Two things amaze me about this video: 1) There are some real classic arcade games that John hasn't even heard of! "Buggy Boy" in this and, even more amazingly, "Shadow Dancer" in the Galloping Ghost video. 2) I say this as a Brit; do not, under _any_ circumstances, listen to John's "British" accent, it makes Dick Van Dyke's sound totally legit.
@Johnsarcade6 жыл бұрын

Regarding the mega tech machine. It's essentially a modified mark 1 megadrive that uses the external din connector (not the ext edge connector) for timer control for arcade operations. There's 8 cartridge ports which you can install various selection of megadrive and master system games. The hardware was tweaked to disallow cheaper retail Mega Drive games to be played on the system, and likewise, Mega-Tech games will not run properly on a home Mega Drive console. Also uses Japanese mould for the cartridge. There is however a adapter you can buy to use retail carts on the arcade hardware.
@electronash6 жыл бұрын
Sionyn Jones I still have a faulty Mega Tech board in the wardrobe. I tried to repair it a few years ago, by replacing practically every logic IC, but it refused to live. From the start, I suspected that one of the Sega custom ICs was faulty, which is on the Mega Drive side. Only problem is - that custom chip is only used on the earlier model Japanese Mega Drive or Genesis, so I bought a US one, but it had a newer revision motherboard inside which didn't have that chip. sigh So, I gave up on spending any more money on trying to repair the MT, and the original cabinet got converted to use Hyperspin. (but luckily keeping both of the original CRT monitors, using some VGA to CGA converters.) To answer Alex and John's question (and second what you said), the Mega Tech carts use a different pinout to the MD / Genny carts, but the same physical connector. The carts contain both an 8-bit and 16-bit ROM (for the SMS and MD sides), so you need an adapter to play standard MD / Gen carts. IIRC, there is a standard ROM image that people use for the SMS ROM on the adapter boards. That allows the SMS to boot, which in turn allows the MD / Gen cart to boot.
@electronash6 жыл бұрын
Sionyn Jones So yep, the Mega Tech is essentially a standard (but early) MD and SMS on one board, where the SMS displays the instructions for each game, and I believe can also control which of the 8 cart slots to boot from. (as well as just having a countdown timer option which auto-switches cart slots.) Quite an interesting system really. I might still keep an eye out for another early MD / Gen, but it would help if the sellers weren't so hesitant to lift the lid so I can confirm that it has the appropriate chip before buying. (To be fair though, the metal EMI shielding in the Mega Drive is razor sharp. I found out just how sharp when I went to wipe some dust off of the cart connector once. lol)

Most countries in europe had a few cabinet manufacturers. Like electrocoin in the UK, in Germany you had Hellomat etc etc. Here in Spain there where I think 4,5 manufacturers. They just installed the jamma or original boards. Shipping only the boards and making the cabs here was much cheaper than importing the whole cabinet from the USA or Japan. Some operators had the original cab, but they are very rare.

Great video John. I noticed a comment at 26:05 saying that Rad Mobile was released after the Sonic game, "obviously", but that is in fact not the case. The first Sonic The Hedgehog game was first released on June 23, 1991 on the Megadrive in Japan, but Rad Mobile was actually released months before, in January 1991. This means that Sonic's first appearance in a game was as the mirror ornament in Rad Mobile. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rad_Mobile#Cameos

"Oh...oh...oh..." *chuckles* Several nights ago, I was walking through Wal-Mart and saw a very similar model of your broken pop-corn maker. Thought to myself that John might be very interested in knowing about those. (Logic following that if one branch has these, surely they all must.) One difference was this one had a matching stand that allowed for storage of supplies. Could also free up that limited table space...and deal with that wobbly table issue. I suppose that $99 is a good price for one of those. I can't seem to find it on their web site, though. Even though they have a ton of similar models for all kinds of prices. Then, I just totally forgot to pop in and post about them. Until I started up this video and went...well...the first sentence of this posting. ;P Many years ago, a local arcade had that StarBlade cabinet. Really awesome game. But, they've got to be rare. Such huge machines that aren't as friendly in the square footage as most. The atmosphere and FX really complete it. As there is a PlayStation port. (Kind of rare.) It just feels a bit hollow without the extras of the arcade counterpart. 'Chip shop'. That's rather catchy, actually.

FYI, the rarest Capcom pinball isn't Big Bang Bar, even before the repro run. There were roughly 13 BBB before the repro. Capcom's Kingpin is currently the rarest at around only 4 in existence. I belive that Chicago Coin is planning also remaking this game as well. There is usually one at Califronia Extreme every year.

Definitely champion pub is an unrated game would love one anybody got one. Some of the DIY shops in the UK can analyse your paint and make you a paint mix, or a paint suppliers could analyse it with their machine and make the colour you need? Or like me I could just mix the paints and make the right colour, or find somebody who works in body shop they should be able to make the colour for you. No you want celery salt on your Scotch egg with a bit of white pepper! You have Creme De La Creme of eggs. You were right outside M&S they do a runny yolk Scotch egg? You have to make your own John. Why don't you just bolt your door hinge on the top back to the door? The holes look a bit big so put some washers behind

Spyhunter sitdown is an awesome game. The first game I played that was two quarters. And I loved it. No way is the game too bloody hard. It has a learning curve no doubt, and getting used to the amount of controls. If the controls are working properly, you can develop gameplay to last for quite awhile. And the music gets better the longer you play on one credit.
@SionynJones6 жыл бұрын
Regarding the switch mode power supply replacement. Go for it. They're just better power supplies period compared to liner power supply. The only caveat is but a decent switching supply. Switch mode power supplies by there nature generate high-frequency noise that can interfere with sensitive electronic equipment, but as long as it decent supply it will suppress it properly. Just be careful.
