Lovely video! Here in Denmark, canned cod roe is a very common occurrence on the lunch table, so the idea of extending it to other fish isn't foreign to me. I recently caught my first brown sea trout (with a net, none the less), and it had a good 100 grammes of the finest, orange roe. Ate it as caviar. It was good!

Enjoyed that. I usually eat roe if I get a fish with it in. Haven't tried Mullet roe. They aren't so common up here in Scotland as they are in the southwest of England, sadly.

I’m going to try your recipe it looks amazing. It’s also nice to use simply use the roe as a pasta dressing just toast it in a pan and then dress the pasta with it and some olive oil.

Thank you Joe for this rough recipe,I use to put the rough in eggs then flour and fry it with the eggs sack which made it a bit chewy.Mullets are underated fish and they are very versatile for cooking.

Sure, I've never tried that before. In the south of Spain people make the same recipe with anemones, which is got a very similar texture I guess and once it's cooked, it doesn't have any urticant particules so it's very safe. They call them ortiguillas. I'm gonna try your recipe next time I go spearfishin. Thanks mate!

Nice video Joe! I know in Italy they do “bottarga” from grey mullet roe, which is basically air-aged mullet roe which is then used in various pasta recipes. They refer to it as “gold of the sea” so I can easily believe it tasted delicious ✌️
@otellomatacena2902 жыл бұрын
Ciao. Exactly here,in Italy especially in Sardinia, mullet eggs like those in the video, fully ripe, are used to make Bottarga. you have to put them in salt for some time first. the cost of a good bottarga can exceed 100 euros per kg. Depending on the drying time you get a hard product with an initially rubbery consistency, which then becomes very hard over time. Bottarga is eaten sliced in salads, when it is softer, but above all grated on pasta with garlic and oil. For years I have been making bottarga at home with the ripe eggs of all types of fish I catch, I am a spearfisher, and in addition to mullet roe, also those of sea bass or bluefish are very good.

Hey Joe, beginner spearfisher here. Love your videos! I was hoping you could educate me on the trick you did in this video. When you want to ride the current out, and then back again later on. When is it you start swimming out related to the time of the tides? Is it some hours before low tide? And then ride the current back when it is turning for the high tide?
@JoePkSpearfishing2 жыл бұрын
It completely depends on the area you are hunting. The movement of water parallel to the coastline doesn’t really correspond consistently to high and low water times on the beach. Three ways to find out. Learn how to use a tidal stream atlas and get one for your area. Or get a boating app which tells you. Or every time you dive your area make a note of the horizontal movement of water relative to high and low water times at the nearest beach. I hope this helps a bit!

You know it’s spearfishing season when you’re spending hours rewatching Joe PK’s back catalogue while you’re waiting for his latest video to come out lol. You mention tidal flow Joe, any good site you can recommend? I spend time on Google Earth obviously and Navionics is brilliant but I’ve never got as far as working out the direction of flow before I go, because my entry/exit point is always the same. I want to do some drift dives for the first time and exit further down the coast, so knowing the direction of the tide in advance is a must. Cheers.

We eat a lot of mullet in Florida. I personally prefer the milt or white roe but the best part of a mullet is the gizzard. You have to open it up and wash out the mud, then fry it. it's hard to get people to try it but it's the best part of the fish.
@JoePkSpearfishing2 жыл бұрын
I find this hard to believe!!! But I'm gonna have to try it now...
@Alchemist25122 жыл бұрын
@@JoePkSpearfishing There are recipes on KZbin. If you try the white roe, be sure you have a spatter shield for your frying pan. They can pop dangerously!
