment where the Phyrexians would invade... somthing, everyone assumed it would be one or two planes... but the idea of March of the Machine was such a cool and interesting idea. And I am devastated that the Phyrexians lost so pathetically, I would've been fine with this outcome if it had not been for: A. All of the Oil outside of Phyrexia being Deus Ex Machina'd out of the Multiverse REALLY kills any threat of compleation for everyone exept some poor bastard who was unfortunate enough to not make their way through the portal Wrenn made B. Having 95% of the important characters that actually, mattered being revived because... reasons... So as a result really the ONLY threat remaining is the Eldrazi and even then, Kozilek and Ulamog at at *BEST* floating around in the Blind Eternities and at worst completely dead while Emrakul is still sealed in Innestad's moon... so now Wizards has pretty much written themselves into a corner where there's no real big threat anymore... Good Job Wizards! In ONE set, All will be *none important!*
@STS-qi1qy Жыл бұрын
My guess is that, the noticeably absent, Jace will end up the new Phyrexian 'broadcaster' using his mind powers to communicate with the oil but the reach will be limited to whichever plane he is on at the time. That way they can have him pop up whenever they want a Phyrexian threat on any given plane without keeping the Phyrexians at 'multiverse ending threat' levels. I'm also willing to bet that Realmbreaker's portals are going to stay open and connect certain planes to each other allowing for interplanar exchange (and conflict)

1. I agree the praetors deserved a little more. Maybe another chapter or so to really allow them to really show off and meet their end. Heliod's fight should have also have been expanded on. There are other theros planeswalkers who could have dealt with him or aided Kaya. 2. Norn's death was perfect. Unmade by the father of machines. Excellent. 3. When Ajani showed up, I felt my heart sank. It seemed like this would be the end of him. It put me at ease when he was captured. Great narration as always. I look forward to your last chapter video.

I was actually getting engaged in the MtG story again for once... and then of course they rushed everything to an underwhelming conclusion, probably because a part of the lore that could have covered at least one year of new sets was pressed into a couple of months I guess to follow WotC crazy release schedule.
