@@mrD-dv7rp I bet It will have 79 (3) in the column to the right on the A line, indicating that it is a tricycle license that you receive alongside your car license. Due to the age of your lcience you can indeed ride a 50cc scooter but that is it. Hope that helps

Back in my day, I took my part 1, rode with L plates on a 125 for a couple of years, took my part 2 and could then ride anything. Now I'm confused as to how you can pass a test on a 650 without a licence. I think I'm beginning to understand why old people are so grumpy!

I “failed” my CBT. The person examining me was being examined himself. Because I was using their bike, which they’d only bought the day before (some old as MT5 kinda bike, don’t remember the make or model) the guy actually said to me to please be careful I don’t go over 30 because when he rode it home yesterday it was getting up to 50mph. Obviously a moped is only allowed to go 30. so I’m driving along at exactly 30 on my speedo. He tells me to increase my speed to 30. So I go up to 35. He says again to increase my speed to 30. So I go up to 40. He says again can I go up to 30 so I get up to 45. When we got back to the test centre he regrettably informed me I was too hesitant and slow and he couldn’t issue me a certificate that day. I was absolutely fuming, but didn’t call him out in front of the person examining him. As soon as we were alone I pulled him to one side. Told him I was doing 30, 35, 40, 45. I could see the panic on his face. He’d let me do my CBT on an illegal bike, even if it wasn’t as fast as he thought the speedo was well out. He thanked me for not saying anything, told me to come back tomorrow and we’d get it sorted within an hour. When I arrived my certificate was written out waiting for me. I didn’t even get back on a bike. I just walked out with my certificate. Buzzing. By the time I got home there was 3 inches of freshly laid snow. Didn’t stop me tho. Had my little AR50 waiting and nothing was stopping me. Freedom was now mine. It did piss me off a year later as I had to wait an extra day for my full years no claims to insure my new chesterfield rs125 I had sat waiting to go.

So Glad that I did my test when I did. I had 2 days training and my test on the 3rd day. 7th, 9th and 11th of Jan 2013. These laws came into effect on the 19th January 2013 1 week from when I did my test. CBT at 16, went in to for full license at 17 and half; passed and got my 600cc at 19 and half. It was so simple. CBT -> Theory -> Full bike test -> ride any bike up to 33 kw or 250cc -> after 2 years ride any size bike you want with no restrictions. I remember my instructor warning me just before I left to do my Mod 2 "just remember if you fail this, you can't do it again until you're 24!" as if I didn't have enough pressure on my own back of losing £900 if I failed 😂

Good explanations as ever with what seems at first like mind-boggling complexity explained nicely. For anyone wondering at what point they should get an A class test-suitable bike, don't forget that for the DAS (>24 years) courses, the schools will supply the appropriate larger machines for both the training and Mod1/2 examination tests. You may even have a choice of say engine size and variations of seat height so ask about this in advance. Cost is quite high (typically £700-£1500 depending on course length [could be 3-6 days] and your experience) but look for recommendations and ask questions. Don't just pick the nearest one before you decide which organisation is right for you. I believe that for new or returning older riders the intensive DAS courses with strong instructor supervision (often by ex-police riders) and plenty of varied road miles are well worth the money.

So glad to be in the US lol. I started on a 750 from the 80’s I turned into a café. The process was: 1: Go get permit - Pass a 25 question test with 80% and pay a $9 fee. 2: Take a riding skills test on your own motorcycle. And just like that, you have your full unrestricted license* *There are 3 tiers of license though depending on the size of bike you tested on. Testing on a 250cc or less only allows you to ride a bike up to that size. Up to 600cc is the second one. Test on something bigger and you’re cleared to ride anything you want. So easy. Dangerous? Yeah. But at least it’s your own choice if you want to go the safe route or not. I definitely went the safe route with a motorcycle safety course and started on a bike with only like 60hp. But what else would you expect from the land of guns and no-license-or-training-required powered paragliding? Lol. It’s up to you if you wanna be safe or you wanna be stupid. Nobody is gonna force you to be safe.

So different in the UK vs the US. For NY, you take a 20-question multiple choice test, and get a learners permit to ride literally anything you want, provided you're within 1/4mi of a licensed rider. After "sufficient experience" has been obtained, go take a 20 minute road test, and you get your full license. To be fair, my experience is as a car driver getting a motorcycle endorsement... if this is your first license period, things are slightly harder.

Thanks, this video really helped me understand the obtuse British rules! Suggestions for next time: Define "pillion" as a passenger on your bike. Mention that you need a provisional license before you can get your CBT unless you already have another driver's license. Don't assume everyone is under 24 and include a suggestion to "skip to 5:26 (or whatever)" if you're over the age of 24, etc.

Hi spicy thank you for that explanation on the licenses it was very easy to follow the way the progression works in this video the only thing we have is if you are under 21 you have restrictions but after that it’s balls to the wall take the 3 day class and go out a get 1000+ CC bike and let it rip and that is what I did! My first bike was a 2006 Triumph sprint 1050cc bike and loved it so much but looking back on it probably was not the best thing to start off on and in my opinion one of the ugliest bikes you could get.

