Just after the fall of Adviika I watched a report by a Ukrainian youtube channel - Фабрика новинок - which was quite hard hitting in the clips it showed. I google translated the ten most liked comments and the common factor was criticism of the command and that explicitly included both Syrsky and Zelensky and especially dismay about leaving wounded behind. We generally hear very little from the Ukrainian public. What do you think the current state is? Are you still in contact with people back there?

My father is a neocon in denial. It's strange to hear his rationale. He told me that Ukraine successfully snuck away in the night, and the Russians scrambled to take Avdiivka when they realized it and encountered almost no resistance. He said Ukraine did this strategic withdrawal, because the Russians were causing the Ukrainians to waste their artillery on small groups of advancing Russian troops instead of using their artillery for better targets like tanks. He also mentioned that the mortality rate of the Ukrainian soldiers was too high for them to hold Avdiivka, since they were only able to use their artillery on Russian troops instead of Russian tanks. I wonder why the mortality rate among Ukrainians was so high if all Russia was sending forward was troops, and I suppose that's why they felt the need to use artillery on Russian troops. What happened to the elite warriors who were sent to defend Avdiivka I wonder. I will not bring up these points to my father. I will not argue with him. He's my father, and I love him. It will do no good to start this argument with him, because he was raised during the Cold War and will never change his mind from something his son has said, even though I was a member of the US Intelligence Community. He was an Army Lieutenant, and as you may know, a prior enlisted man like me can never know more than a Commissioned Officer, no matter what. I just thought yall would find the thoughts of a 65 year old neocon interesting. There are people who drink the propaganda kool-aid from both sides. It's interesting to see how far they'll go with the mental gymnastics to hang on to their beliefs, bless their hearts. All we can hope for is that rational and open-minded people are in the silent majority of voters.

Yes, you will have to dig very deep for stories like this (obviously the Ukrainian army does not like to advertise facts like this that its elite 25th Brigade was disbanded in disgrace). Obviously, being 9 years ago, I cannot remember exactly where I read this. But I do remember it. Regarding the strategic importance of Avdiivka... The AFU from Avdiivka controlled the largest railway marshalling yard in the USSR, which is located in Yasinovataya, there are more than 50 tracks. From the previous positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to the marshalling yard about 3-4 km away, even a mortar could shoot there. Now the enemy has been pushed back 10km and now Russia can use a huge sorting hub for the logistics of its army. This gives Russia a huge advantage.

Not true. Donetsk is still with in artillery range, today so called "brave" Ukrainian soldiers conducted artillery shelling at Donetsk with HIMARS and Archer artillery systems they also conducted FPV drone assault, few civilians was killed in action and some are wounded. Ukraine has longer range artillery which is superior if compared to Russian. For example swedish Archer Artillery system can fire 155 mm artillery shells up to 50+ km.
