@Yousif Messi Who knows where he is from but presuming that you are assuming that he is American: America is at peace because it has an extremely old and stable government that, even when it flexes, doesn't break (so far). It also helps that America only has two neighbors. As for the resources thing, the USA actually has the second most natural resources in the world after Russia (or much lower, it depends on how you measure it, but they have a lot regardless).It's wars abroad cost far more than they earn. In short, America is slightly poorer because of its wars abroad. Where you are correct is that the US military and political goal for over a hundred years, is to keep markets open. The USA is obligated to defend countries in the event of war. Their total population is almost 2 billion people. America has troops across the globe spending billions per year for the defense of other. However free trade helps everyone and makes everyone rich. Extreme poverty is ten percent of what it has been in the past in large part because of free trade.

She's laughing, but that solely because the only other option she has is to break-down physically and mentally to the constant fear of being killed at random. It takes a strong mind to live like that and not completely fade to nothing; I hope she hasn't faded to nothing.

I feel sorry for my Ukrainian brothers and sisters. The Ukrainians don't deserve to live in fear for their basic rights. I'm Polish and I'm appalled that they are forced to fight for their safety. I talked to one Ukrainian lady yesterday. She was crying and I started crying too. Please leave Ukraine alone!

@@ursus-maniac-workshop yup true ukrainian upa fought poles in wolyn but you do know that poles aswell came there and astablished their regime and burned down 14 ukrainians villages and ukrainians lived under oprresion there for years? Or did you forget that ukrainians couldnt be at the goverment there had no say in anything and basically were slaves to the poles ? For ukrainians in ww2 times anyone on their land was the enemy and i think you need ballz of steel to fight off poles , soviet red army and germany at the same time in such small periods of time they did it for their land same as poles fought off germans and soviets red army in poland but lost in the end and became soviet for a short period but then aswell got rid of the soviets and renewed their goverment on the land of poland , dont say 1 sided thing if you dont know to why and what happened before

I find it hard not to cry watching this. A reminder that for many of us don't have real problems. I have some coworkers in Kyiv and I think about them often. I pray these people can see peace in their lifetimes.

I am an Eastern European too. These scenes, they always remind how close to home this war is, and the people caught in it so similar. Curses upon those who decided that their geopolitics are worth the blood of civilians.

The unseen damage of the constant threat of war, is the psychological impacts on the children growing up in that environment. The negative influences on society will be evident when these kids reach adulthood. From what I have read over the years, increases in drug use addictions, violence, and shortened lifespans are the usual results. If I was a parent, and had the monetary means to do so, I would move. Only the war profiteers, and dictators, benefit from endless wars.

As a Ukrainian living near Kyiv, I would say that's a really scary escalation. We, Ukrainians< just need to stop this panic for now that the media are giving us. It's dealing much more damage than actual physical weaponry. Hope to my life as I do usually. Without panic. Staying calm. Staying patient about this whole situation. Thanks, World, for the support.

I've seen this same comment or type of comment so many times. Russia is trying to see what the West will do if he sits on the border semi-quasi aggressively and of course the West needs a new war for its arms industry. Now they can justify spending billions on domestic arms purposes to send to Ukraine and Putin can get some North Korea style concessions out of the West by doing what he knows the West would absolutely love for him to do (which is, be the aggressor in a big war that can be used as a proxy conflict involving Western arms and help vs Russia's limited ability to wage large scale war over time)

Mark my words.. usa and NATO would never send it's troops to help Ukraine. It's not in their interest. But war like situation certainly has american advantage. As they could sell defence products to Ukraine. Usa did the same thing with Taiwan .

As Russian i can say that all this totally disaster. I’am very apologise to all Ukrainian people. This my words can be used for not only Ukranian people, my words can be used for all eastern Europeans, Moldovian and Georgian people. I’am young man, from Moscow. Ordinary man and i can assure you that simular thoughts in head most young people which i communicate. This is a shame. And we can’t do anything for this situation. We need a democracy in our country and begin of honest conversation about our difficult past. And to my deeply sorrow honest conversation about our present. Thanks Putin for that.

No wonder Russia builds military tents and builds up troop numbers when the situation heats up with Western media provocation. Do not believe the media, all information is broadcast in the interests of the state. Zelensky said on January 28 that the US was exaggerating the threats than they really were. Russia is building up weapons only for defense, amid fears. It turns out the Mexican duel. But the US has its own interests against Russia, and this explains everything. Allegedly, war is a way of imposing sanctions and influencing Russia, as was the case with China. This is an information war in which the US is the aggressor.

Ukraine is neighbor of my country. I am ashamed as some of our politicians react and don't want to help Ukraine. I really wish Ukraine peace and not an open war, for both selfish and unselfish reasons. Putin has to do something, he has thousands troops on borders. Only hope is it wouldn't be an attack.

Hybrid war that is happening right now on the east of Ukraine was started by Russia/Russians (not ethic ones who lived in Ukraine their whole life, but people like Girkin-Strelkov, Russian FSB officer who came to Ukraine with an exact purpose to create this war and who was the head of operation on its starting/early stages). And it is fully controlled by Russia (all the weapons and finances for war are from Russia directly). People from Russia go to those occupied territories to join the militants army for Russian money.