Thanks for the explanation, heard so many clips about it in your other videos but w/o much context it's really hard to wrap your head around. It's a really complex system there. I'm from the US, so obviously I have some bias, but I think that system is overly cautious. I completely understand not wanting brand new people to have a 1000 bike, but I think the intervals are too long and too many levels. I feel like the 50cc scooter thing should be ended, 50cc on many public roads are straight up dangerous, cause massive road rage in anything but down-town city. I think they should just nix the 50cc bit and at 16 your CBT should allow you to have a 125 for 2 years. Then on the other side, having to wait until you're 24 is too long.

I got a cbt at 16, A1 at 17, A2 at 19 and A at 21... From what I remember.. you can take cbt before theory for upgrading licence, you don’t need to do a cbt if you have an A1 licence to upgrade to an A2, you just need theory mod1 and mod 2. And no theory was needed to upgrade from A2 to full A licence... things might have changed recently but I’m only now 23 so wasn’t that long ago
@spicy110
@spicy110 5 жыл бұрын
You would be correct but that is the most expensive option, If money isn't an issue sure. For most 16-19yr olds money will be a very big factor. 1 x CBT 1 x theory 3 x mod 1 3 x mod 2 4 x training + bike rental My best suggestion was CBT at 17 and skipping the A1 1x CBT 1x theory 2x mod 1 2x mod 2 3 x training + rental One less bike (no 50cc as i suggest waiting for a 125cc) One less test and training + rental. This also gives you A2 at 19 and A at 21. Saving £1k - £3k maybe depending on bike, for a 1 year wait.
@FritzNR8
@FritzNR8 5 жыл бұрын
@spicy110 definitely was expensive, but i wanted to carry pillion at 17 so which also saved myself the hassle of redoing cbt, I agree 50cc is a dangerous bike but mine was never restricted purely to have that power to get out of a situation Although it was expensive and took a long time to get through, the experience i got from smaller bikes and slowly increasing engine sizes helped me appreciate all the bikes ive ridden and the power difference from engine to engine... I agree that having the restricted licence is a good thing so people dont jump from a 125cc to a 1000cc which they are not accustomed... however i dont understand how that would be any different from a 'born again rider'.. someone who may not have touched a bike in decades.. being able to jump in any sized engine he can afford, because they done a test when they were a teenager.. I know people who said their test used to involve leaving the test centre, riding round the block and back to the test centre on their own and the instructor was waiting for them to get back.. if they got back safe, they got a licence... madness!

Back in 1999 my mate 19 did his A2, bought an RGV 250 which was above the allowed power. The official restriction kit he got fitted to allow him to ride it was a tiny bit of bent metal 1mm thick, 8mm wide, maybe 40mm long. It had a hole drilled at one end, and a small posi drive screw. Basically a tiny bracket to restrict throttle movement that could be removed in seconds. Always made me chuckle. Obviously he removed it the second he got home.

Back in the day, when this was all fields haha, back in 1998 when I passed my bike test at 19 I passed on a 125, I then could ride any bike up to 33bhp, and then after 2 years I could automatically ride any size/power bike. It sounds quite long winded and expensive getting your full bike licence these days and I think I would have baulked at being prevented from riding a bigger bike than a 33bhp bike after 2 years unless I passed yet another bike test, I don’t see that as being fair! Car drivers should be expected to do this kind of thing as well, you pass your test in a 1 litre Car, no more than 75bhp, and your not allowed to mod it to get more power or buy a bigger car until you pass another test when your 25, because it’s often car drivers themselves that cause injury and death to bikers by driving irresponsibly.

Really informative video thank you! I’m 24 and have never owned or ridden a bike before. From the video I can see that I can go from CBT straight to A license. Does that mean I will have to purchase a 125cc to get used to the roads and have tests? Thanks!
@spicy110
@spicy110 4 жыл бұрын
Best practice is to get a 125cc for a while first to learn the control and road knowledge. If you already drive a car you will have the road knowledge so hot such a big issue. You can do the CBT as part of 3-5 day course called direct access, that start from nothing and end with you having the full licence. (If you learn to handle the bikes and pass ok, tho they normally won't put you against the test until they know you will pass.

I do remember back when i did mine, they were people taking their test on a 125's because 2 years later after passing your test you could automatically ride any size bike. Little note on CBT: While the motorcycle only side of it runs out after two years and doesn't grant you any long term license. CBT for full car license holders enables the full entitlement to ride mopeds (50cc) for the lifetime of the driver's driving license. So if you do have a full car license already, it's worth doing CBT just to get a full license (includes carrying pillions) to ride mopeds forever more, and while you might not want to stay on what is essentially just a scooter, it's nice to have the back up option if your CBT runs out and you don't care to renew it or that fussed about 125cc bikes.

