Күн бұрын

By the end of the year, people are going to have seen a lot of differences to the UK government, both abroad and at home. One is certainly going to be COP 29 this autumn, where Ed Miliband, in charge of net zero policy, will not just be in attendance but leading the UK delegation. This is in stark contrast with the low effort of the Tories towards the issue.

Over 1000 illegals crossed this week after the Rwanda deterrent was binned. ..Labour plans for oil will cost the UK 250,000 jobs in the industry with oil companies relocating overseas (to avoid the windfall tax😂) and Starmer has given top jobs to his party donors and mates I’d say they have made a fair few fck ups already .difference is the press are being kind and not letting the people know.

Lammy is very impressive. I saw him give a talk and then answer questions on Britain's trade at a conference put on by industry bodies in June 2023. He spoke eloquently, and when asked questions by the audience he answered them directly, but also brought out the nuances and complexity in a very easily understood way. I met him on the campaign trail this June and said how impressed I was by the way he answered questions. Isn't that what you're supposed to do? he replied. Yes but so many politicians don't. I would say that renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels and present a brilliant industrial opptunity for the global south. Therefore it is paramount to make the renewable option available. Especially as it is much more convenient as it's based on what works best in the area in question, i.e. mountainous hydroelecrltric, volcanic geothermal etc. Rather than fossil fuels which involve import and transport to the location.

A bit of a correction, Phil. You say re. climate change policy, "we're at the point in history now where we can't really afford too many more errors or periods of procrastination". We're way past that point. To stop climate change from becoming a huge disruption to societies across the world, we needed to take action 25 years ago that we're still only aiming to do in the near future. If there's no more procrastination and no future Trump administation reversing all environmental policies, and every country gets to net zero in the next twenty years, we'll perhaps avoid total disaster. It will still be awful, but it won't be total collapse. Maybe.

@Phil Moorhouse Great to hear you talking about green policies! They should be front and centre of Every government policy, without exception. And a focus for your articles? I've voted Lib Dem all my life, with one exception: when John Major turned against unions in support of the right wing of his party. However, this year, I again voted Labour, but tactically and with a heavy heart. I did it, despite De Smog UK revealing that Labour MP, Graham Stringer was a trustee of the disgusting organisation, GWPF and that a Labour shadow minister, Sarah Jones, accepted donations from fossil fuel supporters, while representing Labour on environment matters! For heaven's sake. I hope that you will be able to increase the focus of your reporting on the environment, and put the spotlight onto MP's who succumb to the temptation of fossil fuel industry funding and corrupting influence. After all, as you say, this is not about the foibles of day to day petty sparing. It's about flooding, food shortages, dieing from heat exhaustion, allon a regional scale: our very existence as a species will be affected.

Well since most of the renewable energy sources are located in Scotlans it is understandable that a Scottish leader would do that. In 2019 90,1% of Scottish electricity consumption came from renevable sources. That was 53,2% better than the UK average. That year the renewable capacity was increased to 30 TWh of generation. Onshore wind in Scotland is responsible for 51% of the UK´s turnover in onshore wind activities. Scotland has 25% of Europe´s entire offshore windpower resources, 25% of Europe´s tidal energy resources and 10% of its wave energy potential. In 2018 Scotland accounted for 24% of the UK´s renewable energy generation. If/when Scotland finally leaves UK the rest of the Uk will be thrown back far away from the goals set up now.

Lest we forget, Starmer ran the CPS from 2008-2013, when sub-postmasters were being jailed or bankrupted illegally.

The DPP runs the CPS. The CPS is handed cases from the police service & sees if they can get a conviction in a court of law. All this in under the Home Office, in other words, a Public body. Royal Mail is NOT a public body, it is a PRIVATE COMPANY.(tory privatisations remember) There is this weird quirk in British law that private companies may prosecute their workers themselves!!! They DON'T have to go to the police>CPS>court. They go directly to court. So why you imagine the head of the CPS had anything to do with these cases when even Private Eye hadn't reported on it till near the end of his term & larger media only after he ceased to be the DPP, I really cannot fathom.

Anything to say about Labour's position on the genocide in Gaza?
@Gerhardium
@Gerhardium Ай бұрын
What "genocide" is this? Collateral damage from a war the government of the Gaza Arabs decided to make hot last year? Israeli Arabs are walking around enjoying more rights than any of their cousins in the Arab world and yet Arab deaths is a war zone are "genocide?" The entire pantomime is simple-minded anti-western progressive theater. Why doesn't the left care about the ongoing genocides of the Uighur, Rohingya, and Darfuri people? Didn't see any student camp outs for them, but then again protesting those events wouldn't be anti-western, would it? Denying the indigeneity of people to the homeland of their ancestors is racism and that is exactly what anti-Zionism is: denying that the Jewish people were displaced by colonizing Roman and Arab settlers and have the same rights to their land as other indigenous people under UNDRIP is anti-Semitism. If the Gaza Arabs want peace then they can take action against Hamas for spending billions on weapons and tunnels for a war they cannot win rather than improving the lives of the people they govern: they leave that to western charities.

Not even remotely. The Tories are boasting about a new solar project in one of their councils today. They're even happy that they will have to borrow heavily for it, because it will pay for itself.

@@ADifferentBias That solar project might indeed pay for itself, but it’s the developer that will get paid, not electricity consumers! A short article titled “Debunking the Cheap Renewables Myth” on the davidturver substack account explains (correctly, I hope, because I don’t understand all the details myself) how expensive wind and solar really are. Something I do understand for myself is that the massive intermittency and high resource demand of grid-connected wind or photovoltaic solar mean it certainly isn’t feasible for them to get us anywhere near net zero, and that continuously trying to overcome those issues with unworkable technical fixes would financially ruin us if we were to actually try.

@@ADifferentBiasLook at any long run charts of the LCOE costs of each power source and you see wind and solar steadily declining while nuclear and gas inexorably increase. Meanwhile coal power ends in the UK so no longer relevant.

Anyone who uses phrases like "climate emergency" or "climate breakdown" are revealing they know nothing about science but a lot about politics. Such terms are useful for a debate with non experts who are scientifically illiterate (e.g Labour party leaders), otherwise not useful.