@Tony Soprano Here is my response to your reply- 1) Yes, I’m talking about the UN Charter. Specifically Article 2 sections 3 and 4. Do you not understand what those sections say? Allow me to quote: “3. All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered. 4. All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.” This means after World War II a country can’t just illegally invade another country in order to change its borders or invaded sovereignty, etc. 2) As for your second point on America and stealing Syrian oil, this is a classic fallacious argument where you are changing the subject. I am not doubting nor am I making any claims that America hasn’t done things that we should criticize. For example, the USA illegally invaded Iraq under false pretense under the George W. Bush years. I could go on with other examples however none of this relates to Russia illegally invading and annexing Crimea or Russia illegally invading eastern Ukraine. Again, by you changing subject with America stealing Syrian oil you’re attempting to change the subject. This is a classic fallacious argument. 3) As for the referendum in Crimea, it doesn’t matter if people who lived in Crimea who identify as Russian wanted Russia to invade and annex a territory from Ukraine. This is a moot point. I’m sure every country has people who live in it who identify with another country and don’t like the current regime. This is another fallacious argument. 4) Who cares that Russia had a naval base in Crimea. This does not give Russia any right to illegally invade and annex a sovereign country’s territory. For example, America has a military base in Guantánamo Bay Cuba. Does that give America the right to illegally invade and take over entire Cuba island? Of course not. And I’m American. If you were Russian you should feel the same way about Crimea and should believe Ukraine has the right to keep its sovereign territory. 5) As for the last point, who cares 17% of Ukrainians have Russian passports. Why would you think that’s appropriate reason for Russia to illegally invade eastern Ukraine and do so with soldiers that had no identification which is against the Geneva Convention. Peter Griffin said it best… If 1 million Canadians held dual passports of Canada and America, does that mean America should invade part of Canada? Does it mean the USA should invade all of Canada? Of course not. Don’t be naïve and stupid. I guess I just don’t understand why you feel the need to back up Russia after they illegally invaded and annexed Crimea and illegally invaded eastern Ukraine. Why would you want them to invade the rest of Ukraine? Russia is already the largest country by land mass in the world. It does not need more territory. NATO is a defensive military organization that only exists because Russian military aggression and expansion. If you were the leader of Ukraine, wouldn’t you want to potentially join NATO because of your fear that the rest of your country would be invaded by a hostile country?

If Russia's goal was to invade Ukraine they would have done so openly back in 2014. Back then the Ukrainian army wasn't even there. They would have use aviation massive tank assaults and fast war tactics and wouldn't take long to take Kyiv. And even before that they could send a helping hand to Yanukovich while he was still president. I don't see the point of doing something a decade later when most Ukrainians don't even like Russia when back in 2013 most Ukrainians thought Russia was a brotherly nation. Nowadays Ukrainian patriotism is way stronger than back then and an invasion wouldn't even go that well

Since I’m Russian, I can spell out to everyone why a fully-fledged incursion won’t take place. The first reason is obvious: economic stability-Russia has learned the hard way what sanctions mean for the economy; they’ve proven to be quite debilitating for economic growth, which spurred discontent among the most vulnerable. The second reason is that gaining new territories proved to have only a transient positive effect on ratings; while, in general, the silo-minded population loves these stories about “new property acquisition”, they tend to quickly realise that this new property requires maintenance, and they’re paying for it from their pockets. And the third and final reason is a Chechen war memory; The incursion would take a heavy toll on military personnel, and it would ignite already existing tinder-dry discontent among the population. So, in my opinion, these claims of impending war are not only dubious at best but also absolutely groundless.

Invading Crimea, fueling a civil war, 100,000+ troops on the border with field hospitals and logical support in place. I am from Ukraine, but i live in Italy, if war begins i wold be very worried about my relatives over there, even if they live 250km away from Kiev so very far from war epicenter, but if russia starts a severe advance they will get there without any problems so i hope at least that NATO will be stronger defending Ukraine and will come to help us directly in the conflict

It's obviously not. The Biden family may have valuable business assets in Ukraine, but to regular Americans it's an irrelevant country. Same for Europeans. It's only because of hostile NATO expansionism that Russia is provoked.

@@XpurlX If Churchill allied with Germany then communism would have been defeated 80 years ago. Moreover, the Russia federation is a singular Christian nation and not comparable to the secular USSR. It's also not totalitarian but authoritarian, which is fundamentally different.

@@ssjmm5436 hey, this is no competition. I have my sympathy to Ukraine cause anytime Russian forces may invade them. Ukraine joining NATO is not an excuse to invade them. It their country, no one can force them what to do. Its their decision. Our supports are still with Ukraine.

Every New York Times article sounds like an editorial! At a time like this we need impartial, truthful, transparent reporting. I do not trust that one can get it from the times anymore! You have lost your trust and your honor. With the Afghanistan fiasco being ignored, it is not wise to threaten another military misadventure.