@@spicy110 While true, if that's your target audience with the explanation, there are a lot of older people who get into motorcycles - even in the comments on this video already. It might be nice to drag a non-biker friend down for a 'fun day' of learning to ride on the back of a 'free' upgrade to their existing license... or if you're a young adult looking to get their first bike, drag a parent along and they'll be able to ride your 50cc scooter as well, and maybe they'll get to keep it after you upgrade so it's easier to upgrade when Dad also gets to keep his own bike he can ride forever more... but also, allows the parent to see what their kid is getting into.

Man thats complicated ... wasn't like that when I started riding ... did my CBT at 19, rode about on a Honda NS125 for a year then took the test (on my 125) 2 weeks before I turned 20. Passed that and traded the 125 in against a brand new Suzuki GS500 that should have officially been restricted to something like 40bhp (but never was) .. then after 2 years my licence was automatically upgraded to the full A licence without having to take any more tests. If I remember correctly had I been over 24 or held a full car driving licence when I took the bike test it would have been a full A licence straight away without the 2 year 40bhp restriction. That was back in about 1997 / 1998.

I kinda understand why its that way though. Also, if you're 15/16 and thinking of getting a 50cc, I wouldnt recommend it. Did my CBT for an AR50 at 16. My dads mate raced them at the time so modded it to do 55mph for me for free. Got pulled once, brand new cop, tried to do me for a bald tyre. I admit it was just under 1.6mm. Luckily enough I knew the law better than the policeman, told him he best radio for some advice before he wrote my ticket, as being a moped, it was only required to have visible tread. Came back with his tail between his legs 5 mins later apologised and let me go. This interaction left me in no doubt most police knew very little. So as soon as I got my RS125 at 17, I fitted the derestriction kit to take it from the legal 12bhp to a much more entertaining 33bhp. I couldn’t bring myself to spoil the beautiful looks with a front L plate, and after about a week decided the rear one looked shit aswell. So did a year on a 110mph bike with no L plates and never got stopped once. I did keep one yellow plastic screw jammed in one hole at the bottom of the rear plate just in case I was ever pulled over. At least I could argue it had fell off rather than not existed if I did get pulled. Never did tho. Best thing about no L plates was being able to take passengers. That extra weight over the back wheel was just enough for the front wheel to come up off throttle alone coming off the right roundabout where the roundabout camber stops and the road ahead starts. That year I had on my RS is now a year I’ll never forget….if I’d followed the “rules” and ridden “legally” it would have been so forgettable. Made me realise, in this world of restrictions, rules, and cry babies, being blindly obedient is a pathetic way to live. I choose which rules/laws/acts/statutes to follow….based on how much I agree with them, the punishment for disobedience, and the likelihood of being caught.

It has been a passion, a stress reliever, helped me meet my partner of 15 years and led us to ride around the world together on our bikes. I found a brotherhood ready to drop everything and help be it with a broken chain in the mountains of india or an electrical short in the salt plains of bolivia... there was always another local rider who wanted to help. I think we have the A1, A2 and A3 here (or at least very close to it). But without the CBT lessons. So theory, exam 1 and exam 2. And maybe the ages are different. I thaught A1 = 18+. A2 = 21 and A3 = 24. And it used to be having the A1 and 3 years of experience gives you the A2 automatically. (A2 + 3 years = A3) Not sure if that still works that way.

In the USA: take an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation class (about $200), pass the riders exam (simple), if you are 16 years of age and up - you ride any bike you can afford. If you want to ride wisely, however, you should be able to ride whatever you want.

Please small correction at 2:40 ALL CBT instructors advise that if you take your CBT on an automatic to then take a 'conversion' course approx 2 hours or an updated CBT on a manual which will then 'reset' your CBT certificate for a further 2 years from the new date
@spicy110
@spicy110 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with the idea disagree that all cbt instructors say it. In fact many will purposefully make people who would not pass on a manual do the cbt on a auto to just get them though even if they know they are getting a geared bike. This amongst many other issues is rife! I made a video talking about it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3aUdX2bicekoas in this I am talking about laws not suggestions so much.
@GavinColbourne
@GavinColbourne 5 жыл бұрын
@@spicy110 To be honest I do agree most instructors do advise to pass the CBT on an automatic just to be able to get the rider on the road as passing on an automatic is 'easier'. Personally I think a CBT should be taken on a manual that way a CBT learner can freely learn to ride on either. The actual CBT certificate (dated 08/15) is rather confusing on the rear side as there is NO clear indication on a 'Provisional A & Provisional P/AM' about automatic or manual. HOWEVER part of the 'Full P/AM (moped)' on section 7 it DOES clearly state 'Should you complete your training on an automatic motorcycle or moped we recommend that you undertake further training before riding a moped/motorcycle with manual transmission'. So from what I can tell instructors 'could' be misinforming students because technically a provisional license doesn't entitle a learner to ride 'any' bike up to the CC restriction. However if you had a Full P/AM (moped) then it advises further training.
@GavinColbourne

I will just add that on the front where it states what type of bike the course was completed on also refers to (note 7) which is under the headline of FULL P/AM and not under the provisional section
