99% of people in the UK are driving on summer tyres, summer tyres harden at temperatures below 7C. At night time in the UK it's below 7C for at least half the year. Most people in the UK would be better off using something like Michelin CrossClimate tyres.

I don't think we get snow often enough for people to learn how to drive in it properly. I was very impressed with my car last time it snowed badly though. I live on a hill and the road was blocked by stuck drivers, so had to go up an adjacent steeper road - but car went straight up past all the stuck FWD cars - a Golf, an Astra. And I don't have an XC90 but in fact a twenty-two year old RWD car.

Unfortunately I don't think it is just a simple case of winter tyers .the amount of people who come sliding past my old house with there foot fully on the break with the steering fully locked over bouncing off everything in there path was unbelievable .top tip for snow (apart from winter tyers is remembering that locked up wheels dont stear lol low gear lots of concentration and a bit of driving knowledge goes a long way on snow .

Introduce a scrapage scheme for FWD cars. Buy a car with the engine in the back, fit winter tyres on the front and moulded slicks on the rear. Rev it to 8500-10,000rpm and hope people move out of the way. If its got a pair of webbers they will hear you coming from miles away no problem😊

I lived on Maples St at the tme and spent most f the week driving other peoples cars up the hill. Then I moved t Thurgaton and it didn't get much better. I also seem to remember losing a friend out of the back of my LDV trying to get the required speed to get to the top of Rossington - my mate was leaning against the back doors when we hit the speed-bump and went airborne. Been better this year though!

This is why I refuse to drive in the snow. No matter how careful you are, sooner or later some idiot with summer tyres and a heavy foot will come sliding into you even if you're stationary. Then again, as a pedestrian I had to dive out of the way when an out of control car mounted the pavement.

Wouldn’t it be nice if cars had “skates.” That could prevent many car crashes during slipper ice conditions on the road. It’s the same car, with all the same gears and stuff except it has been upgraded to store very thick and very durable metal alloy metal that slides down and makes contact with ice when a car’s wheels begin to lose traction with the road surface. When they are not need the thick pieces of metal are stored inside the car around the wheels of the car. When the car begins moving on ice and begins to slide and lose control, several slits (opening specially for the metal slices) around each wheal of the car are opened allowed the metal pieces to drop down and make contact with the slippery ice. The driver then turns the stirring wheel and in doing so turns the wheels of the car, which in turn turns the sharp and thick pieces of metal in the direction you want to steer the car. Around each wheel of the car you can place two slits at the side that, if opened, can allow metal slits at each side (left and right) to slide down (upon sensing car’s tires losing traction against ice) and give the driver a slightly better side to side manouverability. You can also place two slits in the front and back of a tire, that if opened, can bring the car, eventually, to a stop…just like a hockey player speeding up can stop suddenly on ice by turning sideways (turning his feet and body sideways) and scraping the think blades of his skates on the ice “sideways” to produce more friction and traction with the ice. If a car’s had special openings (slits) around a tire and its inner metal axal that stored special very tough and durable blades like those of a skating blade of a hockey play then in an emergency (like a cars tire losing traction against road surface and starting to lose control and slide) the driver could by some mechanism activate an “emergency brake stop” [like that of an emergency handle pull stop of a train] by, example, pressing a button that would cause sharp and durable, blade skates-like, metal to drop drop from the opening and make contact with the ice. These sharp and durable skate-like blades around [but not touching] each tire/wheel of the car would hit the ice with enough force to cause the car to make bring it to a faster stop (as opposed t stopping by itself without ice-like skates and with less traction).

These roads are almost clear. People just need to learn how to drive. Although that skill may be out of reach for most people.
@keithnewton89819 жыл бұрын
people need to get winter tyres or 4 season Tyre for some reason UK cars only come with summer tyres. Next people do not know how to drive in these conditions they are stupid and our driving test should have a whole section on this use the highest gear you can without stalling to get moving do not use first try 3rd gear to start moving keep the revs low to reduce wheel spin if wheels spin try higher gear do not just floor it. drive slower give yourself more space do not worry about being late. give yourself more time do not just look at the car in front watch the cars in front of the vehicle in from of you turn traction control off if your car tells you known your car read the hand book its there to help you. they tell you what setting to have your are in. as cars get more electronics know how they work. some drivers aids do not work in snow and ice so do what the book tells you. rear wheel drive is not worse its the tyres you are using. these fat wide low profile summer tyres are no good in winter change your Tyre from the 1 of October to the end of March.
@keithnewton89819 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse I understand what your saying but winter tyre are not just for snow,they work better in the cold, they are better in the rain. May be because I have friends and family in Germany that I have got use the the winter tyres.plus tyres are cheaper in continental Europe a lot cheaper.
@keithnewton89819 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse UK car do not come with all season tyres they come fit with summer tyres period. Plus it been law to swap tyres in Germany since the 1970 summer tyres March to end September and winter from October to march. If not your insurance will not pay out in an accident. Most modern UK cars are fit with the new reduced friction or energy savers which are not very good in cold wet weather and are useless in snow or slush.
@victhaking31589 жыл бұрын
+keith Newton agree with most of this but not "rear wheel drive is not worse", on a front engined car anyway
